Jeff is the coolest guy! He came with the Canadian Brass to the American Band College last summer and he gave a talk about fearless performance. The whole quintet sat in with the director's band for Festive Overture and he stay two chairs away from me. They are so down to earth!
Evidently Eleanor was never shot at (or had to play 8 Konzertstucks on a Conn 8D with a C1 cup). Jeff, you and Sarah are so smart and funny and both so full of great tips for today's horn students. Speaking for us old-timers, though---like the Wright Bros., most of us had already lifted off before we even knew we were flying, then loved it way too much to be afraid. Besides, back then, we called it "excitement" not "fear." And, when we were playing great music with great musicians, the truth is, we'd have done it for nothing. It was a privilege, not a job. Naturally, it helps to know in advance whether you're going to come out swinging like Marciano or Ali---i.e.: always going for the K.O., or else taking what comes as gracefully as possible. Either way, you're in it for glory and haven't time to think about much else. A horn player's worst enemy?---serious illness, or death. Otherwise, you just want to play every day, and then some! And don't worry about memorizing. If you're ready for the concert, it's already in there forever. Who's everybody's horn-playing hero? Doesn't Dennis Brain always come to mind?! But, of today's living heroes (?)...neither modesty nor discretion permits naming the other 3. Favorite quote: "A substitute shines brightly as a King until a King be by..."
