Good chat fellas!!!! Valid points on all sides. Lets not forget we are only playing records and it's supposed to be fun. Been doing this since 85 and still love seeing routines no matter where people are from. I'm from UK; Used to go by DJ EXCEL, invented the twiddle scratch back in the day, and love seeing how thats been taken and modified over the years. Things just move forward and as long as it's still being reinvented and exciting to young uns then its alllllllllllllll good.
Hey man! I'm still trying to find the footage of the '97 UK DMC Final, when you were robbed of your rightful place in the World Final! I still remember that crazy routine you did where you were cutting in the Moog tone with one hand, on one deck, and tapping the record on the other deck with your elbow. I do have footage of that routine, which I filmed myself on a camcorder, at Earl's Court, also in '97, when you were at the Vestax booth. Man, most people are totally unaware that you were Q-bert's inspiration when he created the Crab scratch, right?
ive always liked guys like asian hawk who go for musicality but get voted down in battles. he doesnt care he just keeps doing his thing. i respect that more than show boating patterns over dubstep.
its all a learning curve,we all learn, even world champs like craze are still learning and getting better peace isaac and jake, that is some humble ish for 2 champs to say
Good discussion guys. It seems that social media has got thinned out the forum discussions that we used to have about battles and the scene. The funk and excitement levels has definitely in my opinion got weaker and may never be the same. Maybe that because we've all got older and more serious things get in the way and many people who were heavily involved in the scene have left or just remained quiet..who knows. An injection boost of some sort is needed.
I wish I saw this live, from me being a fan of this culture the movement is going different directions battles are important but the arts needs to be where turntablists can do shows live an make records like other artist an many have done that an are still doing that, Turntalbist that have mad skill should be making a living doing this art period. I can talk a lot about this I truly love the turntablism culture, We need more discussion on the turntablism culture to see what direction the turntablst want to take this. This art will not die,
Hey, does anyone remember Craze's performance at Scratchcon 2000, when he battled himself? He dissed himself, using the "Real Gangstas don't talk shit in magazines" sample, right? But does anyone know why he used it? Well, for those who were left scratching their heads about the whole thing, he did it because he'd dissed Rob Swift, in an issue of the British Hip hop magazine Big Daddy, around 18 months earlier, when he criticised Rob for "still doing routines from '92". Anyone remember that?
If it wasn't for Vekked making a comment about his hat, I would have never suspected that was Vekked LOL! I'll finish off my thoughts afterwards. Just had to point that out before I forgot LOL
I really enjoyed this discussion. I can see where both sides are coming from and i hold absolutely zero hate for fly and netiks routine, in fact i enjoyed it for what it was, an entertaining well rehearsed routine (don't believe the "practicing" hype). In Robs defense, what makes this routine any different from the time cutmaster swift beat alladin with that dancing bullshit? Thats probably where robs issues stem from in my opinion. It was bullshit then and its bullshit now. Now, is this routine a good representation of fly and netiks true skill? No. Its just a video thats easy for people to relate too because its music they know (unlike a lot of the highly over produced dmc routines we see now). Those routines are the real reason battles are losing attendance because joe public have no idea what these songs sound like originally so they can't comprehend what the dj is doing to reinterpret that piece of music. If djs want to get the scene back to its peak of the late 90s they need to actually do it like it was being done back then. If it keeps on going the way its going, it is going to die a slow painful death.
I agree there was a bunch of yes men in the thread, and that Robs comments came off really one sided and kinda petty. I understand exactly what Rob was saying tho and it's not that I don't agree with his feelings about it, but I feel like Fly and Netik have nothing to prove. Their video was very accessible to casual hip hop fans it wasn't like they were trying to "keep it hip hop", they were trying to make an entertaining video. I've been watching DMC and deejaying since 97 and I wouldn't be deejaying if it weren't for Xmen that's why I hate to see is shit go down. Rob shoulda made a #realdjing video response or at least given props where they were due instead of his "rant". I'm not a fan of routines that are completely produced to the point where it's like they open serato and load up the "left side" and "right side" mp3's it leaves them no wiggle room, if they fuck up its a wrap lol. If the routine is dope it's dope, point blank. Flys shit looks kinda suspect sometime it's so edited.
+Zack Davis One thing I didn't touch on in the video was the whole 'New York' mentality when it comes to discussing hip-hop and how theres a lack of explanation as to why some of them 'speak' in a battle type of way, which can later be interpreted as arrogant and ignorant. In actuality, the anger and frustration is rooted in love. I grew up in D.C., us Washingtonians aren't like that, but we're familiar with the mentality. There are X-Men though like Blind & Precision who serve as a bridge between the two eras, yet, I don't see Rob acknowledging their body of work in a public forum in a while or at least to the extent of why what they're doing is dope.
i feel like we dont have enough idol's in turntablism for the young generation where are the turntablists messing with new music. there are tons of good trap songs and remixes done by soulection. the only person i can look at and get inspired by is CRAZE because he fucks with new music but still dose some dope ass scratching and routines. rob dose not identify with the average young generation not to say im just an average young person i grew up listening to 90's 2000's and new music they all have something for me and i see pros and cons in all but people dont want to hear the same old song every night ect or see old videos all the time. we need more tablists to mess with new tracks that people love. i want you guys to check out soulection look at there music and tell me they don't have some good trap.
+BOY RICH I think there are a lot of turntablists messing with new music but not many are doing it well... Jon1st, I-Dee, Switch, Precision are the only ones I can think of who use new music a fair bit in their new routines. But, I think it's important to try to be the DJ that you want to see too! If there's a gap in the scene that you would like to see filled, work towards being the one to fill it :)
Great stuff! I don't think overdubbing audio in turntablism is good for the art and its image. Also, producing an audio file that is lined up is easy compared to juggling. I am not a good juggler, but if I took the time I could create a file that would make me look at good as Vekked, okay.. not that good, but decent and maybe entertaining. I think the time spent to produce the lined up audio tracks they (Fly/Netik) could have easily perfected a dope juggle, I mean, hey, they ARE champs and everyone is saying they can do it, so why didn't they? I don't like that mentality, personally, same as why I don't like that Craze uses sync. I guess that stuff can be earned, but if I was an ambassador of an art, I would do my best to maintain its integrity and lead by example.
also you 2 have brung up far too many points that need tending to, im wearing my concuring mask for this, head nods have always a smell of approval to it
oh oh... instead pushing itf, dmc in the right direction ...they kill each other ... if you needd that beef-do it on the decks... Why is there no champions league for turntabeists (for dmc champions)..like nba nhl...? An Allstarbattle with craze, qbert, kentaro, swift, netik, fly, noize... no, they win this and than ...???.puuuuh thats boring... for rookie dj 's there is no serious Worldwide dj Contests anymore and if i see this useless conversation...omg... vinyl- rip - i see much good new dj's but no good plan support from the legends/industrie...
i loved this discussion. i agree with vekked's explanation of "musicality in turntablism" very much. it's awesome how structures his music. One thing i'd like to bring up that i haven't seen discussed is the idea that rob swift is kind of riding the coat tails of something popular. when he released his video he said something along the lines of in the subject of the video that fly/netik made last week that went viral... i kind of feel like he saw that something was getting attention and he tried to redirect that attention towards himself to gain more personal attention. would you guys agree/disagree?? He also reffered to himself as a hip hop god.. which made me lose so much respect for him.

This was so dope. Thank you for your contribution and this open conversation. Even more hyped to try and continue this art form.
Dope video. Nice to see people chopping it up about turntablism in 2016.

good shit boys. dw i'll have some things out for the community in a bit ;)

you guys got checked for real
+Kreap Mcgee whats this mean?
WTF? Why explain . . . just battle already. People on youtube are visual types.
+Stan Kinaz The purpose of this video wasn't to have a battle...
The title was miss leading. Whatever the case may be one thing is certain, Rob would look better with his shirt off than Fly&Netik.
LOL at the 48 min comment!

+Rix Anthony RE: Rob's intentions, no comment :-\ 🙈. I think the public is smart enough to see through the subtile stuff though.
