His friend and band mate at the time Gary B. White actually wrote it . Linda made it famous. Beautiful song! Her version makes my throat tighten up and my eyes water a little when I listen to her sing it.

How sweet to hear him sing his friend Gary White’s song. Linda Ronstandt’s version makes me cry because she sings it so beautifully.

I saw Jerry Jeff (and met him!) on this tour. I remember him doing this song that night. He was always totally amazing in concert- a one of a kind brilliant musician.
      RIP JJW.

Thanks for posting this. It's wonderful to hear the background story of this great composition. Jerry Jeff Walker shifted a couple of lines, still makes sense though. All cover versions of this song has slight variations in the lyrics. After listening to Larry Santos & Rod McKuen cover versions also, I'm convinced that it's Linda Ronstadt's version that really launched the song. Funny how even a good song needs just the right mix of great voice and arrangement to truly shine.

Jerry Jeff makes any song sound good. I enjoyed the story behind the song. I agree with others, this song is Linda’s.

Agree Walter. But the authenticity of it makes it worth the listen. Voice track is solid though. Never knew he wrote this. I've been a Ronstadt fan for 50 years now, and will listen to this song with a new appreciation now. Blessings JJW...Ed

Eric Hertel you're correct. Gary White, who was JJW's bandmate in Circus Maximus, wrote it. He picks up the tempo a bit.

Love Linda's version, but this is cool, low key with that Jerry Jeff mumble, classic.

My brother is 4 years older than me and we lived in a small country town in Missouri, my brother saved for years and when he was 16 he brought a new Camero 327 engine, cost was under $3,000 , sometimes late at night we would go to a county paved road and try to get the coasting record, we won evt time

I usually like Jerry Jeff, but this is not the greatest version of this song, kinda laconic, if you you what I mean.

Seems a little rushed. Not bad, but not Ronstadtian quality.
Not sure men can sound poignant enough.
