Jeff Keith of Tesla talks about his Rock Scene

- Jeff Keith of Tesla was first exposed to music by his father, who played guitar for a local bar band in Georgetown, CA. After graduating high school, Jeff bought a guitar chord book and learned his favorite Beatles & Rolling Stones songs to play at campfires. He later auditioned & got the gig for the band City Kidd, and they played Top 40 hits with a few of their own songs mixed in. City Kidd was eventually renamed Tesla. Tesla went on tour with Mötley Crüe in 1990, and Nikki Sixx “in a loving, joking way” described Tesla as “a bunch of tomato farmers from Sacramento.” “We were proud to be tomato famers from Sacramento.” Jeff says. Some of his biggest influences are Steven Tyler, Bon Scott, and his favorite band, Foghat. “Foghat, early ZZ Top; all that good stuff. I’m stuck in the 60’s and 70’s.” Go to RockSceneMagazine.com for more cool interviews.
This entire band epitomized “no bullsh*t”, humble, blue Jean, rock-n-roll. So many great memories listening to these guys.
I love Jeff Keith. He's so humble and real. He seems like a beautiful person.
And actually singing songs about real history.
jeffs awesome! i met him about 20 yrs ago. he was staying at a hotel i worked at as a kid....tesla was playing a venue close by that night...he could tell i was a fan when i waited on him in the hotels restaurant...and asked if id like to come to the show....if course i said yes....he set me up with tickets and backstage passes for me and 3 friends....he was the nicest dude....remembered exactly who i was bsckstage too and took alot of time to talk with my friends and i....it was a fun time!
You are lucky
You are lucky
You are lucky
You are LUCKY
Gosh dang it I would kill for something like that. (But I wasn’t alive.....)
Straight up Kevin, keep rocking bro 👍☺️
Nice story ❤️
On Tesla’s first big tour opening for Def Leppard in Philly on the Hysteria tour, my friends and I somehow managed by to get in their bus (we didn’t have any hot girls with us either so I have no clue how we managed to do this - and I was pretty drunk so I can’t recall) and hung out drinking with all the guys for lover an hour. At some point Jeff Labar of Cinderella drove up in a brand new Porsche 911 and came on board as well. Jeff was indeed super cool and even signed a Check (remember those things?) from my checkbook and autograph keepsake. Good times sooo long ago now...
I helped my friend Greg King set up his drum set at The Oasis Ballroom years ago! I leaned on the stage & drank a Long Island ice tea while talking to a guy named Jeff! Just 2 guy's talking young dreams years ago! He's friend to a couple of my friends! I never mention thoughs days! I just smile! I also worked the little Concert in Cesar Chavez park in Sacramento! Jeff does charity work & is a thoughtful, kind person!
Jeff is a great example of what musicians today really need....talent, love for your fans, a big heart, and some humility.
And one of the best vocalists!
Most underrated band ever
No. Nazareth is
Im 44 years old and they could have meen more
Steven Blackwell I agree man. So much potential.
I agree
@@flintrock8433 No
Those "tomato farmers from Sacramento" wrote the soundtrack to my life. I'm grateful for the music.
This band needs to be in rock and roll hall of fame.
Mechanical resonance their first album was one of the best ever great from front to back
Totally agree.
They will be..
yeah along with Boston and a bunch of other legendary bands but no they put in BS instead. Rock and Roll Hall of SHAME!
@@aldenunion Don't hold your breath, Lady Gaga will be there first. The people deciding who will got into the RRHOF have their heads up their asses entirely.
Never forget seeing them 1987 when they opened up for Def Leppard!! Gawd those were the days!!!
Yup still got those Tix stubs.
Yessss!!!!!!
Fast forward 28 years (TWENTY EIGHT!) and they did the exact same thing here in Cali on their tour. Still sounded great!
Met this guy a couple of times....kool motherfuker. Very down to earth..no rockstar attitude at all..he deserves every bit of success that has come his way...not to mention one of the last of the best frontmen in RocknRoll... keep it up Jeff!!!
Great to hear seems like a band that loves the fans. This band totally is underrated and the contribution they added to Rock and the music . 5 man acoustic jam- love song - he is old and still kicks A$$. HOF
That Band Rocked ur ass off .Talented Bad ass Musicians !!! Great Live Band!!!
Great interview Keith. Love Tesla!!!!!
With as underrated as they are and how much more recognition they deserve, it's a wonder how he remains so warm and humble. What a truly cool dude.
What a humble and genuine guy. A vocalist with a gift of storytelling... That's a star.
Man, I’ve seen so many shows, and Tesla easily ranks among the BEST!! Thanks for the music guys! 👍🏻
It's nice to see a rocker give credit to so many other bands.
Most just talk trash about the others
I have seen Tesla 27 times great everytime
Tesla is awesome I have seen them over 20 times
Damn🤘🏻 I never got to see them live.
Wow really? Trip
27 Likes. Can't ruin a good thing !
Seeing them for the first time next month 🤘
He's what a singer is all about... HEART \m/\m/
What a cool guy. I love the band. I still listen to them all the time.
Appreciate Jeff's humbleness
Early ZZ TOP and Foghat never gets old.
This frikn rock legend! First saw them in 88 opening for Poison! 6 shows and 30 years later I’m still rockin Tesla’s Greatest Hits and 5 Man Jam ALL the way home! Got my 11 year old singing Love Song like a champ! We love ya Jeff! Keep on rockin in the free world!
Jeff was part of my first Rock show. Badlands, Tesla, Great White. That night is still vivid in my mind. All 3 bands kicked ass.
saw that tour, too....tesla stole the show and should have been the headliners.
I saw that tour myself. All 3 bands were awesome, but Tesla by far was the highlight for me. At one point Frank started playing Battery by Metallica, and that totally blew my mind. Great times!
I saw that show in Detroit and it was one of the best ever. Three of my favorite bands. Badlands opened and was just awesome. Great White was second and was excellent. Tesla was the headliner for Detroit (Tesla and Great White alternated headlining each night on that tour and Detroit was a Tesla stronghold/market). Tesla just crushed it!
I've seen them 20+ times and great each time.
Saw that tour as well I'm guessing early 90s......im getting old and memory fades with age. I bet I saw great white 20+ times seemed like they opened for everyone lol.
LOL I saw that tour too, fall of 1990 in Iowa. Great White was the headliner that night. Badlands sucked, nobody had ever heard of them. Tesla was great but I think they were sky high. Jeff was the stereotype 80s frontman, constantly air humping and telling us to scream so loud that Milwaukee, Wisconsin could hear it. The crowd wasn't quite into Tesla as much as Great White, as GW had more airplay locally.
So great to hear others say they are stuck in the 70s! The BEST of times.
Jeff Keith from "Tesla" is the Real Deal used By God in a Magical Way!!
Lov His Songs!!! Fan 4 Life!!! 6-11-23♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
My all time favorite band, my buddy Randy knows Frank, and got him to say happy birthday to me on video and sent it to me on my birthday, BEST BIRTHDAY EVER. I showed that video to everyone.
TESLA RULES
🤘😎🤘
Jeff is the man, what a great band real musicians
I love him!!! I love Tesla since i was little. I grew up with their songs and still play them over and over.
My kids love them too ❤❤❤
Your voice will echo into eternity!
One of my all-time favorite bands! These guys are so underrated! True rock fans know they kick ass!
Im 41 PARADISE has been my all time favorite since I was 13 years old
Amy Burns Amen
I was there also, best concert I ever seen and I've seen some good ones.
Tesla has been and always will be when I'm on my most favorite bands of all time... Jeff Keith had a lot to do with me singing and Frank Cannon inspired me so much to play guitar so thank you guys I'm almost 40 years into playing music LOL
My favorite band ever. I got to see them at Red Rocks in 1992 and they were awesome live. I’ve always liked them because they are a jeans and a T-shirt band. It’s always been about their music not their image.
I SAW TESLA IN DESMOINES, IOWA IN 1985 OR 1986 & THE CONCERT WAS GREAT.THEY ARE GREAT STILL
10 Times I have seen Tesla, 10 Times not enough . . . . .Absolutely a great rock band !!
For a self-proclaimed bunch of tomato farmers from Sacramento, it's safe to say they did quite well for themselves!
RJC 72 In defense of Nikki, who I know in the past had a tendency to be a dick, I heard him say “Tesla is a great band!” In an interview with Phil Collen on Nikki’s show. Nikki was probably high AF when he made the tomato farmers comment and he even talked shit about GNR back in those days so...
He is awesome love him as frontman and writer
What I like about Tesla is when you see them live it's like listening to the record there that good
It takes a lot of talent to do that too
Only band still that sounds that way all other sound way out of tune
LOL It's SUPPOSED to be that way! Nothing worse than a "studio" band...
Great stories... You will live forever Jeff!
I saw them about 5 years ago at a fairly small venue called the Casino in Hampton Beach, NH.
Ive seen alot of rock shows and they were one of the best of them.
" what you give" is my all time favorite, followed by modern day cowboy, Put it on and crank it up!!
This is one happy dude, it’s nice 🤟🏼 one of my favorite all time bands✌️
Im stuck in the 70s and proud of it!! Staying there too!
Quit talking in past tense - it's not "he was" , It's "He is still awsome and rocking because I just rocked out three days ago with TESLA in Wichita Ks. Wooo Hooo :))
TK Slong Cranjis talks in the third person!
Best Damn Tomato farmers I ever saw, In concert at Irvine Meadows!!! This was on the"
The Great Radio Controversy tour. KIX, TESLA and GREAT WHITE. That was such a rockin show all night long. Great memory's of that night. One of the best damn rock shows I ever saw, and I saw a lot of concerts all over the So.Cal area.
Cool story. I saw ‘em on Psychotic Supper.
Just like the other comments below, I met these guys on Bust A Nut tour. It was at a Best Buy a few hours before the show.
I really wanted to BS with Frank about guitars, but he was a little busy although he was nice and said hi. Jeff jumped right in with me and we talked about how much we loved Zeppelin and other bands and just had a fun talk. He had NO ego and was just a lot of fun. Tesla were the nicest band I have ever met
One of the few bands that keeps it raw, like the Black Crowes.
After YEARS of going to concerts and seeing every band from the 70's, 80's and 90's... I saw Tesla at the Arizona Memorial Coliseum. At one point during the show, Jeff Keith used his vocal cords to raise the hair on everyone's back! I think it took everyone to an almost spiritual place of a unified vibration! It even gives me chills thinking about it now 20 years later. When he did what he did, you could see him smile and roll his eyes back because he knew he was in the zone.. A truly amazing thing to witness that I had never seen from ANY other singer.
love tesla, great band, and awesome records. love seeing jeff again.
we need a HEAVY METAL REVIVAL. desperately, love the 80's and all of its debauchery
and decadence. we need another 20-year party and have a good time without \the drugs and alcohol, we did that. sex everywhere.
I fucking love it. Great voice. True Rock Star.
Real old school ROCKER'S AND ROCK N ROLL MUSIC. FOREVER,FOREVER!!! GOD BLESS HIM AND THE WHOLE WORLD.
He's speaking voice sounds just like his singing voice
He is no act he is real
Saw them many times live..best live band ive ever seen
I Lov this Guy So Much!!! ❤
2 things I love about this channel- 1) The only person talking is the subject. 2)Most of these take place on a tour bus.
Jk and the boyz are amazing musicians, I've met them and seen every show when they come to my town. This band hekped me get threw alot, there music is awesome, long live tesla.... I even named my cat tesla, I've got alot of love for the boyz, so keep on rocking much love

These guys are the coolest rock stars ever!! Met them in 86
Saw Tesla at Hershey pa June 30 2018, loved it! Jeff rocks the house! 🎸😍🖤🤟🏻
Wow! I'm from central Pa. Wish I would've known they were coming to town! Bet it was a great show!👍😎🎸🎶
Jen Jett’s channel I’ll be seeing them next week in NY I’m so excited 😆
Neelia Janiskennedy have a blast neelia! You’re gonna love em. They put on an excellent show! Jeff rocks! Wait til ya hear love song live! So beautiful that solo is 👍🏻🤟🏻
Wow, there is someone else like me out there. Foghat was great!!! Much love to you dude.
The Day on the Green he spoke of was one of the few I did not go to. I wanted to go, and had tickets waiting at home in the East Bay, but we were stuck up at Donner Lake when my buddy's 68 Camaro died right as we were pulling away from the cabin the evening before the concert. We were ticked! That would have been a great show.
The tickets were freebies anyway, so no money wasted.
Glad to hear Jeff likes Foghat. I still listen to them from time to time. We used to play Fool For The City and Terraplane Blues at parties and the the few times we played clubs. The slide player we had was really good and could nail the parts, but he moved back east, and our bass player went off to college.
I hope I can see Tesla play somewhere in NORCAL sometime in the not too distant future. Its been years since I've seen them!
I hope I get to see them again in the near future also.
Still love you guys since the beginning ✌️❤️🎼🎤🤟🤘
Jeff you are the Bon Scott of our generation!! Cannot wait to see ya in Cherokee next month. Show number 18 for me! Happy Birthday to you, Frank and Troy.
I love him. He has a way of naturally turning a negative into a positive and going with his flow .
One off the greatest Rock Bands ever
Cool I love it tomato farmer's from Sacramento lol. I was born and raised in Sacramento went to school with two of the members in Earthshaker, City Kidd, Tesla. I remember Brian saying they would make it, and they did.
Jeff is incredible and so is the band. I LOVE TESLA SO MUCH. THEY ROCK !!!
Seen Tesla live three times. In my top 3 best concerts ever.😎
Tesla is amazing. I have seen them every time they are in town. Even though I have seen them many times, I am still trying to make it to their next show on Saturday. He is too humble.
Funny. I'm at the Chinese restaurant in Georgetown looking across the street at the Georgetown hotel as I'm watching this 🤣🤣🤣 Georgetown, Ca. In the house ✌️😎✌️
Hes soo [ooooooo koolbeans!! Saw them with great white! In salem ore. Great show guys! Got layed twice!!!

My Boys understand the 70s bands after hearing them so much from Me but also onto the 60s & 50s..
Above all.. Since I heard U all.. U,ve become My top fav band..
P.S. I also love Steve Tyler & Mark Slaughter.. Awesome voices..
Love n Hugs TESLA😘💞🌹
wow, to think there would be no little susie had those girls not been there, that song hit me like a ton of bricks when I was a kid, I'm listening to it right now in another tab; also, saw them in 2013, they killed it
There would still be little Susie, just not their cover version of it.
Took my then 18 year old daughter to her first rock concert 4 years ago - Tesla at the Florida Theater in Jacksonville, Florida. Saw them open for - & blow away - Poison around 1990.
I only know of this band this year month ago 2022
This is what I’ve been looking for my whole life love You Jeff
Love Tesla
February in Memphis will be my first live TESLA concert!!! I’m so excited!!!! Love you guys Jeff
I could look at you all day long You are beautiful! Love you and your band!!!!!
I've met JK several times either before or after shows. He/they are so accessible: so down-to-earth--nothing pretentious or fake about them. They are 'genuinely' great guys. #RESPECT
Jeff Keith and the rest of the Tesla guys are the real deal. Wayyyyy back in the day, when they were still City Kidd, they played at my jr high school's Day on the Green; I was already in high school but my friends who were a year behind me got to see them. Later on, I got tix to their 'The Way It Is' video shoot at the Sacramento Convention Center, and I cried when they did the 'Love Song' video shoot at the Cal Expo Amphitheater because I had to work that night. I saw them live in Reno when they opened up for Lynyrd Skynyrd, and then in Sac when they headlined Arco Arena (I think it was the 2nd Arco Arena, not the 1st one).
Tesla is one of the best bands I've seen live, and they've always been proud to be a Sacramento band (as you could tell from this interview with Jeff). They're just a great blues-y, rock'n'roll band, no bullshit group of guys. All I can say is "Thank you!!" to everyone who's been part of the band, original members and later additions. It doesn't get better than this!
That's awesome! My first concert was tesla and great white 1988 Louisville Kentucky! I won't ever forget it!
Tesla has been my favorite band since 1996. Keep on rocking.
I remember calling in to "Rockline" with Lou Brutus after Bust A Nut came out and talking to him. Really cool guy. We were both born in Texarkana so we had something to talk about... Otherwise my 13 year old self would have just been a starstruck teenager stuttering. He was down to earth and didn't rib me for being a kid
Ive always been a fan since i was very young child never had an opportunity to meet or to see them in concert , when i came across the videos on UA-cam 😱, I'll tell you what i cried like that was the best thing that ever happen to me, because i come from the desert so once a month was our trip to town no money but had to load up on cassette tape at the flea market for a cheap price TESLA was always one of my favorite band....YEAH!!! still Rockin Rock On......😘
Tesla has some amazing songs! love their music. Their songs were all over the place, Kshe 95 used to play their songs and still does.
It was great seeing you grow in our hometown, Georgetown , from City Kidd to Tesla! We all knew you were going to make it big! You're awesome Jeff Keith. Love ya, Cheri White
One of the greatest f****** bands ever mechanical resonance and the great radio controversy that fucken album got me through some hard times
Mechanical Resonance is one of the most solid albums ever pressed.
I got to play softball with him when he and the boys was in town in St Louis it was cool
The best voice Texarkana ever produced.
Facts.
Arkansas side too!!
Then he moved to Idabel, Oklahoma
Born in Sacramento. Fuck the haters!
@@andrewingram2108 Jeff was born in Texarkana. What are you saying?
I LOVE TESLA!!!
This dude is cool as hell....Love him.
Thats a great story. Very real dude! I like that!! I used to live in West Sac over the bridge early 90s , listen to Tesla on CD in my 70 Red Ranchero & I remember Alice & Chains. Played the drum, just not my scene then. Some guys broke out of the state prison & stole a Red Elcamino. They mistakin my car for those. I got pulled over at gun point, hands on the roof, I had a shirt/ tie on, our Law Officers figured it wasnt me quick. Crazy times!!!
Absolutely love Tesla! Always be my #1
Im stuck in Texarkana Arkansas born and raised here. My favorite singer is from here too!😁🤗
Jeff Keith and the whole band is great so underated i would love to sing with him awsome voice and music 1 of the best bands
one of the greatest American bands of the 20th century...if they arent in the rock and roll hall they sure is shit should be
Met Jeff a few times with his side bands Bar 7 and Sofa Kings that him and Tommy were playing in during the late 90's before Tesla had rejoined in 2000/2001, and had met them after a show they played in Allentown, PA. as well. It was my third time meeting Jeff and Tommy. Jeff was a cool, down to earth guy, as well as the rest of Tesla. Jeff was nice enough to come off the tour bus after a tiring show he did and was dressed for bed. He didn't mind taking the time for a fan to have his picture taken with me and sign his autograph next to his picture on the fold out cover of Psychotic Supper. The rest of band had already signed it and I had to have Jeff's name to complete it. Troy told me to ask the road manager to take me to the bus to see Jeff.
20 year old rocker here. Fucking awesome band! So underrated
You’re the best, Jeff! Watched you guys a couple weeks ago...amazing show and I was sad to see it end! Can’t wait until next time!
