  • The Match of the Day episode broadcast on this day in 1981, featuring highlights of three FA Cup fifth round games played the previous day (14th February) - Spurs v Coventry, Peterborough v Man City and Wolves v Wrexham. This was one of two seasons in the early 1980s in which MOTD was broadcast on a Sunday afternoon rather than a Saturday night.

A few things different back in the 80's to today . Match of The Day was about all teams in the Football League , not just the Premiership , when players got tackled , they just got up and carried on , no rolling around getting other players booked or sent of . he pitches were awful but the game was more open . And MOTD did not have a room full of ex players on the BBC payroll talking for the sake of it

This was the first ever game I went to, I was a leeds fan (still am) but my dad took me as it was local to where we live, 9yrs old and seeing players I had in my panini sticker book like joe corrigan, Bobby McDonald’ & Tommy Hutchison was amazing, for a kid of my age! When I googled this game a few years ago I found the programme for it and was amused that it was on Valentine’s Day that I went to my first ever live match! Remember watching the final and thinking I had seen those city players on this day! (I always remembered that McDonald handball as the one stand out memory after seeing it on match of the day later)

Glenn Hoddle passed a late fitness test a few hours before the kickoff... The manager inquired, "Are you fit Glenn?", Hoddle replied "Yes Boss".

Great memories,...and football in the 70s and 80s was the best times for me, ...modern football is all about money now,....and the real grittiness and imperfections like muddy pitches, and tough tackling have sadly been eroded out of the game,....the game now is to contrived with perfectly manicured pitches that lack the quaint nostalgia from times long gone,....mores the pity

You are so right. I was just thinking about this the other day. The new stuff is fancy and high tech, but the vibe is terrible compared to the seventies and eighties. The "English" Prem league would be nothing without its high-priced imports. We all know the national team has suffered as a result, but life goes on. Pretty soon the game will be contested between lifelike Japanese robots! Here's to progress! There will never be another Jimmy Hill. Always loved him as a kid (-: Thanks for uploading the memories. They matter!

I always preferred match of the day on a Saturday night instead of Sunday afternoon. Sunday afternoon was always the big match on ITV. Or the regional equivalent. Routine was go to the game on a Saturday afternoon, match of the day Saturday night and big match Sunday afternoon after playing in the morning.

I remember seeing somewhere that the new stand they built at white hart lane ( as was shown in these highlights at an early stage) sent them into some trouble financially. Is that correct??

Paul Dyson (for Coventry City) who blew and sucked at the same time 😂
Smart move replacing him with Mark Hateley. We had Hateley for a season at Portsmouth in 1984 where he scored over 40 goals (if my memory serves me correctly) then we promptly sold him to AC Milan for £1 Million!!!

Who designed that new stand at Wolves. Its half a mile away from the touchline & ruined the atmosphere at Molineux where Wolverhampton Wanderers always gave you great FA Cup ties but they weren't great in the League & mid table for them was acceptable. But eventually they would kop it & down they went. In fact the Midlands clubs where all like that really, only Villa were the one that could win it. Mind you in '71 they were in Div 3 but still got to the League Cup final where they lost to Spurs. Football has gone now to be replaced with a policy where only money counts. The reason to win is now not the glory but making sure you are in a position to maximise millions from the Premier & Championship or whatever they are calling it now. They are trying to call it Premier League 2 so thus the former Div 3, then Div 2, then Div 1 would be Championship? What a joke. Dont watch it, thank god for UA-cam. The two lower leagues is the best real British footy & has a feel of how it was with teams 80% Brits.

Proper football. The premiership is getting boring. This season has been poor. Liverpool are the best team but theres been no challenge. We are constantly told that the standard today is better but is it. I find the football boring. Pass pass pass all the time.
