The Sony DVD/radio sound system doesn't have the optical just the RCA red and white. Yellow for the video which is in the back of the TV. As for the Android box it has HDMI, 3.5m av slot like a phone. And the SPDIF. I have a splitter from a 3.5m headjack to a red and white on the sound system. I have sound and video coming from tv with HDMI for and Android box. I just don't have sound from tv to sound system.
Steve, I am planning a new TV purchase. This video was helpful, but I do have a question. You mention in the set up process the TV speakers need to be turned off to enable to the digital optical output. Is this required with all of these newer sets? Currently, I have the audio outputs connected to a high end vintage audio system which we only use some of the time. We also have the regular audio from the TV available. Is that still possible?
@@TechSteve i have a similar device but what could Cause it to Squeal swaping from youtube to cable tv. sometime also transfers no signal to the amplifier.
5 minutes ago I was thinking of how to plug in my Bose Companion 2 speakers to my LG tv with optical digital out only... this was the first video I clicked. Thank you!
Thanks for making this video.I had already purchased a converter & was able to connect it to my smart TV in 5 minutes with your help. I have an old amplifier connected to boxes that have a excellent sound & did not want to have to purchase a soundbar. €23.18 for a converter or €300 upwards for a soundbar with the kind of quality I prefer especially for music is financially fantastic and more environmentally friendly. So thank you Steve🙏🏾
Earlier I watched your review of a new Samsung TV I grabbed at Costco (really had no idea what I bought) and after I got it hooked up to my PC I realized no sound and my old Dell does not have a digital input. Did another search and bam... there you are again with the perfect answer and links to go get it with all the specs making my life super easy. You are awesome Tech Steve. Thank you.

You can also use an ARC extractor, which works exactly the same, however uses one of the TV's HDMI ports as an output, and connects it via the converter turning it into L/R wires for your audio system, but with the advantage of allowing the TV's remote to adjust the volume
Thank you a lot!!! Last night I check every single cable (out lf few thousands I have in my work room) to convert this tv output to my mixer and found - your video! 🙏🙏🙏 Now I am going to clean mixer and call audio shop (erm... today is lock up here... damn)...
I just realized that my old system just uses RCA connectors/cables to connect audio componets---speakers are just speaker wire---but, you got my brain working...........thanks
Very well explained. 👍 However, I wish all devices still could have analog outputs because an adapter which needs a power supply of it's own is a bit awkward. Of course the benefit of optical output is that it is not galvanic connection so it for example helps preventing ground loops between audio devices.
Oh mah goodness! My Sony Bravia just died, but my Bose 3-2-1 still works, (Bose told me no option for my tv) and the sound on my new tv is absolutely terrible. Just ordered the converter, can’t wait to see if I can make it work! Tech Steve is amazing! This is the kind of guy everyone needs in their life, lol, thanks!
Note: On some TVs - such as my LG - you need to make sure your digital out is set to PCM. Some TVs - such as my LG - have both a PCM and Dolby Digital option. Most DA converters don't work with Dolby Digital, but work only with PCM.
Thank you Tech Steve! Perfect solution. You are the BEST! Thank you for your advice, DAC worked perfectly. Please keep doing what you do, we all appreciate your experience. Continued success to you Tech Steve.
I love using studio monitors for home theater and gaming. As for the home theater, the wife can’t stand getting up to adjust the volume 😛. So I’m going to use this to allow us to adjust the volume on the couch. I was going to use the “Dayton Audio WBA51 Multi-Room Wi-Fi Streamer with AirPlay and Spotify Connect” but it’s $80. So I’m hoping this $23-ish device will work.
Thank you for posting this video. We just bought an LG TV and couldn't set up our 2005 Bose Cinemate speakers because of the cable connections. This optical converter box worked perfectly. Thanks!
I have a sound system that's connected to the convertor. I can get music out of UA-cam. But when I run an app like Disney plus, Hulu, and Netflix i get no sound. Please help
Hi Steve! I'm actually having problems with the setup of the device to convert digital to analog. When I connect the 3.5 mm to 3.5 mm port of my JBL Xtreme portable speaker this one makes a continuous noise and I don't get sound from the TV. Now, there's another element: I happen to have a set top cable box hooked up to the TV, where should I connect the optical cable? From the output port of the TV or the one at the set top cable box in order to get sound? Mightily confused 😕
Perfect explanation!! easy enough setup. Now the issue I have is once I have it hooked to my receiver I seem to only get sound through my left speakers?? I need to know where I went wrong lol any suggestions greatly appreciated.
It blows my mind that they put RF antenna input, but no 3.5mm headphone out? So no wired headphones or regular speakers. Unbelievable! Thanks for the video, this was exactly my problem. I have an 1ch USB mic amp/audio interface.which will try to connect to the USB in the back and see if it can do the job. Edit: usb didn’t work
Only a few years ago I remember a neighbour throwing away a surround sound amp because it didn't have an optical input! I wish I knew then what I know now mate!!
If you are serious about getting a good sound, I recommend paying a bit more money for a quality DAC. These things can cost thousands for high-end stuff, but anything over $200 should be fine for most people.
Thank you for the info. Do you have info on how to connect an audio converter with ARC that can control volume. I don’t want to have to purchase a sound bar
Great video, I bought the analog converter without the remote without knowing and I have to get up all the time to adjust the volume. Going to reorder this one with the volume remote.
Yes saw your video liked it but I have a problem I'm trying to huck up,Twin Tower Lansing speaker,to my Samsung 2008 home theater system what all do you think I need??
Good video, well explained. I have one issue. I have the optical output on a smart tv but want to connect to 2 analogue speakers for stereo sound. The DAC only has one set of RCA outputs and I need two sets - one set for each of the speakers. What can I do, if anything? Thanks

Hi Steve! One question: which sounds better, the fiber optics cable to the analog converter and rca connectors or use the TV headphones output with a 3.5 to rca cables to the sound system? Thank you!
Hello friend,. Can I connect digital output from Android TV to headphones in this way? In this case, will it make difference than using Bluetooth connection for audio output??
Great work man. My dac doesnt have a power cable. When i connected the dac by usb with the pc it worked. But when connected by fiber cable with the tv it didnt show power on. Maybe i have to give power with the usb cable?
Thanx Steve. I saw that video, but what I need to know is how to split two separate digital tv's with a digital to analog converter box with only one digital port! Is there a digital splitter to do this?
You have to look for a digital mixer, think of it as a switch that a dj use to play 2 audio sources. You can’t run 2 audio sources into one input because one can feedback into the 2nd output
Hi Steve. I am using IPad Pro via VAVA HDMI adaptor to my TV, and the sound is going to TV speakers. (But it makes an great monitor) Can I get the sound out of the tv and to my Studio Monitor Speakers?
Plan B. If I purchese a sound bar connecting it to the TV via optical can I connect the analog speakers that are wired throughout the house to the sound bar?
3 years back, to get a better sound, I connected my TV to a set of 6 external, powered speakers, via the TV 3.5mm headphone socket. Seems to work OK, but I have always wondered if using the optical cable output from the TV through "some sort of digital to analogue converter" into my external speakers, would produce a better sound. This video was just what I was looking for. However, scrolling through some recent posts below, it seems that the TV headphone output socket is doing that already.....so I won't improve the audio quality by going down the optical output/DAC route. Is that correct?
Great suggestion. I am looking to use this with a Samsung TV and struggling with the hassles of Bluetooth convertors. Will this provide audio to standard 3.5MM headphones like I use with my older Iphone, or does it need a separate power source?
Tech Steve, I have a Bose Cinemate Surround sound with two small speakers and a subwoofer I bought 14 years ago. My speakers do not have any analog outputs. My two small speakers go to the subwoofer and the subwoofer has a power source. The analog outputs are on the remote box.
Speaker like this doesn’t have audio outputs the remote box should have inputs unless it has an output for headphones. As long as they are self powered it should work no problem
Nice video. My daughter has a 10 year old 60” Sharp Aqous tTV in her room. I bought her the Sony STRDH190190. She loves it with her Sony tower speakers. She asked me to hook it up to her TV or PlayStation for stereo sound while gaming or watching movies with her friends. The TV doesn’t have the 2 RCA jacks just the video 1 and video 2 which won’t work. The TV & PlayStation has an optical out. Can I use an optical out to analog converter to make this work? Thanks for any help. I only have a week left to go to Best Buy and exchange it for one that will work.
Nice vid! So I bought this for my smart samsung tv, and what I don't understand, the audio only works with UA-cam, no sound comes out when it's on netflix, prime video or cable tv. I makes no sense. Any idea what's going on with that? Thanks.
Never heard of that one, with just TV speakers. If you had an audio system sometimes you have to switch to pcm digital out. Try to unplug and plug back in
My 2018 Sony Bravia (KD65X750F) has optical out and my Logitech Z-5500 has optical in and decodes Dolby, THX and dts, but it doesn't sound anywhere near as good as my older sound card on the same speakers via L, R, Center/Sub coax. Might converting the tv's optical signal to L, R, C/S coax improve the sound?
Hi Steve thank you very mch. Just bought my tcl 43 bt tried connecting audio output with a 3.5mm jack. Now my tv is stuck on headphone mode? Will the convertor still work?
@@TechSteve Hi Steve. Thank you for getting back. I tried unplugging the jack but the tv is in headphone mode still. I later Kinda wiggled it later at an angle and tricked the tv to use its internal speakers. Still the audio out jack is in its port....
I have a digital port and an analog port (3.5mm) on the computer's built-in sound card. Can I play music through both ports at the same time? The optical port is connected to Yamaha receiver of the and to the speakers port (3.5mm) I want to connect a pair of computer speakers and i want to hear together. How can i do that? Thanks!
Hi, I'm in the opposite situation. My TV doesn't have optical and I've just bought a home cinema the requires to work to be connected with and optical plug. What should I do ? Can it work at all ? TV is a Linsar 60led900f Home cinema is JBL cinema SB170 Sorry I'm french my English isn't great.
Hi great and simple video. I have a question. I have an audiophile of @ acoustics speakers 3020i connected with my pioneer vsxD712. Would you recon a good DAC for the sources like computer desktop, record player and for tv as well. I am really confused on this. I thought my VSX D 712 av receiver already contains a DAC. Can you please clarify and suggest me plz
Hi Steve, I just can across your video with the same exact problem. I also got the same DAC. I'm having an issue connecting my Yamaha stereo receiver RX-V390 to the DAC. I am however, able to choose and see the DAC on my Q60t and can see the audio signal move up and down. But the sound does not come out of the Bose speakers that are connected to my old stereo. Any idea on how I can fix it. I've tried a few things with no luck. Thank you for the informative video.
Hello I have a Sony 4K it has both headphone jack and optical I’m using a old Dolby Prologic surround sound analog amp I have connected it to the headphone jack on the TV my my question is would it sound better if I used Digital to analogue converter instead
good day. would that be good to use if my tv speaker are not working, even the headset output of my smart tv are not working. thats why im about to used that kind of converter. because my smart tv has a spdif/toslink. thank you so much for your respond.. Godbless...
@@TechSteve will the TV remote also control the volume of the speakers or do you have to use the extra remote? I'm looking to connect a standard speaker to a Samsung TV that only has optical out but I want to be able to control the audio using the TV remote.
Thank you for sharing this! Question: Does the converter stay ON if you don't turn it off, or does it eventually shut off automatically? I assume it would need to be powered up separately from the TV.
@@TechSteve I'm sorry. By "powering up", I am referring to turning the converter on and off. Would I need to turn it on separately every time I turn on my TV?
@@TechSteve I just got one and connected it up. The only downside is that the audio signal from the optical port doesn't respond to the TV remote's volume control. The volume has to be controlled separately @ the speaker.
I am in a Condo and would like to hook up 3 headphones to the TV or Sound bar which has Opti Out. Is there a device that would split Opti Out into 3 - 4 headphone jacks? The input to the sound bar is currently on HDMI ARC. Thanks,
I plug in directly rca to 3.5mm into headphone jack on tv, got sound but not rly that great, would it be any better with converter and optical cables u showed in video or would it be just the same?
... This is old gen like me. Its Bose with integrated amp with an analog Pioneer equalizer prior to it. Advised by my cousin ( electronics enggr)... 14 years back. Sound qlty is good...😊
I remember the 901s great speakers, if I remember correctly you had to use the tape monitors system to use the eq. It’s amazing that you still have this system. Definitely valuable
Just so you know, you won't need this if you have RCA input/output on both of your devices. Check your display and speaker system before you decide to buy this. Great video, though. Thanks.
Yes I'm also having a delay problem and can't sync it enough with the visuals using the lag TV settings to match it up. Back to the drawing board for me unfortunately. I think it's because I have ps4 hdmi to converter IN and red/white RCA OUT to speakers head unit. It's just to much going on. I will add it's not the identical converter you have it's a cheaper version.
Thank you for the video, unfortunately I couldn't get a converter to work with Samsung UN65NU6900. I connected to a sound system that's connected to speakers through out the house via optical and set switch to T for optical input, go thu sound settings on TV and nothing, no sound, I plug in headphones and get a terrible screeching sound, I then tried a phone speaker that I know works because I use it with my phone....I plug it into the headphones jack on converter and screaching sound again. Any other ideas of what I could try? The converter I purchesed looks exactly like the one you are using but without a remote.

It works but a HDMI ARC on a sound bar is so much better and cleaner
@@TechSteve 👍🏻
Anything changes about the sound quality? Before analog to your new optical?
Is the audio great
Can the DAC be connected to the TV and then output headphones so as not to disturb the family members with sound??? Please enlighten me 🙏🙏🙏
Hi, any suggestion that use similar digital to analog converter will cause burst noise when changing hdmi input from tv?
Nope
What loss of quality would I get coming from cd player with digital out to Analogue sound mixer?
Will the rca still provide surround sound?
I need an answer to this too
Dolby pro logic which is analog surround
Great suggestion. I am looking to use this with a Samsung TV and struggling with the hassles of Bluetooth convertors. Will this provide audio to standard 3.5MM headphones like I use with my older Iphone, or does it need a separate power source?
It will not power headphones, only line level inputs
They do make an optical to Bluetooth adapter, you can try one. I’ve seen them on Amazon
@@TechSteve Thanks Steve. I appreciate it.
@@TechSteve Thx. I'll keep you posted.
Does it support 5.1 channel on toslink? Thanks
no. this is stereo only.
Yes
Help- worked perfect for 8 months. Now scratchy. Narrowed down to either this device or the TV. Any ideas on how to troubleshoot?
I only used it to film the video, I would reach out to the manufacturer after unplugging it to try to reset
Try to unplug and plug back in
Does it improve sound quality? My tv have optical sound port and 3.5mm port also so should i go with dac ?
No just plug directly into your TV
@@TechSteve thanks for your kind reply , as your reply I change my mind . thanks
It allows you to turn the volume up? I have headphones and have a problem with the basic no volume switch model being too quiet
Have you tried to unplug or factory reset? With this adapter you would have to use an audio system
Thanks!
Hello is it possible to have both tv stock speakers and external speakers work at the same time?
Hi, I'm in the opposite situation.
My TV doesn't have optical and I've just bought a home cinema the requires to work to be connected with and optical plug.
What should I do ? Can it work at all ?
TV is a Linsar 60led900f
Home cinema is JBL cinema SB170
Sorry I'm french my English isn't great.
Can you use the tvs remote control to adjust the volume when you connected the tv with the speakers using the adapter.
Watch the video
I would live it like it is. The headphones outputs are already doing that
@@TechSteve thanks for saving me some money 👍
good day.
would that be good to use
if my tv speaker are not working,
even the headset output of my smart tv are not working.
thats why im about to used that kind of converter. because my smart tv has a spdif/toslink.
thank you so much for your respond.. Godbless...
Sure why not
Thanks for the great video.
Does the remote control the volume of the speaker or the tv?
The speakers plugged into it
@@TechSteve will the TV remote also control the volume of the speakers or do you have to use the extra remote? I'm looking to connect a standard speaker to a Samsung TV that only has optical out but I want to be able to control the audio using the TV remote.
Optical is light it can’t be controlled until converted, there’s no way
I think I love you Steve. Thank you so much dude.
Lol, thanks
With this device I should be able to use the speakers connected to my receiver on my new 65 Samsung TV. Thank you Steve.
As long if it has analog inputs
Thank you for sharing this! Question: Does the converter stay ON if you don't turn it off, or does it eventually shut off automatically? I assume it would need to be powered up separately from the TV.
Yes, would use a separate USB adapter
@@TechSteve I'm sorry. By "powering up", I am referring to turning the converter on and off. Would I need to turn it on separately every time I turn on my TV?
My apologies I didn’t test that part. Some people use the usb on the TVs that’s way i said that.
@@TechSteve Oh, I see! I didn't realize it could utilize the USB port on the TV. That's awesome. Thanks!
Thanks,
Search amazon
@@TechSteve is this work for 5.1 speakers and get surround sound
I plug in directly rca to 3.5mm into headphone jack on tv, got sound but not rly that great, would it be any better with converter and optical cables u showed in video or would it be just the same?
I haven’t tried, I would consider speakers that has a optical input or HDMI arc
Good content man! Hope you become big one day!
Thanks
Good presentation..👍 Can I use the analog cables ( red & white) from convertor line out to line in of ext amp..??
Yes, but a pre amp would be better
@@TechSteve ...Yes to a Bose speaker with integrated amp, connected through an equalizer..!
You may have to test that one, I haven’t seen system with equalizer in over 10yrs.
Can I use the audio out and still also use the TV speakers at the same time.? I want to be able to use two sound output devices at the same time.
Only if you’re TV allow you to switch to optical plus speakers like most LGs
Hey Steve! How do I do the opposite of this? I have an optical sound bar that I want to hook up to my computer's 3.5mm jack. Thanks!
See if this will work amzn.to/2On7IqS
@@TechSteve You da MAN Steve!
tv I have lg I have connected to the receiver but I have the connection HDM should I leave the other box or leave the set top box OTT
What type of splitter would I use to connect two digital tv's to one digital to analog converter box?
Hdmi spliter
Just so you know, you won't need this if you have RCA input/output on both of your devices. Check your display and speaker system before you decide to buy this. Great video, though. Thanks.
That’s correct, I’m assuming people are watching who doesn’t have that
I want to order this kind of converter for my Samsung Smart TV. sound output. Where I can place an order and how? Nice explanation,
Steve, is there an audio delay using a DAC? Is there sound from all channels and smart tv apps?
I didn’t notice any but i did just use to make the video for you guys.
@@TechSteve Thanks. I've read some reviews where there may be a delay in ms during the converting process.
