I mean I don't know how heavy that bull is but when I was 16 I had a 570kg horse land on me and I managed to walk away fine.. Granted my clothes were fucked but I was relatively uninjured.
I HAVE seen one go vertical, I've seen them not only NOT target the rider but trot like a baby to the pen afterwards, with or WITHOUT the bucking strap. I went 5.7 seconds on one-black Angus, little and quick as a snake. The best start training at about 18 months old.

Not going to happen if you damage the animal's balls. The flank strap goes around the flanks, surprisingly enough. Watch in x0.25 speed and you can see it's not close to the genitals. The rope encourages the bull to buck, coz it's trying to throw it off. If its nuts were in pain it would flinch more than buck. Yank a man's jewels and his first instinct is to protect himself, first reaction to the pain is to close up defensively, not jump around. Same story for a bull.

The rope is loose enough for them to think they can kick it off, or they want the rider off. Some of them just know what their job is. They aren't in pain, the people in these videos care a hell of a lot more about these animals then you do.
So many times he could easily have come down on or kicked the rider and he appeared to deliberately avoid them. Other than his energy level he looked quite controllable for the crew.
of course they avoid the riders, they don't wanna participate in this. they prod and kick the bull to get it going, and once it's going there's a metal weight on a piece of rope which whips the bull until it stops bucking. rodeos are just bullshit and animals die too often. fuck them riders, I nope they get trampled hard.

I thought it was really poor of the PBR to not do a nice long segment highlighting Asteroid's career like they did Bushwhacker. Hell, Asteroid came out of retirement not up to his old standards and still went unridden. He was sharp as a tack. He should have had one more title to his credit too. He got ripped off IMHO.
Asteroid was, is, my all time favorite bull, rest his awesome bovine soul. He was a great athlete, and really did seem to enjoy what he did. He was one of the rankest, for sure, but he also had a sweet disposition. It speaks well of his owner and handlers that he was so good-natured, it's a very telling sign that he was never treated cruelly. He was just a total pro, and could turn off that wildness as soon as his rider was off. No rage or impulse to stomp or injure the riders. He was a gentleman, like Little Yellow Jacket. Asteroid enjoyed getting his head scratched, he was such a nice bull. Once he bucked off the rider, he would just coolly run back to the chute. I guess he made the bullfighters' job a little bit boring, but that's alright with me.
The best bucking bulls always seem to enjoy it and treat it like a game. While many of the others don't like being ridden and continue to attack the rider and bull fighters.

His first owner got so discouraged when his trainers would ride him around the pasture and he would not buck at all, until the day a trainer got caught in one of the straps, and poor Bodacious freaked out. Something about that experience was so traumatic for him, he never wanted to have anyone ride on his back again, so after that he was too wild, he played too rough, and injured 3 different riders. Tuff's injuries were the worst. Eventually Bo's later owner realized something he should have seen from the git-go, that Bodacious should be retired as a bucker and employed as a stud bull, hopefully the champion breeding kind.
The meanest bull ever was Bodacious in my opinion. Just ask the great bull rider Tuff Hedeman who he almost killed. His last owner retired him because he said he did not want to see him kill anyone. Mike Lee lives in Northeast Texas close to my granddaughter and son-in-law who know him. Mike was a world champion and is a great person. One of my heroes and bull riders was Lane Frost from Oklahoma who was killed when he was gored by a bull. The movie "8 Seconds" is about his life.

It's called bull riding. A cowboy rides the bull and can only hold on with one hand and can never touch the bull with his other arm. He has to ride the bull for 8 seconds. If he reaches 8 seconds he gets 50 points. The judges then rate the bull up to a score of 50 based on how difficult he made the ride. The higher he jumps and the harder he bucks the higher he score. Then they combine 50 from rider with the score of the bull.
Asteroid, relatively he doesn't look so massive but amazing twist turn leap & kick! Bull can jump about higher any I've seen. Wonder of that's measured?
Is the first rider shown ok? I noticed he couldn't get up and escape like the rest of them and when he did get up, he went right back to the ground. It looked like he got his leg stomped on
I don't claim to know anything about riding bulls, and don't plan to, but this bull goes close to having his back straight up, and would stand a good chance of flipping over forward, and landing on the rider. Also, if a rider gets slid too far back, he could get thrown 30 feet, or more. Not me brother, at any time in my 69 years. I'm stoved up enough, just from a fairly normal life of being a maintenance mechanic, and cutting wood and such, at home. Don't get me wrong; I admire the men who do this, and have considered myself a little on the crazy side, but they have me beat by a mile, or more.
