This is my most favourite song of all time. I try, sometimes, to avoid listening to it, only because once I do, I really cry then send it to all my friends I feel like it's the most perfect song I've ever heard....seriously. I've never, ever, been able to listen to it without crying
this song is so beautiful, it brings tears to my eyes. So many ypung people were married this way and did not found happiness. Thank you Loreena, this oneof my favourite songs. Your voice suits it perfectly.
She rather the guy who'd entice any woman who e'er e'er he saw over the guy who actually loves her? And why isn't Anachie rushing into to stopping the wedding! Where the heck is this dude? Where is the evidence of their previous relationship? Why doesn't the father give an argument in comparison to Anachie's love for her as he does with Lord Sultan? Also, why doesn't she protest that Anachie loves her? She gives love to Anachie but only a minute statement from Anachie. Can we really trust a guy who abandoned her? Final knocker--Anachie kissed her her lips til his heart turned to stone. Not brittle. Not broken. STONE. Stone, rock-solid hard. This guy's been playing tricks on poor Jeannie deceiving her as if he wants to love her leading her to obsess after him going off enticing other women (which was more than likely why he is gone so long upon the sands, so long upon the floods), comes back to kiss her in pretending that he actually loves her and is heart turns to stone as a result of his coldness toward her, his hard-heartedness. She would have been happy with Lord Sultan. How despicable a liar can a womaniser be My heart burns with hatred and rage toward Anachie
+newenglandsun her father recognized her preexisting and current relationship with anachie "you must...leave anachie". Her friends knew about and recognized the preexisting and current relationship with anachie "they have married your Jeanie" . Anachie knew and recognized the relationship "lead me to the chamber where my love she lies in". Anachies heart turned to stone in that it stopped and presumably because he loved Jeanie like she loved him and robbed of each others love they both died. "he died in the chamber where his love she lies in" "the day that Jeanie married was the day that Jeanie died"
You silly sausage. Anachie couldn't make his case because he went away on a boat. He wasn't there to make his case because he had to go away for an undisclosed reason. He father arranged the marriage to the sultan, there was no love there only what the father had to gain from a better relationship from the marriage. Anachie's heart turned to stone after realizing Jeane was dead abs he died of his broken heart too. Did you not listen to song?
i have been listening to her for many years....i fall in love with so many songs, then I find a gem like this ....probably heard it on the tour back a yr and a half ago
My long lost love (and Irish beauty)...thank you so much for introducing this artist to me in my youth. 26 years later listening to LMcK makes me think of your beautiful hair that would turn red in the sunlight.
This is the most beautiful of all versions of all songs ever sung ever anywhere. It really is my favorite. I have to not listen to it too much so I don't get used to it!
Thank you. I've never heard this beautiful music. My soul goes out to A. Gordon. I feel as though there are so many others with somewhat the same story and sadness where once was enlightenment. I'd like to heal the world. I believe this song may be the beginning of helping others to feel as though they're not so very alone. Thanks.
Thank you for uploading this song, and for including a display of the lyrics. This song always gives me chills. My wife and I own every one of Loreena's CDs. "Annachie Gordon" is at the top of the list of my favorite songs by this very gifted artist.
THANK YOU for creating & uploading this video of one of my favorite Loreena songs. It is all the more special that you included a display of the lyrics. The music of Loreena McKennitt is in a class of its own (IMHO). Her rendition of "Annachie Gordon" has always given me goosebumps (for the music and the story). Truth be told, I get teary-eyed listening to this song. Something that lies buried deep in the memory of a past life, not doubt.
This is a great version of this song. I was first introduced to this when Sinead did an acapella version as an encore at her concert in 91. The lyrics were a bit different but this version is just as powerful. Considering I have never found Sinead's version recorded it was astounding it stuck with me for so long.
Thank you for putting this grreat song up for all to listen to. I've been looking on and off for a few hours, then TADA! I had to read it twice. Thank you. Her voice and the lyrics are so sweet and soft, low and high, even true and made-to-fit style of song.So many have lived and sadly will to the underlined meaning of this song. I hope that it may give them comfort to know that they're very much not alone. Thank you, again and again. AL
I never heard of this singer before but put in Annachie Gordan in to see if I had the lyrics right......I only ever heard Mary Black singing it.... I’m now a huge fan - what an incredible voice. I’ve cried many times listening to this
I was there, too. It was the experience of a lifetime. Never thought I'd get a chance to hear her perform live. Caroline Lavelle's added presence put the evening absolutely over the moon for me.
Yes, Caroline is a very talented musician she really added to it. :-) After the show, Loreena came out to the merchandise counter and took photos with us and signed autographs! It was a magical evening! She is so humble and down to earth.
Oh gosh! I wish I would have known she was going to come out. We would have stayed longer. So glad you got the opportunity to spend a few minutes with her. Incredible!
Just saw her this past week in PA. What a treat. I didn't get photos with her or anything, but just to hear her sing live was amazing. Her performance of this song was perfect. The family member i took had never heard her works before and texted me the next day, asking which of her albums it was on so she could buy it. =)
The older versions of the song also start "Buchan is bonny", it being a town in that region, I believe. It also makes more sense. I think the "harking" word came in with Mary Black.
I just saw Loreena live last night in Dallas. This was her third song. I sat there in the darkness of the auditorium, tears streaming down my face. "Father, look -- I am dying..."
Jeannie is telling her father that she will never have a child by Saltoun (1-she finds him repulsive, 2-she's in love with Gordon). Here are 2 versions from F.J.Child's collection English and Scottish Popular Ballads published late 1800's: But unto young Salton I’ll never bear a son; For son or for daughter, I’ll never bow my knee. But it is to Lord Saltoun I’ll never bear a son; A son nor a daughter I’ll never bear to he. J's dad arranged the marriage because Saltoun's rich; AG's poor.
Saltoun is correct. This is an old Scottish folk song. According to Gerald Auchinachie (a professor with the family name of the young man Jeannie loves), the rich man she's being forced to marry is Lord Saltoun, "a Fraser of Saltoun near Fraserburgh in the extreme north-east corner of Aberdeenshire" in Scotland.
+Metalhaid ...maybe because the message is kind of .....dumb. We are to believe Annachie has kept it in his pants while he is sailing the world .......yeah right!
I realize this is an old thread, but there is an important point that was overlooked. The woman (or more likely girl considering the era)may have said no, at least partially because she was in love with the title character, but the real tragedy of the story is much worse. The story is about a girl whose parents gave her to a man to be repeatedly raped for life, and be forced to have, and raise his rape babies. And she was supposed to be loyal, devoted, and grateful to her rapist. She killed herself to escape a fate she considered worse than death. This wasn't uncommon in the past, but it doesn't make it any less horrific. I'm not sure if the original writer understood this, but artists telling the story now would.
Through out time this happened numerous times, other people (parents, church, ect.) deciding who you love for you,so this is pretty much a true story. Great song!
Is there a legend behind this song? Is Saltoun a location in the Isles? Listening closely, Annachie may originally have been a woman. Before Romanization, Celts were accepting of Nature.
***This masterpiece song gets me every time and I need to listen at least 5 times in row. Jesus said suffer the little children to come to Him ... for such is the kingdom of heaven. Very touching song, singing, words and music. Wish we knew who the sweet little girl was that narrated it. She is most likely a young lady now. This song is sooo underated and under exposed to the world! Touching! Faith Hope & Love - the greatest of these is love! John @***
I wonder which Lord Saltoun of Philorth it is who's mentioned in the song. For that matter, it could be one of the Abernethy Lord Saltouns. The people who write folk songs never seem to be very specific, do they? Maybe they never imagine they'll continue to be sung for as long as they often are.
It is an amazing song, I wish more people were into celtic music, maybe we will have a better world then
I listen to a great deal of music, and this is the most beautiful song I have ever heard. Period.
This song always 'breaks my heart' when I hear it. A wonderful voice of Loreena McKennitt.
I realize I am pretty off topic but do anyone know a good place to watch newly released series online ?
One of Loreena's best. I love this.

I like the broken English one better honestly but it’s cool to see the original
This song is far from heaven
Heartwrenchingly beautiful and so sad ! And a voice like an angel !

Omg I have listened to this song for, never without crying my eyes out
Utterly beautiful and pulls so much at the heart strings. Brings tears to my eyes. Her songs are so brilliant without exception.
This was used as a lullaby in my family. Needless to say, I didn't get the meaning of it until I was much, MUCH older!

Never can listen to this song without shedding a tear or two, such is the powerful and beautiful way LM sings this utterly tragic story.
I am not on this earth when I lay and listen to her stories. They carry me far and I never want to come back

Yes indeed. Love her more than Enya.
She is Canadian
She is even better in person.
@fionaclong - Sineád O'Connor did a beautiful version too ❤

Beautiful song. Thanks also for adding the lyrics -- nice job :)

a beautiful song from a brilliant album
She’s a real treasure.
This song gets me every time

"Auchanachie Gordon" is a Scottish c. 18th folk song. A fine song well sung! Loreena Mckennit is exceptionally suitable to sing it! 💙
Proof that one CAN die of a broken heart when true love is forbidden.......
Then he is " beaten with a stick with my name on it the rest of his life"
As it is said, look up the definition of perfection and this song is the first definition shown.
I saw Loreena perform this song live last night at the Barrymore Theater in Madison. She is absolutely amazing!!!!

Buchan is the name for a whole area north of Aberdeen.
Ana except the lyrics actually make sense.
Real talk tho this is beautiful.

same thing happened to me a yr or more sgo...she opened with sammain night....tears just started flowing....i was 8 ft away from her
Que historia tan preciosa, y que triste. Qué música tan maravillosa
1st time I heard this song I cried...I still get teary eyed when I hear this song...loreena makes it 1000x sadder *sigh* hopeless romantic forever
Loreena very expertly combines beauty and sorrow.
This is the Celtic version of the beautiful Romeo and Juliet story

Possibly as well. Human events are complex. Old ballads are rich in complexity.
It all fits together.
First heard on a Celtic Woman compilation.....that I now can't find anywhere, even on You tube

I LOVE THIW SONG
This is the original story of Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare was a thief.
Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet was based mostly on the poem Romeus and Juliet. =)
That in itself was supposedly from some other, older source.
Is there a legend behind this song? Is Saltoun a location in the Isles?
Listening closely, Annachie may originally have been a woman. Before Romanization, Celts were accepting of Nature.
To what odd references do you refer?

However, there are odd references in the song. It's established that some Fairy Tales, etc., changed gender references.

I think its an Asian Sultan, hence why Annachie must travel for a long time by sea to get to Jeannie
Matthew Zunder Annachie was on his way home. It's a Scottish ballad, Saltoun is a Scottish name.
Very good hen don't know hoos the best u or the unthanks both superb 🐶☘️☘️☘️woof

I've not heard that exact wording.
This is Loreena's version of "Romeo & Juliet"....same story, supposed to be married to noble Paris although she loves Romeo. Same story end.
