My fave Unthanks track. Saw them at Exeter last neet 20.4.22. I just found out they grew up in Ryton where all my school mates lived. I went to school at Hookergate, High Spen, & lived at Sherburn Park Estate, Rowlands Gill, 1971-1977. Then lived in Hexham, Fenham, Blackhall Mill, Gosforth, Sandyford until 1993. I sadly haven't made the long trip from Exeter to the Toon since.💔 My ❤️ sadly misses the North East. Geordies shall inherit the earth. PS fave Geordie language' Haddaway and Sh.te' and commonly heard in Hexham Market by owd wifes: 'Eeeh aah went past mesell' Thanks Unthanks hearing your voices speaking & singing Geordie takes me back to them deas😄
The heart and soul of Northumberland, mesmerizing THE TRUE SPIRIT OF SONG. WE NEED MORE OF THIS OR ENGLISH FOLK WILL BE LOST, ITS OUR HERITAGE DON'T LET IT GO.
In case you have a short memory north tyne WAS Northumberland until Maggie changed the map, I never mentioned where they were from only that their songs and music in general is rooted in the spirit of Nothumberland and I'm pretty sure they spent a fair amount of time in the Allendale area.@@BenZaniline
I love The Unthanks. Such pure and beautiful voices. This song makes me weep every time, along with The Testimony of Patience Kershaw...gotta go, I'm welling up.
This could be a Van Morrison song.....the drone effect is simply mesmerising, the acoustic vibes, the vamped piano are good but, the fragile lead vocals of Becky and the harmony vocals of big sister Rachel are outstanding.
A perfect song for a long walk across for windswept northern hills and misty moors. A bewitching and brilliant performance. This band are wonderful live. Go and see them if you can.
lovely voice ..... i like this a lot,..and i slightly prefer her voice to her sisters voice too,...both beautiful girls , and singers, but she has a soft smokey tone to hers, that makes me feel very laid-back and relaxed!... wonderful!
Ironic the best versions of this beautiful old Scottish song I have heard, including this one, are from non-Scots. But who cares who sings it, as long as it works, as this definitely does.
the trilling piano becomes irritating - also this is such a long song it needs to be got through without too much delay. Mary' Black's version is perfect.

I love this, haunting piano chords and all. Sounds like a ghost of a memory echoing down the dusty pine corridors of time.
So wunderschön. Danke dafür. Gruß aus Lübeck 💕❤️💕

Tyey're from Ryton, Tyne and Wear - not Northumberland...

Amazing voices. A beautiful and original version.

I don't think anything can beat the Nic Jones version for sheer emotional impact, but this comes close.
Personally, my sympathies lie with Lord Salton, who seems like a decent bloke.
Love it
Hahaha same
Annachie for the UK

They don’t need to be Scots, they’re Northumbrian lasses. 😎
