This is Saturday number two at the Black Cat; last Saturday I caught Girls Against Boys ( • 2022-10.15 Girls Again... ) with J Robbins ( • 2022-10.15 Girls Again... ) of Jawbox and was able to secure my same viewing spot to shoot June of 44!
I was in front of Jeff Mueller this go-round and did something different then when J Robbins was in front of me. When Jeff approached the mic, I tilted my phone upwards and returned back to its original position when he pulled away. This caused a halo-effect with the lighting which disappeared when I re-adjusted. I'm thinking a filter for the future? I'll have to research that...
Anyhoo, I remembered my difficulties shooting ultra-wide so I stuck to wide-angle for the night. I zoomed in when Fred Erskine played trumpet or when Sean Meadows sang; zooming any closer would have given me that fuzzy look when I recorded American Nightmare at Furnace Fest so I stopped when it felt I was pushing it.
The recorded sound lived up to expectation. I used my external Shure mic and minimized volume levels so I wouldn't get bad distortion. This made clean-up during post such an enjoyable task because I didn't have to do much.
As for my film app, I stuck with MoviePro. Apple releases iOS 16.1 on 10/24 and say it should fix the bugs which prohibited Filmic Pro and Beast Cam from recognizing external mic connections. If not, I'll stick with what's working.
I didn't mention this before but I'll address it now. Those quick jumps you see both closing in and moving away are a result of my zooming. I'm thinking the app is adjusting the best it can because I'm doing it so quickly that it just jumps closer/farther without showing the slow adjustments. I thought about this and will see if adjusting zoom speed might fix this. I'm also sure a quick Google search will turn up explanations/solutions.
And that's essentially it. I hope you enjoy the show as much as I enjoyed shooting it. This band was so pivotal in influencing a lot of the math/post-rock/punk we hear today that I was both ecstatic and honored to have captured this band's performance to save and publish here on YT.
