Through sheer will, Nomi wrestles with the note, refusing to let it defeat him. At the end of this feat, the slight and dignified upward inflection of Nomi’s head indicates to the viewer that he has won."
What Power art thou, Who from below, Hast made me rise, Unwillingly and slow, From beds of everlasting snow! See'st thou not how stiff, And wondrous old, Far unfit to bear the bitter cold. I can scarcely move, Or draw my breath, I can scarcely move, Or draw my breath. Let me, let me, Let me, let me, Freeze again... Let me, let me, Freeze again to death!
I can't be the only person physically bothered by this performance. The guy died months later from AIDS, which becomes painful only weeks after it starts to "hit". This guy is as skinny as a rail, his face looks like its carved out of stone, and the failures of his breathing techniques and the desperation to hang onto the notes like a hero all show a dying man singing about a dying slowly and agonizingly. You just can't write this stuff. My favorite performance of all time, hands down.
I'm considered to be a "tough" person. Not tough as in "fight me, bro!". I mean tough enough to work Hospice for years, do my own beloved grandmother's post mortem care and help load her onto the funeral home stretcher, and not take myself out of the game after burying my own child. I can't watch this entire video without tears running down my cheeks.
This makes me cry, he was dying at the time(it's very clear he wasn't feeling well and he was very fragile), very ill but he was there on stage, giving his last breath to us, thank you Klaus, God bless you.
Well, of course he was dying. We all do, every day. He just was aware of this, in a very intimate way, and just gave his VERY best, knowing it, of course. Best of Kudos!
He's dying, walking with difficulty. He knows that, nobody else knows, singing for the last time, giving all of his astonishing talent, alone in the lights. Every frame breaks my heart : the song itself is wonderful and he sings about his own death. What really makes me cry is the last frame : his eyes are dead, and Klaus Nomi shakes his head, suddenly alive, expressing "I did it".
It's almost too much to watch. You can see the disease taking over, the fragility of Klaus and the careful steps he takes, and hear the pain and longing in the performance. AIDS was a mystery disease at the time, and this song so beautifully reflects the feelings and mood of that time (even if it was written centuries before). All in all...breathtaking.
constantinos schinas AIDS and HIV did not just affect those who did not “treat themselves well,” it also affected people who had blood transfusions or people who came into contact with bodily fluids of those already infected. I don't know WHERE I was when Klaus Nomi was performing (oh yeah, Florida--need I say more?) Now I'm a fan, about 38 years after he passed away. Very moving piece and performance.
I see Klaus Nomi had a strong inner drive to perform and sing 'The Cold Song' from Purcell. Though fragile and at the same time a strong man, he wants his audience to know in a very powerful way what is right in front of him. Death! It is showing his courage and vulnerability. In my opinion he is an example for everyone. Live and express yourself with your abilities and creativity. No matter what people might think of you.
why, why a person like Klaus had to die? this life isn´t fair. When he sang this, he maybe was so ill, his breath was difficult, but he was on the stage like a complet artist.
When he ends the song, holding that final note as he sings the word "Death", there is a look on his face that I cannot describe, but sends chills down my spine.
It’s as if he knows how weak he is and how his body is failing him and will end with death yet found the strength to hold the note and finish into applause. Like a swan song.
That expression was to convey his power. Maybe even he wasn't sure he could do it but by the end he is surprised by his own fortitude. Then with his chin held high, he announced to the world that the body may falter but the spirit prevails. Godspeed, Klaus.
This is my favorite performance of Nomi. The anguish and sorrow I see in his eyes... truly, seeing this performance brings me tears of joy and sadness. I believe this was filmed mere months prior to his death. He didn't exude talent, he was just him, being the triumphant, simple man that he was personified in Nomi. A tragic loss to arts and music and the world... If you turn his name 180 clockwise, it reads 'I WON'.
and when you read all about him and realise he is singing about death and being "out in the cold" only shortly before dying of AIDS alone and abandoned by friends who were all to frightened to visit him in the hospital, it makes it the more poignant and touching.... Wearing the collar and make up to hide the Kaposi's sarcoma.... Unforgettable

But he still had that powerful voice, and it's without a doubt one brilliant performance from Klaus Nomi, who would be gone from us less than eight months later. God rest your soul, Klaus. You are sadly missed but fondly remembered.

I'm doing this song for my final performance in History of Opera class, and I never realised how hard it is to sing it so slow--I ended up speeding up my song to just under four minutes. This truly is an incredible performance.
There was so much pain and despair in his voice, as if Klaus was singing about his death... He knew that he was already dying... AIDS was already killing him...
This is such an incredibly powerful and sad performance. Around this time, he had new management that separated him from the people that supported him from the beginning and had him, at his sickest, on a grueling schedule. They clearly wanted to wring every drop of performance they could get from him before he died.
I was more than once at the gates to death, had serious illnesses that put me in danger, I also played with my life when I was young because of PSOD, but was finally happy heaven didn't wanted me then! Klaus is one of my favorite singers since youth, and anytime I see this show, and hear his stunning voice, I feel ice flowers growing on my skin, and my blood starts to freeze, a harsh coldness is owerwhelming me! This is so emotional, and thrilling, it's as I die everytime a little with him! One of the best operas, it has songs that you love or hate, and the sad beauty of Klaus Nomi makes him reminded, remembered and finally shows the depth of his mind...i hope I'll live long now, my daughter needs me though, and my beloved wife anyway don't allow me to meet the angels, I agree, I have time, no hurry, and I enjoy all about life😌🙂😔🎶🎵💎🎻🎸🎹
Everything about this performance is perfect. - I was wondering if anyone knows the dates, location, and event where this performance was given? - I have scanned the comments and cannot find any information on when and where this took place. If I have overlooked something, please forgive me. If anyone knows the answer(s) to my inquiry, it would be great to know. - Peace.
Klaus was so before his time. We lost so many wonderful talent to AIDS. What this man might have done with his career and for us all had he lived. May he rest in peace!
Right on the final "death" line, his look starts like he's detached from the performance, introspective. Halfway in, his eyes fleet, glancing, back to performing. There's something in that moment, its tender, pure, mournful.
I have posted here before, but can't watch this video without further sharing of thoughts. This man was so incredible, even on the tinny, ill-suited video technology available and used to record him. This man was a master of voice, this man stood and looked out to us with mysterious demeanor. I wish I could have seen and heard this man. My extreme, sorrowful loss.
This has to be the finest argument for the acceptance of gay people for what they are--simply human beings, here for a short time, wanting all of the same things. This performance makes me cry every time because of its power and dignity, he won indeed, he beat it all, the forces holding him back, encroaching death, the gay bashers, all of it. This is a man refuting the "dying of the light," rising (cue irony) to have his final moment of achievement, he had arrived. How bittersweet.
I just found out about Klaus Nomi, and i wished i did not for i feel a great hole in my heart for knowing the world had someone like this only to lose him way before he was finished with his work. I am so so sad now.....
What a great genius he was. I can see Johnny Depp in the movie version. Someday he will be recognized as the icon of the era. Lady Gaga, eat your heart out.

One of the best operas, it has songs that you love or hate, and the sad beauty of Klaus Nomi makes him reminded, remembered and finally shows the depth of his mind...i hope I'll live long now, my daughter needs me though, and my beloved wife anyway don't allow me to meet the angels, I agree, I have time, no hurry, and I enjoy all about life😌🙂😔🎶🎵💎🎻🎸🎹
Una obra de arte!!bellisimo
It,s amazing the man got through the performance and my God the man had fantastic range , he will be missed .
- Peace.

+Christos Kavousanos thank you so much to post that
Let’s remember that hundreds of thousands of people still die each year from AIDS related illness. Klaus was one of the first..sadly not the last.
Thank you for the video 💖
Une pensée pour Klaus Nomi, une voix unique 😇🕯️
4:01 I love how his voice lowers and ends triumphant.
My extreme, sorrowful loss.
si o hubiese fallecido creo que hubiera sido el freddie mercury del pop que gran voz tenia, lastima que lo disfrutamos poco
i don't know what to say.. this will and already has affected me.. forever
Still astonishing, wonderful and heartbreaking
Nomi. The man, the legend.
Klaus Nomi - the sad clown from space Opera! Amazing!! Unforgettable!!!
Simply amazing, you "freeze" to watch him perform....
His performance was brilliant, and yet he was quite sick at this time. Not shortly after this appearance, he left us here to freeze to death.
The Artist 🌿
In all its spendor 🖤
This has to be the finest argument for the acceptance of gay people for what they are--simply human beings, here for a short time, wanting all of the same things. This performance makes me cry every time because of its power and dignity, he won indeed, he beat it all, the forces holding him back, encroaching death, the gay bashers, all of it.
This is a man refuting the "dying of the light," rising (cue irony) to have his final moment of achievement, he had arrived. How bittersweet.
This is so powerful. 100 % perfection. He did now that he will die very soon and still give all of his soul anyway.
How could anyone say negative?
I have listened to many different people sing this, they are all second tear to this performance.
53 people have no musical taste.... how could they dislike this?
