I like Monster Clay because it takes me months to finish a project and it's not sticky, so you can rinse any dust off under the faucet.

How about bread doh? I'm serious. People make really intricate sculptures with it for harvest festivals. I think I got too into your video melting Plasticine in saucepans. Now I'm treating you like a cookery show! 😂

Hi, Andrew!! In Russia, monster clay is very popular, almost all professional sculptors use it. But NSP chavant is not very popular, they say it is not convenient at all, but I like both clays.

This looks very cool! I'd like to see you try using other forms of clay and rank them depending on their different perks and disadvantages? Also could you try to sculpt different things like animals? I wanna know the general thought process behind making an armature since it would be applicable to almost any living thing

Thank you for your perspective. I've only just begun sculpting and I'm using Monster Clay Hard. I might try Medium next.

@@AndrewJosephKeith - I like it, but it gets annoying that I have to heat it upin a makeshift hotbox to work with it. It does hold details very nicely though, which is also why I chose that hardness, but it's difficult to make changes without heating the whole sculpture after it cools down - unless you get a hot air gun, which I'm considering.

Thank you for this video, finally someone who really focuses on the actual sculpting with that clay 😁
I generally use Chavant Clayette because it's much less sticky than the NSP, but unfortunately even Clayette Hard is still relatively soft. So I'm looking for alternatives. I'm happy to hear that Monster Clay doesn't stick because that's something I absolutely hated about the NSP.
Also, I live in Europe and I can purchase Monster Clay locally while the Clayette I always have to order from abroad which is annoying.
So I'll definitely give Monster Clay a try, I'll probably start with the Hard variant and if it turns out to be too Hard, I'd mix it with Monster Clay Medium. At least that's the plan.
    Thanks again.

Sounds good! from what I've heard the monster clay hard is not that hard. Not nearly as hard as the chavant nsp hard.

@@AndrewJosephKeith I just found out that it's possible to order small samples of the 3 types of Monster Clay as well as the Alien Clay. So I did, they should arrive in a few days. I'll let you know ;)

@@AndrewJosephKeith Just wanted to pop in here. Long time MC user, a couple of points mentioned to me by the creator of MC on their super helpful FB group:
      1. Within the last 4-5 years they had to reformulate the whole line for ingredient availability reasons. Slightly less dense, slightly softer. My old brown/premium (now brown/med) is just harder when cool. Shines up more too. Maybe more carnauba wax in there? Who knows.
      2. Kind of a big surprise to me…The colors offered now are actually not equal across the colors in terms of firm-ness! So gray is the softest, brown is middle ground, and the green is the most rigid. I was given this info when contemplating why my new Gray Hard wasn’t much different from Brown Medium. Creator of the product chimed in. They’re apparently pretty damned close in firmness.
Lots of folks rightfully so mentioned that info should be on the website 😔
I can say the green/hard is really close to NSP hard. Holds heat a lot longer than Chavant, but no stickiness. I let two equal balls chill in room temp of about 74° all day, picked both up and tried to smash them with my fingers, the chavant collapsed a bit easier. Just slightly so. So I’d give it a shot! It’s still got the MC sag when heating large sections. Saga earlier than chavant, but, it’s worth the trade off for me, I really get frustrated with warm tooling and how sticky chavant is.

@@AndrewJosephKeith So I just tested Monster Clay Hard and Chavant Alien Medium against the old Chavant NSP Medium and my favorite Chavant Clayette Hard.
Monster Clay Hard is very, very smooth, I really liked that, BUT it also softens extremely quickly, so much so that I'm worried what the heat from a standard desk lamp that I use could do to the clay as I'm sculpting. The Chavant clays soften at much higher temperatures. I definitely need to investigate this more.
First impressions of the Chavant Alien Clay are not great. First, the clay seems to soften extremely unevenly. I just put the standard small "brick" that I got as a testing sample under a UV lamp that I normally use for softening my clay, and rather soon one side of the brick was almost melting, it was shiny and very soft and sticking to my fingers while the bottom side was still completely hard and cold. When the Alien Clay is just warm but not shiny yet, it feels very dry and almost sand-like and when I try to smear/spread it with a wooden tool or my finger, it leaves cracks and tears behind in the clay. I'd say this is really bad.

Great information! I have always used J-Mac. I'm wondering if you have compared J-Mac to your clay. Another question, I have watched your info about making an armature, but I missed how do you secure it to the board?

I have monster clay grey hard and It’s softer than my Chavant NSP medium. I just ordered some alien clay to try from chavant (now owned by smooth on) and it is supposed to be harder than monster clay but similar to it. I can let you know how that goes if you’re interested.

What is the best air dry clay for sculpting? I wanna do similar sculptures but im not familiar w what to use. What is the brown clay you usually use?

    • @AndrewJosephKeith
      @AndrewJosephKeith  7 місяців тому +1

the brown clay is non-drying modeling clay for mold making. Polymer clay might be worth a try. you can bake it in a normal oven. I haven't tried many air drying clays though Maybe I'll test them out sometime.

Hi @AndrewJosephKeith , Thank you so much for sharing your amazing art and explaining your techniques! While I understand your audience might typically prefer more muscular physiques, I wanted to suggest exploring the fascinating postures of Butoh dance. Artists like Atsushi Takenouchi create incredibly expressive movement through their bodies.
Here's an interesting link to one of Takenouchi's performances:
