Knifemaking: Kitchen Knife Made With Scrap High Carbon Steel
Вставка

- Making a fine cutting tool out of cheap materials and scrap pieces, using many of my homemade tools and jigs and various vintage equipment I restored in videos during my years on UA-cam!
I forgot to measure the end product on camera so here are the specs:
The blade ended up 145mm long and 45mm at the widest. Overall lentght 255mm, thickness tapered from 3.5mm to zero. Steel is 1070 (aka C70) high carbon steel, differentially heat treated with edge hardness between 50 and 55 Rockwell.
Handle is made of tabilized okumè and olive burl wood, with red (and a line of grey) felt liners, fixed to the tang just by friction in a japanese traditional way with split dowel.
Here are some of the videos where I go in more details about some of the tecniques used in this video:

Hey!!! If you want to know more about any particular process shown in this video be sure to check description, I always write a very detailed list of operations and product used. Also links to related videos that cover specific topics like making felt liners or stabilize wood!
And if you like what I do consider supporting me so I can keep on making, join as channel member or check my Patreon for early access and voice-over edit of my videos. Thank you!
nice to see your hammer holding improved, i'd suggest a slightly heavier hammer and a slightly looser grip so your hand lasts longer than till the age of 45
Can you make a old Western knife
Excellent 👏👌😍❤️

Hi this Chanel and video is wery cool! Why dont you try puting some music on backround?
I initially thought that you were one of those channels that artificially age and rust stuff just so you could have a restoration project, but seeing how you have actual forging skill, it seems I was wrong. Your work is legit.
Its been 45 years since I did any blacksmithing and its still a pleasure to watch an artisan at work...kudos to you black bear
From trash to treasure !
You can't hide quality Workmanship !!!!
First time I see the half dowel trick to hold the tang in the handle! It's neat!
One of the coolest parts of this channel is watching you use tools you made or restored in earlier episodes to make and restore new things. :-)
Thanks!!! Glad you notice!
Agreed
la cura che metti nei tuoi filmato è la stessa cura che emerge dal tuo lavoro finale.
Bravo: questa è arte del lavoro.
Elegantly made knife. I liked seeing all of the specialized tools he has to work with.
Hi, I am writing through Google a translator from Russian. Please add a spring of small force to the upper stem so that it pulls down. When you hit with a hammer, the rod will not bounce up. You will be comfortable.
I can literally watch his videos all day! I'm a novice knife maker and he gives me TONS of ideas and shortcuts.
Wow, watching you is like watching my Grandfather at his forge when I was a lad in the 1950s. Great job!
that is a fantastic movie, watched it from the beggining to the end :) recycle knifemaking is the best :)
What?! Thank you so much Trollsky!!! Earlier today I watched your hammer video while exporting. Great looking film and awesome work! Long time viewer here :) thanks a lot man, very much appreciated.
@@BlackBeardProjects thanks a lot man ! we should do something together since I am back on youtube :)
So, that's how it works. More efficient than cutting the metal. Wise man.
Amazing project. I think I get more satisfaction from using the scrap than from any other knife builds.
I am very new to knife making. Watching this has been absolutely inspirational to me.
Thank you ! not only for the great videos but also for always writing a very detailed description.😃😃😃
The hamon came out very beautiful.the forced patina is a cool look also.
Good job my friend 👌👌 I always enjoy your videos and your huge and broad variety of super skills 👌 best regards Martin
Awesome Restorations Love watching your videos too!
Nice knife. :)
That out of then way, I stand (Well, sit...) in silent awe of your skills, from forging to handle making.
Allow me to pay you my highest compliment, *I wish I could do that!*
Looking forward to more.
Love the knife great project, Your tomato looks weird man 🤣
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beefsteak_tomato
it is called Buffalo Heart tomato, very juicy ;P
Looks like a pumpkin
heirloom tomatoes are way yummier than your regular cheapo beefsteak tomatoes.
but never put it in the fridge, cuse even 10 mins in the fridge causes tomatoes to rapidly lose their volatile compounds responsible for their flavor, making them bland and gross.
@@BothHands1 oh I see, thanks for the explanation. I just never see one like this before.
Not only are you knives awesome, Your videos and editing are brilliant. MOST of all, The process explanations in your description.. Well done mate. da un amico in Australia.
I didn't expect the hamon to like that👍
I don't get a lot of the process that went into this, but the results can't be argued with. That came out damn near perfect.
I love watching you slice through the paper with the finished knife. 😍
I love the 2 tone liner you used this time. That rich red and grey worked really well! Also for someone that keeps saying he's not a chef your knife skill on those tomatoes is looking pretty good ;)
Ahah!! Thanks a lot brother!
Make the knife shine and don't make it dull like that.. your follower from Saudi Arabia 🇸🇦
love the differential hardening in the quench :)
This is the most beautiful knife I’ve seen in a while
Nice work black !!! Love your blacksmith vid
I must say your forge work looks quite impressive
Your fast forward smithing sound like a nice best.
Very nice video! Thank you!
Been a subscriber for quite some time and I just happened upon this video. Your artistic talents were intact for quite some time. Love all you've created and restored. Nice to look into the past. Appreciate your skills and as always, thank you for posting this video. 👍👍👍
Dnt want the video to end!
and this is the best answer for "why HANDMADE is so expensive?" for me atleast!
I like that you forged the bevel instead of grinding it all the way.
That scrap of metal never knew it could ever be something so beautiful!
Real engineering. Very nice work.keep on.
That was fantastic to watch. I loved the way you fit that tang with the dowel. I might have to try that some day.
Beautiful knife.
I mean this as a compliment, but when I watch a video like this, it breaks my heart, because I know I'll never be able to be a knife maker like yourself.
I think Black Smiths are metal artists. I'd never imagine to make a knife from rubish. 💯
Very nice. Drop the point more and you'd have my idea of the perfect kitchen knife.
Tout simplement sublime, bravo
Good knife right to the point
Wow from that piece of junk to a beautiful kitchen knife and I love the hilt very good work definitely deserves a like, wish I could do stuff like that, nice.
Mans vegetable slicing skills have been improving with every video

Muy bonito y el acabado rústico lo hace ver mejor diez puntos!

Браво МАЭСТРО!
Un altro bellissimo progetto, sai dare valore a tutto, sei un mostro di bravura, nulla da aggiungere, adoro questi progetti
Beautiful Knife BBP!!! excellent craftsmanship.
Simply superb
Sweet looking little blade
Really Nice 👍
Great work!
After spending most of my life working in kitchen, a knife that had ANY blacking on the blade would be thrown to the dish-pit to be gotten clean. Public Health would be on any restaurant until it was "back" to the shine of stainless steel so it doesn't look like food poisoning waiting to happen.
( there is a reason for stainless steel knives )
The notch in the blade just gives me a twitch about how this blade was badly damaged and not properly repaired.
The shifting of the tang from flat with the back of the blade removes many of the most common cutting techniques from the table. The leverage from the back of the blade alignment truly speeds up a lot of cutting tasks ( which is also why most chef's knives have a curved cutting edge ).
As a knife for display, great, looks fantastic.
Love these videos
Respect from Egypt Man
Arma letal, como dejo al tomate,un cuchillo divino de la muerte,un saludo y por supuesto un gran like desde Narón,Galicia (España)
Nice knife. Thanks for the descriptions of your steps and the products used. I was totally lost on most of the detail when I watched the first time.
My only question: Just curious, but why didn't you remove the black surface from the top of the knife?
The split dowel is a good trick
Great build! Thanks for sharing, Black Beard! Wood there looks awesome.

Good work.
pretty good hunting knife as well - well done!
Nice job!
Beautiful work!
Sick knife
Хорошая работа, дело мастера боится.
Nice video. Knife look beautiful with that hamon line running.
Nice job
Good work. Fugly blade
That’s some pretty aggressive grinding after tempering, and the magnet doesn’t let you feel how hot the blade is getting. You are very experienced, but I wouldn’t recommend a new maker doing this 👍. Beautiful work as always though Mr. Beard 👊👌
Yeah I never really understand why people grind after hardening. I know big knives can warp but thats not a problem with small blades.
Warwick Tetlow a lot of guys grind post heat treatment (post temper) on thin stock, for chefs knives for example. Here he’s just cleaning up the bevels, as he did grind pre-heat-treat. I was just concerned because the video seemed like there was no dunking the blade in water during those cleanup passes. Anyway like I said, he’s very experienced, but for new guys watching, do a couple of passes and dunk the blade in water so not to ruin your temper👍
Thanks mate! I keep the blade cool with water, hard to tell with fast forward and edit, but every couple passes I stick that in water to cool. I always grind post heat treatment, it's too risky to quench a thin blade or edge, I had thin edges warp on me before very badly. As long as you don't overheat and change the color of steel you can grind as much as you want as far as I know! Thank you again
@@BlackBeardProjects Good advice. Thanks Mr BB.
