- Funk legend Steve Arrington tells the story behind his latest album project "Way Out (80 -84)".

Steve Arrington, 80s hit maker and former front man of funk legends Slave, is back after a 20+ year hiatus from the music business. His collaborations with Snoop Dogg and Dam Funk from 2013, and brand new self-produced material throughout 2014, show that Steve's still got the funk in super human quantities (as they say in Dayton OH, home town of Arrington, Slave, Zapp, The Ohio Players etc etc etc - "there must be something in the water").
Sep 2014 saw the release of "Way Out (80-84)" a retrospective encompassing all of Arrington’s classics-his first solo single, the Slave backed “Summetime Lovin’” / ”Special Effects from Mars,” much sampled hits like “Way Out" and “Weak at the Knees” from his early solo albums (just check the credits on tracks by A Tribe Called Quest, Jay-Z, Mariah Carey, Pitbull, etc), unreleased songs deemed too progressive by Atlantic Records at the time and five previously unfinished tracks featuring the classic Hall of Fame line up with brand new vocals and finishing touches from his current band.
“At 58, to look back on where I was at 24 or 25 years old, and add where I’m coming from now in finishing those tracks, it was like visiting my younger self,” Arrington says. “To that young cat, it’s like telling him, ‘I’m digging your uniqueness then,’ and to where I am now, telling the older Steve Arrington, ‘Hey man, you’re still doing your thing.’”
Steve: a master of our generation, we thank you !

Yes "way out" is so out of the stratosphere. Extraterrestrial! Loved it than and still blasting it to this day. To think that the members of slave were teenagers when they first came out is mind blowing in itself. Glad To see Steve is back because I sure did miss this great talent!
This was a skating rink hit! Love it and thank you Steve for great music!

I was just a kid during that era. 10 years old and under. These songs were merely background music to my childhood, but I remember them. As an adult, I now listen to songs like Way Out, Weak At The Knees, Nobody Can Be You, etc. with such joy. I have such reverence for the music of that era. Thank you to the hip hop producers who sampled a lot of the music from the 70's and early 80's which opened my ears to the classics. Thank you all.
🤜🏾💥🤛🏾
He's an icon of Funk music!
These are the Great musicians were missing todays.🎼🎹
It took me years and years to discover the real greatness of the Band Slave.... I live in Germany ... and back in the very very funky happy days 1979 to 1983 there were so many great bands, but you didn't hear all of them them on the radio and find records.... for years an years Slave was associated with Just a Touch... but there are so many other great songs.. my favorite is "I'd like to get"... and there are some great remixes out there by Dave Lee & Co... Thanks to Steve Arrington & Co
Please Re-release them ALL we need them right now 🤴🏿🤴🏿🤴🏿🤴🏿🤴🏿🔥☄️

Thanks a lot STEVE A. for letting you fans know you're doing well, people have been wondering about you the rest of the band and how things have been keep the funk grooving we still enjoy your ol' skool jams, but please reassure the fans that SLAVE was an established group before you joined your touch was the icing on the cake ( so to speak ) that made the band funkier. The way you and the late great MR. MARK jammed on the songs y'all did were outstanding, thanks again for sharing your talent with us to enjoy all these years ie: JUST FREAK, JUST A TOUCH ( A LITTLE BIT ) STONE JAM, and SHOWTIME 👍💯 🎼 🎵 🎶 🎤 🎧 🎻 🎷🎺 🎸🎹

Steve A. Your best song ever written to this day to me. Had no radio play. Absolutely brilliant lyrics, meaningful truth , should be a Gospel song. Was "True Love" and indeed " Brown Baby Boy"...If your a true Fan... Look it up and sit back Enjoy...You had an out er body experience when singing those 2 songs... Wow
Wow! The momories😊💝. I was 8 yrs old when this song came out , so I had no idea who sung it. I just know that my older sister (Mechelle 15 @ the time) & my whole city used to listen to SA's music. If he walked up to me I wouldn't have a clue , BUT I could tell you EVERY song 😂
I guess when I was 8 yrs old I felt like "god gave us this music". NOW, @ 44 I know that "God gave us this music"...😂💝🎆🌹. Love you brotha Steve. The whole city of Philadelphia does😊

Funk Master!
Im Proud of You! This interview lets people know
You Still Can Put da Heat On Em!!!
This was my stress reduction jam, actually as a young doctor in training, after coming off of being on call, doing a prolonged hospital duty, after I reached my apartment, with the volume turned up. Thanks so very much Mr. Arrington for the unlimited joy. I'm definitely a scientist, but one of my first passions was instrumental music playing the alto, tenor and baritone sax. As per the O'Jays song: I so very much love and crave music!
You have a sound of your own Steve special sound
Another awesome interview ....I love Steve's voice... I just watched the Red Bull interview ..yes!! It's 5:19am on Feb 24 2019 in raining NYC..
ITS SO DAM TIGHT
I just ordered hall of fame I. Pic'n it up Wed. Stay at it Mr.Arrington. You & Prince are the funniest "thang" since James Brown. I'm 49, from the east side of South Los Angeles (98) now residing in AZ, the young cats out here dig it when bump ,what they call OLD SCHOOL music while I'm polishing my whip at the car wash. Keep it moving Steve , " Nobody can be you but you home!"
I hope you remastered these using the best digital possible over to archival optic media such as M Disk and to one other archival media. Magnetic tapes such as this master tape, - due to the Earth’s natural magnetism - are in continual, constant degradation. I used to listen to Slave and Steve Arrington as a teen in the early 80s and then also in the early 2000s while making prints in my home darkroom.
Wow Steve, Reminds me of the good old days when you guys would go to New York and come back with some fresh new ideas
Then myself, Dodge (Roger) and Jody(Robin's brother) (Roger dodger's wife) would sit around, drink listening to Y'all new stuff before it even hit the streets.. and playing Rogers little practice drum set..Lol.
Good to see you on UA-cam my brother... UA-cam rocks
man the horns coming in is classic god damm!!!!
Fantastic
My imaginary husband threw down on this track. Kept it on REPEAT!! Still jammin' it today. Love Love me some Steve Arrington :)

He's a once in a time voice.
💖💞💗🙏🏾🙏🏽🙏🏿🙏🏼Hey Steve, it's Jeannie reach out for only positivity. I only have the best of memories. You were the best Father and Grandfather. It is funny can you believe? It is nice to know there are truly Angel's on Earth and you are one. Remember Dodger's Stadium and the Jackson's Destiny Tour Concert. Well anyway I hope your life is Grand, lovely, Healthy, GODLY, Blessed and Highly Favored by the Lord Jesus Christ. You deserve the best. Much Love, Jeannie🙏🏼🙏🏿🙏🏽🙏🏾💗💞💖
Your art goes with yourself... you grow with your art and your art helps you to grow in return...but you know that It's not over ... how can you stop that concept until a certain point?
Unbelievable that he is 60
I love this guy. When he was young he was really sexy (03:47"). Time passes and what remains is what you have inside. Today, Steve is still a good looking and adorable guy.
