Thanks for sharing man. There’s a plastic washer that seals the screws. Every time you change the gear oil, those seals need to be replaced also. That prevents water from going in to the lower unit.
Leo Santos thanks for the tip there. I think next time I do my oil I’ll be sure to have all the extra parts in hand ahead of time. I didn’t know about changing the seals each time.
@JHooverBrewer thanks for your reply. I did some research, and Quicksilver has an additive for corrosion resistance is the only difference I'm guessing from the Lucas Oil
How do you know I’d the amount you lose while putting the lower seal is too much? Can you remove and top off the upper seal after the bottom seal is installed?
@@sallystuart3454 I’d honestly change my upper and lower oils before the start of boat season, so once a year. Gotta start the season fresh and worry free and then don’t worry about it in the “off season” while it’s minimal use and/or not being used. It’s cheap insurance.
The way I was taught and understand it, the top hole acts as an air vent so you can pump the oil in. If the top is plugged, the oil won’t pump in. If the bottom is plugged and you pump in from the top, I don’t think you’ll be able to fill it fully.
Just so you guys know. MERCURY MARINE.. makes a threaded nipple that fits into the clear tube from the gear oil and threads into the bottom plug.. life is easier with it.

thanks for this tip, I just did this and because of your suggestion, had the correct washers!
Is that 80W-90 gear oil same as OEM gear case lower unit oil.? Thanks.
Not sure, sorry.

Use aluminum crash washer every oil change no leaks.
How often should the gear oil be changed? I bought my 15 hp mercury three years ago. I’ve used it may be 20 hours total.

The top isnt the fill hole ? Like a rear end?

@@JHooverBrewer Gotcha yea i watched a mercury video and they pump from bottom as well haha kinda dumb but not to hard
How much oil did you have to use? My manual says 370ml. It took about 700 before dripping out the top. And yes…. Fill from the bottom.
I can’t remember, I just filled till it spilled out from the top hole as well.

That’s amazing input, thank you!
Wouldn’t you lose more oil by unscrewing the tap?
Man. it seems funny none of the videos actually shows the removal of the lower gear case screw's !
Put nut in top first that closed off air won’t drain that way
