All I can say, thank you for this guys, I purchased both the mastering dax and the definitive guide to dax book and all I can say, starting with these two resources is hard. Follow the advice from Adam and I can assure you you will have a much easier path on your Dax journey.

For a quick refresh of DAX knowledge Ruth/Curbal is great. She can explain DAX issues in 5-10 minutes videos. It took me nine years to understand DAX beyond the basics. It´s like TSQL functions or TSQL subqueries. We went from a nice meta data based query language in MDX to this more cumbersome version. The big mistake was to start with an Excel based function approach and then extend it in to a model without clear joins and filter conditions. It´s messy and takes time to learn.

Thank you so much for the introduction! I'm taking the Mastering DAX Video Course now and feel it's a huge asset. Especially after using Power BI for a while and having experience in other coding languages, I think it's absolutely super helpful to compare the conventions and caveats in perspective. Really appreciate it!

I'm pretty new to PBI but loving it thus far. What degree or classes would you recommend for those new to BI to build on their BI knowledge? All your videos have helped me so much and DAX is definitely an area I struggle in.

Start in Power Query and build the right data model, then you'll usually only need a few bits of basic DAX.....

Here's the thing with DAX - is it worth becoming really good at it if it is unintuitive etc, or is Tableau's equivalent a better use of time? I've learned some dogshit languages in my time (VBA perhaps being the worst), and I wished I just focused all my time learning 1. Python and 2.SQL.
I like PBI but I'm finding DAX quite unwieldy.

What is DAX even about, though? I don’t get it. Also, if you already know Python programming and pandas for ETL, what is the point of learning DAX? Honest questions, I actually am curious about that.

DAX is native to Power BI, Power Pivot and Analysis services.
What dax allows you to do (at least in my case) is to be able to bring over tons of data in thin tables (many rows, few columns) and be able to analyze it extensively by adding filters, measuring YoY performance, MTD, QTD you name it, all of this without having to do the work outside PBI.
Yes, you can do the exact same thing in Python, SQL, but DAX allows you to be more flexible once you bring over the data to your report.

Dax. Its so you can do inline queries inside PowerBI because the company you're working for doesn't actually trust you to work with real SQL.
