Well. I had the mystery coolant leak. OPENED VALVE COVER because I had a lot of smoke suddenly for a few days ( and my oil was quite 'cruddy'). Passenger side had a small clear bubble puddle in exact same location. I stressed but just cleaned my valve covers really good (brake cleaner and C air), and crosses my fingers. YES!! after couple starts it stopped blowing clouds. It now has the min white cloud. I think I'm just going to live with the small coolant leak.

Might want to check out some service bulletins regarding oil consumption issues - apparently there are revised versions of these valve covers if you’re having issues with that.
@@VanwithTim Ya I have those problems, they say to replace the driver side valve cover. I fixed the oil consumption problem by buying a osb module. It stays in the osb port.

While you are in there, always check the exhaust manifold bolts. They look like they are at about the point where the heads are due to break off. Usually starts happening by 100 k miles. That’s another job that you may be making a video of sometime. Known issue on these engines. My 08 express 6.0 lasted until135 k before it popped it’s first bolt head. Sometimes they will pop off and gradually you may notice what sounds like a lifter tick but it will be an exhaust leak at the broken bolts exhaust runner. Needless to say, they all get replaced and it’s a nasty job when they don’t want to come out of the head or break off flush with head. Overall though, I would rather do the repair on a van than a truck. Good luck! 😁
Unfortunately I’ve noticed two or three broken manifold bolts on mine. Dorman makes some clever manifold “clamp” I wouldn’t mind testing out in a future video.
Funny, I always assumed they would be broken inside the head and require head removal / drilling. Never occurred to me I might get lucky and have a piece sticking out to fit the bolt extractor to!
@@VanwithTim Look up South Main Auto channel on UA-cam. Eric shows how it’s possible to remove broken bolts without removing the head. Don’t use an extractor, welding a nut on the bolt is the best way. Eric also shows how to weld a nut onto the bolt even if it is flush or below the surface. It’s on a dodge truck but same process . I used the clamps on mine until I could do the repair. Problem there is you have to trim or cut your heat shields so may end up having to replace them, and you don’t want to run without those on a van. If you can weld or have a welder, you may be able to do it yourself. Otherwise, most of the Chevy mechanics I know try the weld method first before pulling the head. That doubles the cost at least. You don’t want to pull the heads unless absolutely necessary

Be a great time while in there to replace the vacuum tube... it is likely almost shot if it wasn't done recently.
Definitely! That rubber line tends to crumble after 15-25 years of exposure to the engine heat, then the van gets stuck on the default defrost / foot HVAC setting.

Ahh. Luckily all the gas V8’s in the 1996-2002 GM vans (4.3L, 5.0L, and 5.7L) are VERY close to identical. (The 4.3L is the 5.7L just with two cylinders “missing”)

So I got a question I got a 2005
Chevy express 2500 v8 0:40 4.8l engine , the car starts with a lot of white smoke - smells like burned oil , so I was hoping I could just do l what suggested in your video - here is the problem my car still uses spark plug wires and distributor cap and the valve cover looks completly different from the replacment that you show in the video , what should I do in this situation ? Thank you .
That’s really weird! Positive it’s the 4.8L and not the 4.3L V6? I was pretty sure all 4.8L had this same distributorless ignition system. Either way, you might want to change out the PCV valve to begin.
