A couple notes after watching the video
    1. Congrats on completing your highest mileage week! It's always a huge accomplishment when you achieve something like that, and you should be proud of yourself for sticking it through. As for feeling down about high mileage, I would say don't knock how you're feeling until the taper is in full force. Generally, you really can't know how it's going to affect you until you step down for the mileage. That being said, I'm recently coming off a 2:26 pb in the marathon, and when clicking on the people's strava profiles around me, I saw people training from anywhere mostly between 75-120 miles with even one person peaking at around 65 miles. Point is, peak mileage depends on the runner and their lifestyle, and lots of mileages can work depending on the runner.
    2. What you were saying at the end about balance in life with running really resonated with me, and I'm only a 28 year old engineer with a partner of 4 years and no children. Balancing it all can be tough, and I think it's important to find that balance where your entire life does not revolve around running and damage others around you. A few good pieces of advice I'd offer is to a) be upfront with your partner about your training/expected total time per week/etc. before the training block occurs, this is so that you both can discuss it and see if any changes should be made b) race less, I generally only race 1 goal marathon a year, which includes around 12-14 weeks of training with ~6 weeks at 100 miles/~11 hrs a week. For the rest of the year, I mostly just do ~6-7hrs of running with a workout here and there, occasionally entering in local races for fun. I used to race more a few years back, but found that I can manage everything better when I'm only in training mode for a quarter of the year. c) as you said as a future possibility, cut mileage but increase the intensity/amount of workouts.
    3. Possibly consider joining a local running club! I noticed that all the runs in your vlog were alone, and I think that can just make high mileage all the harder. Running with others honestly brings me so much joy and is also helpful with keeping me honest for paces during workouts, I run with others well over half of the week while training. Might be hard now since you're in a time crunch but something to consider for future training.
    4. As for strength, I think I've commented this in the past, but I've found that it makes it harder for me to get quality work in, so I mostly just stick to ~15-20 minutes of range of motion/core work 5 days a week and dynamic stretching before/after workouts and most runs

Fellow husband/dad here. I find it hard most weeks to fit in 40-50 miles so huge kudos to you for working so hard to make this training block work. I relate so hard to trying to make it back in the time you told your wife you’d be home lol. Keep up the great work, best of luck in Carmel.

As a husband, father and shift worker I’ve found that 50-60 miles is plenty for me, my hard days and long runs are still the same as guys running 100 miles per week, I’m just running less easy miles, in saying that I’m getting my family into cycling so I can spend more time with them while also working in that low HR zone and improving my endurance.
People need to stop looking at miles and look at time, the elites running 100 mile weeks are doing this in the same time we take to run say 70, but they also have more time to recover, our focus needs to be more on recovery rather then big numbers.

I've done a training block of high mileage similar to this. After it was all said and done the benefit didn't out weigh how much I had to sacrifice family time, annoying my wife with being gone, social life and just generally always being tired. The 50-65 mpw is my sweet spot now and actually having a few more years of running under my belt and knowing how to attack workouts better I have better race results too. Pro's get paid to rest, we don't.

Eric, one thing you could look at is buying the new Garmin HRM Pro (white) monitor, as it has the functionality to give a more accurate pace and distance reading based on heart rate when running indoors.
I have tested it this winter, and I can confirm that running with the HRM Pro strap gave me a more accurate pace and total distance reading (closer to actual treadmill) compared to when I was running with just the watch and the built-in hr sensor!

Thank you for that last bit at the end about the conversation between you and your wife. The scene at 9:15 was also a scene straight out of an average morning when I go out for a run. As a newlywed I'm becoming more aware of the time commitment my training requires. My wife is very supportive but I also don't want to take advantage of her kindness. I started running to think and destress from a long day but then it evolved into PRs and goals which became its own kind of stress and long days which I still love but reminders like this help me to prioritize the things i want out of life.

I think strength and conditioning might be a tool for some people to get out of a bad injury cycle, however it's not essential for most people, as long as they're managing training load right and sleeping well. Kristian Blummenfelt and Gustav Iden are a good example of this, to prove the point

Love your videos. To each their own, but the arguments for strength training (if done correctly) is that helps recruit more fast twitch muscle fibers. Late in the marathon when you're slow twitch muscle fibers fatigue your body will try to recruit more fast-twitch muscle fibers to keep going. This may be easier to do if you have done strength training or plyometrics leading up to the marathon as it enhances your neuromuscular connection. We are definitely rooting for you to go under 250.

Travel full time for work, 15 days a month. Lots of hotel runs on treadmills, I am roughly around the same pace where my watch collects data and pacing correctly. What i have started doing is just removing the run that was auto transferred from strava and manually updating the mileage. The data is still stored in the garmin activity, so i can look at HR or anything that i truely want to know there and copy information within the notes on strava. Fellow newer dad here who lives on the road and understand the struggle stay hard! 3:15 PR 3 weeks after my kiddo was born last year, taking the spring racing season off trying for sub 3;05 in the fall!

This was really awesome and I can total relate although I’m not as experienced as you I’ve also been juggling family, work and training leading up to my first marathon in April… My personal journey and strategy has been cross training and has really required allot of personal sacrifices like starting days at 5am running in snow and rain all towards one goal. Thought I would share what I’ve learnt about myself my training and my outlook. It’s amazing how we learn as we go the things that are most important to us and how we adjust accordingly to find what works for us… this doesn’t make us weak but creates realistic balance and still requires allot of work but for me the greatest lesson is applying that same amount of work and passion to the other areas of my life like my family, work and people! Thanks for this video it’s a blessing to many others trying to balance life! More than running :) well at least for me. 🎉

    2. I am not a traditional runner.., I came from rugby. That being said, I enjoy strength training.., if you don’t like it, I am pretty sure you can get by w/o it. Now if you are falling short of some goals .., maybe change a few things up ..
    keep up the great work

Great to see that you've been smashing it. I would say that it seems like you are a bit on the edge of over doing it, and cutting back on a few of those 30 minute easy run double days and doing strength, mobility or just plain recovery will most likely have more benefit and not run such a high injury risk. The last thing you want to do at this stage is over do it and get injured.

Totally agree with the heartrate stuff at ~ 4 min. My apple watch ultra seems plenty accurate, especially given that I have tried Wahoo and Polar chest straps and they always seem to have at least one blip per run where the reading drops from 150 to like 120. That never happens on my watch and even if it is 1-2 beats wrong either way, it is better than 20 beat difference when the chest strap goes haywire.

I don’t think there is much research regarding resistance training and injury prevention for marathon running specifically. I believe much of the evidence is anecdotal. There is, however, research showing resistance training improving time trial performance in shorter distances, such as 3K to 5K. The mechanism seems to be resistance training improves muscle tendon stiffness, rate of force development, and running economy. It seems plausible that if resistance training can improve 3K to 5K performance, which is also a proxy for VO2 max, that resistance training could also improve marathon performance. I had mentioned in comments from a previous video, but it’s probably best initiate strength training between marathon builds during lower running volume so that it can be handled easier during a marathon build.

You haven't had major injuries, so it's hard for your brain to justify making time for it just for the sake of preventing injuries. Heart rate is obviously very important for you. So what if you told yourself, "Strength training will help me get stronger so my heart rate can stay lower at faster speeds."
