the reason the Ferndale wouldn't go into reverse was because you didn't have the brakes engaged, like in a real automatic

A basic game of MSC is driving calmly to Teimo's, trying to turn around and crashing into Jani, killing two pedestrians, flipping the Satsuma onto the roof on a invisible pixel, dying of thirst two times duribg the trip to get the Kekmet, somehow clipping the Kekmet into a tree causing a restart, then flipping the Satsuma the right way only to arrive at home and have your sausages spoiled.
To go into reverse in the Fernadle, you have to press down the brake pedal.

depress brake pedal to shift from park (and into reverse too)
dont floor it or youll lose control easily
