Best thing about your channel is like unlike other tech communicators who only live in the United States Bubble, you actually talk about other parts of the world. Not to mention the mini programs section which literally has everything from a stopwatch to a metronome. As far as Google goes, it could have bought whatsapp but again was late. If they bought whatsapp and integrated it with their google services like Google pay, drive and photos it could have been a wechat competitor of some sort..
3 Rules of Social Media: 1. Do not make knots. Don't force people to make an account for your thing if you're using a different thing. Example: Dont force people to make a google+ account in order to comment on youtube. 2. Do not be redundant. Be interesting, be something unique, not just facebook clone #55. 3. The user experience must be good. If it feels like the site is working against you, it's bad.
Google Duo is awesome too. The quality of the sound and the video is awesome, the design of the app is beautiful and it's actually pre-installed in every Android (7.0 and up) so, you can contact people more easily.
Google, just make a goddamn iMessages competitor, please. Basically RCS but with a Google servers, not carriers. We already know carrier sucks at technologies advancement. So, please...
It was once popular in Indonesia, but the server is abroad at its peak, causing message delays. By the time they build the server here, it's already too late. Realizing the market is shrinking, BlackBerry decided to sell BBM to Emtek, an Indonesian company. They added stickers, online shopping, online payment and stuff. Nevertheless, it's still failing, so they decided to shut it down completely this year.
I believe you forgot to mention that Google had the Social Media leadership with Orkut in it's peak. Orkut was a mark in Brazil's internet history, and I think that Orkut's impact could be better explored and why it lost the battle against Facebook in the 2010's.
This is pure speculation, but I don't think Google know how to hire product people. They have the best engineers but they need better product managers.
To be fair RCS feels like another TOOL/UTILITY product rather than a Social platform solution. And yes, nobody in India uses SMS for chatting. Only Bank, UPI and other financial messages get delivered via SMS and maybe some other official organizational messages. There was a time when mobile carriers used to sell SMS packs and bundles but unfortunately that was 10-15 years ago.
On iPhone, SMS is bolstered by seeing all recent messages in the notification and very underrated animations and sound in sending and receiving messages
I still remember when i had 9y/o and i had an account on G+, my acc was full of anime vocaloid, i didnt joined any grps cuz i didnt know that's there's groups there, but i really had fun with my friends from different countries, talking about anime and different topics, i miss these day, thanks to google for delete this beautiful social media :)
if rcs was made 10 years ago, it would have been the most dominant thing ever, literally whatsapp and the likes wouldn't even exist... i can imagine it, bein able text people right on my sms app without having to pay the unbelievable bills
It’s weird how the US and Australia treat SMS. In Australia SMS and iMessage is more seen as the proper messaging service. A lot of my friends have other messaging services but we often use SMS because it feels more personal. You don’t want a possible partner’s Facebook username or Line or Wechat IDs you want their phone number for your default messenger. In my experience.
WhatsApp actually uses your phone number to sign up. During the process, you add a name for yourself and (optionally) a photo. For others, you can choose what their name will be since it synchronises with your phone's contacts.
@@garritorious7587 Sure, but I was referring to the last bit in your comment about how you feel that SMS is more personal, because it uses people's phone number. Other messaging services can be just as personal. I'd argue that it can be even more personal, because you get to choose things like a custom name, photo etc. Not to mention how in countries where such services are the norm, phone numbers are not primarily used for phone calls or SMS.
I mean there's always *Facebook* it's almost a social requirement for most people under 60 to have a FB now if you have a huge "friend's list" but are only really friends with like 10% of them... then that's on you and perhaps you need to do a little 'spring cleaning'
Thank god they failed. I really don't want to send more of my data to Google. That company is so immature that they're actively blocking New Edge from accessing their services (meet, docs and drive).
They aren't actively blocking Edge from accessing services - it's been said they just have an "allow" list that they haven't updated yet. However, Google is notorious for crippling non-Chromium browsers like Firefox and Edge (to the point that Edge had to switch browser engines). At least Google doesn't have control over the entire internet, but it's insane how they're tricking people into thinking that Firefox and Edge are slow by crippling their speeds. I find it sad that they've forced Edge to surrender and become yet another Chromium browser thanks to these anti-competitive tricks.
But you would rather send your data to Facebook by using FB and WhatsApp. 😂😂 Bro, Google uses your data for making money, true, but they can be considered as a far lesser evil when you look at offenders like Facebook and Snap. Specially leakage of data, and data breaches and malpractices of securing confidential data. SMH
@Crim Sin Not as easy as that. The reason why Twitter and Facebook look immortal is that it is very hard to make people migrate. I think Google now believe UA-cam to be their social media platform.
Another example: Google Trips. It's a great app for backpackers and people who travel a lot. I have used it so much... And I have built all my trips, selected places, made my itineraries and history there. So much information about my trips, it's organized like a travel book (you know like when you collect maps and flyers... Google Trips is like a digital souvenir for me, saving information of places I've been to). Google announced it will be shut down in a month. Kind of annoying.
Google+ looked like it was designed to fail. My conclusion is that someone in management decided that Google needs a social media platform and people who make it didn't even try to make it work.
I agree even bigger issue was there were so many well thought and well made social media s. what they made could have worked if they were the only one lol
If you haven't, could you do a story behind on how github became such a massive success? (compared to other similar platforms like bit bucket, gitlab etc.)
RCS is a bad system BECAUSE it uses carriers. They COULD cost extra. If not as RCS, then at least if SMS/MMS fallback (which will be the case almost constantly due to incompetent carriers) is in use.
I just wish they'd not get rid of Hangouts. I use the app everyday SMS and everything else. All my messages sync across my computer, laptop, table, and phones.
I also have a suspicion this is in part deliberate if they have a successful social platform or even chat platform. The calls for them to be broken up as a monopoly would become even louder. And they’re already very loud.
Oh my god I remember how much I fell in love with Orkut just as it was its last few days, can't remember weather it was Google bought it and planned to put utilise it elsewhere like Picasa or something.. Oh and Buzz! 😂😂 I remember it, iGoogle? Anyone? Having your own cool custom Google page with backgrounds and widgets. See G+ was amazing at first, I tried getting all the lads to move over and have hangouts for our group chat instead of WhatsApp, since we all had Gmail and YT, we all had to change our numbers to avoid paying for WhatsApp but in the end, they didn't want it, they just didn't feel it and over the years G+ simply became a dumping ground for YT posts, explicit photos EVERYWHERE and trash in general, it's a shame, it seems they can never get it right.
I used iGoogle until the bitter end. A google search bar, my gmail inbox, a quick news feed, a weather synopsis, and a pleasant background that reacted to the time of day. iGoogle was my last homepage; when it shut down, I stopped using home pages entirely.
@@thegardenofeatin5965 I used to love it, I'd 'wow' my friends with it every time haha Of course home pages would never be the same. Shame they shut things down that are great, like recently inbox for gmail.
Orkut was gigant here in Brazil! It even had a cable tv program called "Orkut Live" where musicians and bands would do interviews and you could get emblems in the site.
I started using google messages on mobile in 2010. It could text other phones or other people's apps. Got rebranded as hangouts, but it has existed for a lot longer than 2013.
Can you make a video on how Facebook is able to rule over social media platform. Anyway I don't think chat can ever beat slack. Teams can but not chat.
I think it's annoying that you need to have 5 chat apps at a minimum on your phone just to communicate with all your contacts on their preferred app... I hope RCS can fix this.
This is the best tech information channel in youtube. And again - this was so interesting for me even thou I thought that I knew a lot about google. Well.. Not as much as I think I knew. Keep it up!!!!
Finally, someone dissected the problem. With that said, Hangouts was (once upon a time) an amazing messaging service that combined chat, text, voice, and video; then Google git rid of it, and the reason is really anyone's guess. Also, @1:16, you left out Google Voice.
They never had coding abilities. Its just government backed funds and buying already successful projects like UA-cam. Their social app attempts were riddled with exploits and lack of user friendly interface
I have never had issues with notifications but I know ppl who have. Otherwise it is pretty basic...looks like an app from 5 years ago. But I do think there are companies using it. My brothers whole company ...quite large ...uses g suite and Hangouts extensively. Leaves much to be desired tho.
@@2hedz77 Quite the contrary, I don't know of a chat product that is as advanced as hangouts. Let me explain. Where Hangouts really shines is integration. You have it in Gmail, so you don't need an extra window/application for chat. But more importantly it is integrated with calendar. Every event in your calendar automatically has a hangouts meeting. So there is no struggle, of who starts a video call, then invites everyone, etc. Every meeting automatically has one. It gets even better, because there is also meeting room hardware that lets you hook up TVs in meeting rooms to G-Suite. When you book a meeting room for a calendar event, the TV in that room is automatically aware of the hangouts call for that meeting, so you when you get to the meeting room you only need to click one button and you automatically have the correct video call running on that screen. No laptops required, but you can just use the link in the calendar to share your laptop screen into that meeting. I currently don't know of any competitor who has such features, especially if you are already using G-Suite anyway.
What makes me hesitant to RCS is that it may cost extra to message people in other countries, especially if it just reverts to SMS without letting me choose.
6:00 I can’t believe I cannot figure out what SMS is for a minute or two, until I realise it is an app on my phone that I never use other than logging in and receiving rubbish ad., should I be embarrassed lol.
Google is so social averse, they've even buried COMMENTS here. As a long time account holder, I actually consciously comment more nowadays to do my (tiny) part to keep comments alive here.
One thing I hated the most is the seamless integration of ads in the videos. While it's an art to do that in my opinion, it's just something I hated. I don't want to get into the ad for 3 minutes and then I finally realized it's ad and wasted 3 minutes to think about the ad.
I think the major problem with google is it uses gmail and nobody wants to be friends with people in your email list, it's mostly work related stuff and you don't wanna block them if you don't like to see their stupid posts.
To be honest I think this is a good thing. I would rather Google remained an engineering company focusing on tools, utilities, open-source, AI and general software development than to go down the path of social media platforms, which open up a whole new can of worms when it comes to ethics and responsibilities
Social Apps - _Facilitate the creation and sharing of information, ideas, career interests and other forms of expression..._ Google: _Umm! Did I hear privacy and personal data?_
Also there's the fact that most people see the Google social apps in their phones and assume it's useless preinstalled crapware instead of a legitimate service, so no one uses it even though everyone has it on their phones.

Their uniqueness was that you had a single "Google" profile across all their services. It was actually quite brilliant.
I actually liked G Plus, thought it looked nicer than Facebook.
Google Duo is awesome too. The quality of the sound and the video is awesome, the design of the app is beautiful and it's actually pre-installed in every Android (7.0 and up) so, you can contact people more easily.
Damn, that ending with confronting not being able to convey the ad convey the ad so nicely.
Old intro music plz.
Thanks for supporting for old music
And thanks for likes
The old music was iconic... TechAlter just won't be the same without it...
Big +1
Google+ just ended up having way too many trolls. That's what killed it for me.
I remember arguing some Lapidot shipper 2 or 3 years ago and she blocked me for no absolute reason lol, what a inbred cretin she was.
I remember this one guy named Antihaterfoxy, everyone hated him because he stole someone's art all the time lol
Google, just make a goddamn iMessages competitor, please.
Basically RCS but with a Google servers, not carriers. We already know carrier sucks at technologies advancement. So, please...
I want this too.
They have all the ingredients.
But they still make bullshit from the ingredients.
They tried with Allo which was p neat imo. But didn't add SMS support so it failed.
@@rph_redacted yeah, I'm kinda pissed off Allo was killed by Google.
@@rph_redacted Allo was awesome.
The problem came in people being pushed to the ecosystem.
Check out "Google Messages".
You didn't mention BBM on the messaging apps. It was pretty big back in the day, and it has been encrypted since long ago
Only big in south east asia mostly, and canada. Other parts of the world never even heard of it.
It was huge in Argentina, and latín América from 2008-2012
It was once popular in Indonesia, but the server is abroad at its peak, causing message delays.
I live in portugal and we majorly use whatsapp and messenger but we still use sms for some messages because we arent always online
You make some really high quality tech videos! Love them!!

Google meet: *laughs in covid19*
I believe you forgot to mention that Google had the Social Media leadership with Orkut in it's peak. Orkut was a mark in Brazil's internet history, and I think that Orkut's impact could be better explored and why it lost the battle against Facebook in the 2010's.
This is pure speculation, but I don't think Google know how to hire product people. They have the best engineers but they need better product managers.
Basically anyone who has imagination, google has knowledge but without imagination all that power is useless
It's scary how much just 4 ~ 6 companies dominate not just our technical lives but increasingly the public commons
True. SMS is extremely rarely used for communication. WhatsApp is king here and telegram is probably second place.
Unrelated but I’m still hurting from Reader suddenly being killed off.

> Talks about how google is not good with social media
> Forgot to mention orkut was the #1 social media in Brazil and India and is a Google Product.
Root as does most other messaging services but the reason for their number is still primarily to SMS or iMessage
Top notch video as always!
Pls revert back to the old intro music....the present one sucks.
Google meets is going pretty well in 2020! I would dare say they are the second best videoconferencing app after Zoom!
I miss Google+. It was one of the few social media platforms where you could actually make friends
Tsynami Definitely true, I made friends with an entire trolling community. Good times
I mean there's always *Facebook*
it's almost a social requirement for most people under 60 to have a FB now
if you have a huge "friend's list" but are only really friends with like 10% of them... then that's on you and perhaps you need to do a little 'spring cleaning'
Bro, Google uses your data for making money, true, but they can be considered as a far lesser evil when you look at offenders like Facebook and Snap. Specially leakage of data, and data breaches and malpractices of securing confidential data. SMH
@@dustojnikhummer Ok sorry I was wrong.

I still use rely on SMS for bank and network related communications. SMS is really useful while traveling. To receive OTP, SMS is still required.
Buy Twitter ASAP before it gets too expensive. Problem solved.
Orkut was my first and fav social media tho
mine too
Google+ looked like it was designed to fail.
GDPR is insane. The owner of the data, is the owner (or renter) of the SSD on which the aforementioned data lives.
SMS is popular in the U.S. because it works with 100% of phones. Each of those mentioned apps only work on
Orkut was massively popular in Brazil, it died a few years after Facebook launched.
It was the go to social network in India also, but then they launched new orkut look and tried to copy Facebook and from then orkut went downhill.
RCS is a bad system BECAUSE it uses carriers.
They COULD cost extra. If not as RCS, then at least if SMS/MMS fallback (which will be the case almost constantly due to incompetent carriers) is in use.
I just came here to say that your channel is amazing, the videos are beautifully edited and I love your content
Well i thought the hangout and Google + would be the oldest project among all the social platform
They did somewhat succeed with Hangouts. Alot of ppl use it for msging ppl on gmail and for face chatting.
We need a decentralized messaging app, on a p2p platform.
I just wish they'd not get rid of Hangouts. I use the app everyday SMS and everything else.
All my messages sync across my computer, laptop, table, and phones.
Hangouts is good, but I wish they didn't compress video when you send it.
@@moomin7461 I've honestly have never sent a video thought Hangouts. I usually upload to Google photos and send the link.
Wait you telling me that I can use RCS when my carrier balance is 0 and I dont have internet on my phone?
@Lumi a shit...
@@thegardenofeatin5965 I used to love it, I'd 'wow' my friends with it every time haha
Of course home pages would never be the same.
Shame they shut things down that are great, like recently inbox for gmail.
Truth is social media websites need to have a personality. Google doesn't have one. Which is good when it's a search engine but not for anything else.

Orkut could be the Facebook of this era but it died bcz of Google's own mistake
Orkut was gigant here in Brazil! It even had a cable tv program called "Orkut Live" where musicians and bands would do interviews and you could get emblems in the site.
That graphic at 1:21 is incorrect, Hangouts is still alive. Not many people use it anymore though due to the shutdown of Google+.

se eles tivessem lançado o google+ como um Orkut 2 no Brasil, e importado contatos e comunidades, já ia ser um incentivo grande pra muita gente aderir
Orkut was the main social network here in brazil before Facebook
I was really surprised when you sad it never was popular
@Super Cool me too :/

Hangouts is no failure, though. It is heavily used by businesses in combination with the general G-Suite. And it's awesome! :-)
Not everyone works in big company.
How is it for personal use?
@@kunkundalin Unreliable. Notifications on iPhone/Android don't always work.
Our friend group used google hangouts for the longest time, but everyone stopped using it once google announced that they will stop supporting it.

I just can't comprehend how a company like google could have failed so badly for so many times. It's almost as if they did it on purpose.
Also there's the fact that most people see the Google social apps in their phones and assume it's useless preinstalled crapware instead of a legitimate service, so no one uses it even though everyone has it on their phones.
