Dane, thank you for posting this video! My husband Kenneth Lewis, whose claim to fame is being the first to run Upper Cherry Creek, hence the name Lewis Slide or sometimes referred to as Lewis Leap. Ken was so excited to find this video. It was the first time he had ever seen a video of this section of water. Over the years he has shared the story of how this run came about but last night (because of watching this video) he explained to me the reason he was able to run Upper Cherry Creek was because he was in the process of demoing a new kayak for a guy that had developed the first plastic/hardbody kayak. Prior to that technology the fiber glass kayaks they were using would never have made it through that rock walled section. He has so many stories of his Kayaking days. I told him he needs to write these things down. He and his buddies actually did several first runs on various rivers and waterfalls. Thanks again!
Ann, if has any photos he should DEFINATELY put a book together. BtW, I'm a long time adventure junkie and professional writer/photographer... just in case he needs a ghostwriter:-) Thanks for the story.
@@atatterson6992 Awwww, just saw your post. I know we have some photos somewhere. One of my all time favorites is of my husband in his kayak totally vertical about three feet above some serious white water in the Grand Canyon. I will try and find them. He definitely has some great stories.
How does anyone know they was the first... Maybe someone ran it but didn't record it.. . Maybe the native American ran it in a dugout. I am asking cause I don't know how anyone can claim to be the first person to run any river
So glad Bren is getting to experience all this fun as that means double videos. Missing Adrian this summer though. Hope he is doing ok. Thanks for another awesome experience. Glad you show some of the not so perfect things as long as all is ok but just to remind us that this is hard. You all have just put in so much time to make this look easy when we know it isn't. Also thanks for letting us know how long these hikes are taking you. Just adds to the journey for us too.
Jeez that's epic. Definitely worth the walk through all the skunk cabbage, Queen Anne's lace, and assorted brush. Head back in another five million years and it will be a deep canyon. Parts of it already are getting there. Food is crunchy on the outside, juicy on the inside. Who cares what Gordon thinks. Yabba dabba doo! What an idyllic place to camp! I've heard of snow kayaking, but rock kayaking? That's just... No words. This video has to be one of the best of the year. There can't be more than a couple of handfuls of kayakers in the world who could pull this off as well as these guys. Simply amazing abilities on display.
2:30 Ugh, that was rough seeing Bren slide down that with his usual stoke, and amazing attitude. Dude, I am still utterly heartbroken over losing him, and I can't even begin to imagine how you feel since he was a close friend, while I never even had the privilege of getting to meet or paddle with him. Awesome video as always, but holy shit is it hard to watch footage with Bren... miss the dude so much already that I can't even put it into words. There has seriously not been a single day that has gone by since Bren's accident where I haven't thought of him, and hoped that the last 2 months were just some bad dream that I have yet to wake up from.
I seriously had to pause the video and walk away for a minute when I first saw Bren. The avalanche of emotions seeing him alive and well again after the past 2 months was almost too much for me... But we have to remember that if there is a heaven, he would be looking down on us right now and laughing at how broken up we are over losing him, and telling us all to not let it slow us down or discourage us from paddling, and to have a great time out there while doing it. Despite the fact that I never met him personally, I know he would be telling all of us to not curl up in a ball of depression, and to remember him and everything he did fondly, but to never let it slow us down, or stop us from taking that next step. And now I have tears streaming down my face despite everything positive I just wrote. I miss him so much man... so fucking much Edit: Only made it to 3:53 before I had to shut off the video. I can't watch this yet dude, just hearing him speak again, and how psyched and happy he was just to be there is just too much. I'll come back and give this video another try a few months down the line. I thought I would be able to handle seeing Bren again, but I'm not ready yet. This is the first time I've cried in 8 years... I just hope he knew the absolutely massive and wonderful impact he had on the sport, and I hope he knows that none of us will ever forget him for as long as we live.
@@tankmaster1018 I know just exactly what you mean. It's the same for me. I can't not watch these though. It's my way of remembering him, and not letting him completely die.
That hike from Bourland Meadow trailhead is my favorite way to dip into Cherry. I’d be stoked as hell to run into your crew in the backcountry. I bushwhacked those same bushes and camped where y’all crazy mofos put in. Cherry and West Cherry are the shiznit. My mind is blown that y’all fux with these waters.
In terms of California they can definitely get abused with all the slides and stuff but one thing that’s great about Cali is the rocks are super smooth
I've got a barn full of plastic kayaks where runs like these rubs all you bottom away, i cringe when i see ppl riding down dry walls w plastic yaks or go through too shallow runs.
That's a class VI for you, all white foam like a washing machine, they are so fun and dangerous, look how blue and oxygenated the water is, you could float on top with a vest on until you get to the pools.
You wasn't lying, that's one he k of a clean stream, no boulders hidden underwater, just smooth granite. They don't have those types out east, the main river i go is New River and gaully river, at the gorge. Both class V
Hello! I apologize to you right away, I don’t speak English well, so I can write with errors... I would like to know more about the kayak, what kind of kayak you use to go down such dangerous roads. Because I also want to get involved in this sport/hobby, I’m looking for a good kayak. I hope you understand me and can respond to my comment😅
Lol yeah I mentioned it, but hey I'm not a professional kayaker with sponsorships and endless kayaks, I just cringe like it's a cheese grater for the plastic bottoms, I've got dozens of worn out yaks in my barns from that shit, but I get it as long as you're trying tricks for UA-cam
People may be the first to get on video or cellphone. However there was a group of sportsmen and women in the 60s and 70 that ran rivers in super short canoes .. and the native American was here before that

The line at 3:28 was soooooo satisfying to watch. The way you held it over that slide was fantastic!

So Radical! Dane your the man and I greatly appreciate your efforts when it comes to putting out these videos. I'd be lost without them. Shakikiki 🤙
I always love to see Upper Cherry! It's one of my favorite rivers to watch!
Good to see Bren breaking his cherry on the Upper Cherry. Such a beautiful river and gorges. Dane thanks so much for sharing the experience
Im with Team River Runner, and I love watching these videos, spicy for me but some of the lads would enjoy.
Every time I see a video with Bren in it, it brings tears to my eyes. He will be missed by so many.

When I'm feeling energetic, I love hiking back up to do a breakfast lap of Cherry Bomb with an empty boat. So good!
What an absolute dream of granite and water. Any Kibbie Creek on this trip??
Dane - you must go through plenty of kayaks, sliding them down those dry rock slides. Ever worry about the bottoms getting too thin?
In terms of California they can definitely get abused with all the slides and stuff but one thing that’s great about Cali is the rocks are super smooth
sick video 🔥...what are the grips on the paddle? Batting tape?
It’s electrical tape. Other tapes like batting tape, hockey tape, feels nice when it’s dry but is super slippery when wet.
@danejacksonkayak ! that's super smart...I might try it, thank you.
How many times can you go down those granite rocks without making a hole in your kayak?
dane' s very strong💪
Exstream kayaking is one of the highest acheivements of mankind
Dang I wanted to see how you guys got the yellow kayak outta that suction cup
is that all granite or whats the story with the geology looks amazing
This was awesome!
Wow D, I love UPPER C. Flintstone was amazing? But that Tri Tip
Recommended drysuits for this cold water?
Even though the weather is hot, you spend so long on the water and the water is cold enough it's worth being safer and wearing one.
Thanks for the "Cherry Bomb" Killer.
Exquisite!!
so unbelievably awesome!
🙌
Beauty river. Beauty day!
What size gnarv do you paddle
I use the medium

Sick video
Appreciate it!
Its truly that fun for people who carry a sidearm all day. You have to be used to holding control all-the-time.
No knuckles were harmed during the making of this video
17:30 good spot if anyone needs their spine compressed
Surreal place.
WTF was that at 6:38 though?
It looks like a giant, free theme park.

Its nice to see Bren in this video. Rest in peace
Rivers scare the shite out of me
Great vid, only recommendation is to call the state Cal, rather than "Cali". You'll sound less Hipster :-)

Have you taken Bren down the green?
He’s run it a number of times but I haven’t been in it with him since 2012. He did the 2016 green race though.
So cool, I was just curious. I haven’t seen any footage yet. Thanks for responding!!!
