I was present at the event when a fierce storm swept over the mountain just as they were wrapping up. Throughout the entire festival, Billy, the artist-in-residence, was tirelessly giving his all, even darting between sets to collaborate with as many people as possible. It marked my inaugural experience witnessing both of these incredible performers, and in the time that has passed, I've had the pleasure of catching Billy's act at least six more times. Remarkably, with each performance, he manages to surpass his previous best, leaving me with the feeling that the sky is truly the limit for his talent.
Billy was just in the audience to watch and Tommy herd he was there and asked would he come up and play This wasn't organised a spare of moment thing and not even sure if they every crossed paths but Tommy new about Billy Very few people cam make acoustic guitar sound so good and you get two generations as good at it yeah Tommy always encouraging He travels around the world teaching people to play he loves it There's a interview going around on the tube with Tommy speaking about how fortunate he is gets to travel the world doing what he loves and teach people as well he just nice bloke Cheers mate
This is the first video I have seen that Billy didn't sing. I looked him up and he won the artist and song of the year in 2022 at the Bluegrass awards. He was born in Michigan and also won a grammy in 2021. Fantastic guitarist from what little I have seen of him. There are a couple of Austin City Limit performances available of him that are good.
I heard a story on a youtube post of a lady who went to a concert and at the end Tommy invited anyone to come jam after, her son put his hand up. He was a total beginner and Tommy smiled and gave him a lesson in the best way. He is a great guy and will not bring anyone down.
What? Dueling Banjo's? I want to see that Donna. Thank you, I am going to find it , I will try for tomorrow. Thank you as always, steering me in the right direction. Howdy from Missouri. Be well.
Obviously Tommy was just told 'Billy Strings wanted to come up and play...So this is totally unrehearsed....Jeff I'm glad you put your hat on tight...lol I am sitting here with the biggest grin on my face right now ....Wow what a performance from these two amazing artists. I'm still not sure how they did that....they seemed to be reading each others mind lol.... That was freaking awesome 🎸🎸🎸🎸
Great reaction. Two very good guitar players. Tommy had a brother named Phil. He passed away a few yrs ago. He was a great guitar player too. Of course Billy one of the greatest flat picker out there.
THANK YOU ❤ THANK YOU !!! the ultimate guitar picking jam full of joy. It's Thurs morning down here, early coffee and seeing you love these two, what a way to start my day. There is a lot of info about Billy online, and it's worth reading because it will give meaning to many of his original compositions. "Turmoil and Tinfoil" (pink glasses version) is a good place to start. I found him a few years back and was instantly hooked ❤
Got it . Thank you alimac. Means a lot to me. I am hooked. Evening here, and I am going to relax out on the deck and watch birds, have a great day . See you tomorrow.
Billy is from Michigan. Taught bluegrass by his stepdad at an early age. He's a true prodigy. He won a grammy and tours 200 days a year, selling out arenas everywhere. As a teen, he was in a metal band but returned to his bluegrass roots. But you'll see he inorporates rock elements into his performances. He's written over 60 songs. An amazing flatpicker and his band is equally as talented. Give a listen to Billy and his band, live, at Roots Factory playing "Turmoil and Tinfoil".
👏🙌🎶🎸I loved your reaction and yes they are both the best acoustic players on the planet. I've had the incredible pleasure seeing Tommy twice in a smaller auditorium and his one man 2 hour show is so good you can't believe it's over💯. This is one of my favorite videos and I never tire of watching and listening to it. So good and high energy. Billy grew up in a difficult family. Father died from drugs and mother was addicted. His small town in Michigan had hard times and there was lots of drugs and depression. Billy wrote this song I'm linking called Turmoil and Tinfoil about his younger life about 6 or 7 years ago. You will be amazed and get a better idea of his playing personality. ua-cam.com/video/fJmzS_Redh8/v-deo.html And this video has been viewed almost 6 million times so better late than never✌️ I am enjoying your journey of new discovery of great music and I agree with you about other greats like Stevie Ray and others would love these guys and respect the hell out of them. Really great musicians are very generous and it just all about the music. No games.
Coming back to add another link that I KNOW you will love. It is Billy Strings and Marcus King doing Summertime together. Just the two of them in a well known guitar shop. It has become my favorite version of the song. If you are not yet aware of Marcus King, you will be. He has his own solo career and a wide following. He is young like Billy and it gives us old ones comfort and joy to know great music is being carried on and the quality of musicianship is next level. So please add this to your list. ua-cam.com/video/1RNNQYpnukA/v-deo.html
Jeff, it is so astute of you to pick up on the seeming closeness and affection Tommy feels towards Billy in this clip and I believe it’s because Tommy found maybe the only person on the planet (in Billy) that he can jam with like he used to with his brother Phil. Playing with Billy must have been such a buzz for Tommy as it would have bought back so many memories. Phil passed away about five years ago and as they played together for many, many years since Tommy was 3 and Phil was six, I imagine Tommy has a big hole in his heart from Phil’s passing. Tommy used to play rhythm and Phil used to play lead. Meaning Billy and Tom, you said there’s probably only two people on the planet who can play like this but until five years ago, there was three. All three are country boys. What are the odds that two of them would come from the same family!? Please allow me to introduce you to Tommy AND Phil Emmanuel. 🙂 ua-cam.com/video/mrv24JD2RZc/v-deo.html …and another one just for fun. ua-cam.com/video/dlR2OmH9YY0/v-deo.html
If you want to try out some music you may have overlooked back in the day, check out the Scorpions performing "Still Loving You" live on Peters Popshow. They're a German rock band from the era of tight pants, lol. But the vocals of lead singer Klaus Meine will blow you away. The Scorpions is the best band I can think of to introduce people to 80s rock that may not necessarily have been drawn to it.
That is my background. Love the Scorps saw them many times in the 80'. 70s 80s is my forte. Kind of burned out after all this time of same music. Lead me here with you. Pretty cool. More NW ahead
Tommy used to play for Mr Farnham in his backing band for a period of time. Another Australian you may like is Stevie Wright with Evie ua-cam.com/video/lPveBD6WWXc/v-deo.html

You've stumbled onto a deep rabbit hole well worth diving into! Billy Strings (real name William Apostol) has been playing since the age of 3. He's not only an virtuoso guitar player, he also writes amazing music and lyrics, has an "old soul" voice and is a master performer. His touring band plays around 200 sold out shows per year with no 2 shows being the same. They have about 60 original songs and over 700 covers of everyone from Johnny Cash to Pink Floyd to choose from. Billy recently released a new collaboration with Willie Nelson called California Sober and the video is available on UA-cam. I think your next step down the rabbit hole should be the video that really started his momentum. It's just Billy and his guitar in somebody's basement playing for friends and it's incredible! Also the guy in the green shirt is hilarious. Here's a link to Dust in a Baggie ua-cam.com/video/VFEZOjtrwls/v-deo.html
