Eric Clapton and Chet Atkins both said that he is the greatest guitarist they ever saw, and Todd Rundgren stated, “The two best guitarists in the world are Tommy Emmanuel.”
One of Australia's greatest musicians and ambassador for Australia. Look for Tommy Emmanuel in the studio playing Classical Gas. The speed he starts off at is just amazing.
Not bad for a guy who has never had any formal music training, and does not read or write music - all natural ability - simply an amazing talent - as was his brother Phil RIP
@@Lnch4ALion Kevin is saying it is gifted talent rather than schooled talent. He and other siblings (there is a sister) were taught by their parents. Nothing "harsh" in the comment at all.
@@Lnch4ALion yes he has worked extensively hard, but he had such an ability from a young age for music, percussion and guitar - for someone who didn’t read or write music his hearing - amazing
He has the Clapping Sticks and Didgeridoo in there along with Sounds of nature, all mixed in with his Magical Guitar playing. Every time I have seen Tommy Live was in the Regional North outside, Bunbury Townsville, Kuranda, Darwin, Alice Springs twice, he played a lot in Regional Areas in his early years, just like all great Aussie Musos, they hit the Road and earn their stripes. Not going to say what the piece is because Tommy would tell you it is meant to mean whatever it makes you feel, not anything else, if anyone tells you different, stick with what you felt the first time you heard it, there is no right or wrong.
Tommy & his brother Phil (RIP) are legends in the guitar world. Tommy is a pioneer in new sounds from a guitar & other string instrument. Classical Gas would have to be one of my favourite pieces of Tommy's.
Thank you Rob for your spontaneous response to this performance, it's so long ago I can't remember it all, but your openness about it is refreshing.. May I suggest you look at the version from my "Center Stage" video, it's much better and had grown as a performance to a higher level, I hope! Thanks again, Tommy E cgp.
Hi Tommy, great that you have had a chance to watch. I think my interpretation was a bit off to the real meaning to the song but as I'm sure you know, music is so subjective to the listener. Simply incredible guitar playing and a pleasure to listen to. I will listen to that. ☺️
Tommy is brilliant doing this piece - amazing. His brother Phil, sadly passed played brilliantly as well. We in Aus, luckily grew up watching Tommy play guitar on local Tv. His version of ‘Classical Gas’ on Guitar, using it for a few different sounds is wonderful - his fingers, playing guitar so fast, remind me of spiders running at full speed at times. And Tommy’s laugh is infectious. A brilliant talented man indeed.
Tommy is amazing... I saw him perform live in Philadelphia and he did this type of number, Indigenous initiation sounds.... feet stamping/dancing etc. Thanks for this...
I was watching a video of him when he first heard Chet Atkins as a kid on the radio. He was fascinated at the finger style he was using and decided to learn how to play it. He spent months perfecting it and for years played like that only to find out later that he was playing two guitar parts in one. I wish I had the link to the story as I'm sure I've got some of it wrong, but that is the man Tommy Emmanuel, a freak of nature when it comes to the guitar. His brother Phil was exceptional too, died way too young, rest his soul.
Classical gas is something not to be missed. Tommy Emmanuel’s a musical genius. No one plays the guitar like him. He’s also a really a really great guy.
As with all music, it's not important what you get from it, it's only important that you get something from it. Tommy is an effing genius, watching him live is something you never forget. Thanks for giving this great man some love.
We put delay and reverb on and its all about finding sweet spots on the guitar. Scratching the strings, he wears all the gloss off the face exposing the grain etc. He goes through so many guitars it's crazy. I have one of those guitars and it's incredible.
There is a famous Australian schoolyard saying that sums up your interpretation here… I’ll take 3 of whatever he is smoking…😂🤣😂 in all seriousness though, Tommy Emanuel is an Aussie legend and has been at the cutting edge of guitaring for as long as I can remember. I’m glad that you got so much from his music. You should check out some of the collaborations that he has had throughout the years. He really is the epitome of a modern musician. Love your work. Keep up the high quality videos. You’re absolutely killing it and I can’t wait until your next video! Cheers.
Tommy Emmanuel is the only performer I would say if you get the chance to see live you absolutely must. And while most guitarists are jerks back stage TE is not he's a really exceptional guy who treats back stage people exceptionally well.
I love Tommy! He’s very young here! He’s been living in Nashville for many years but thankfully has his YT channel. I wish he’d come home more often. 🇦🇺❤️
He is just sensational. He took us on a journey in our own imagination. I thank you Rob for your interpretation, I am sure he would appreciate your understanding of his music. His instrument became one with him as you say. I also love his version of 'classical gas'. Thank you Rob for reminding me what a great musician Tommy is. cheers Elizabeth Le
Tommy live is an experience that can't be explained. We honestly don't have the words to explain this sort of unbelievable talent in the English language. Sit in his audience and close your eyes, and it's the most magical thing ever. Thanks for reacting this this Rob, and loved your appreciation for a musical master
Tommy is more than a master guitarist. He is arguably the best guitarist of all time. His late brother, Phil, was an exceptional guitarist as well. If you watch Tommy's left hand, you'll see he sometimes strums the strings making it sound like two guitars.
Yes Rob he is an ironically brilliant musician, and a truly lovely man, check out his version of the excellent "Classical Gas" it is fantastic the speed he can play and in one part bend the neck of his acoustic wow. Keep Safe Keep Strong 🦘🦘🦘🦘🎶🎶🎶🎶
Isn’t he amazing. I was listening to that with my eyes closed. I love listening to him play. Great reaction Rob, you need to listen to other pieces of Tommy.❤️❤️
THE most innovative guitarist you will ever see. He did it the hard way too being brought up in a really talented musical family. Brother Phil (RIP) was equally remarkable as can e seen on a number of YT videos, search for Emmanuel Brothers. Tommy was a member of our legendary band The Bushwackers for some time (as many Aussie musos were) can be found in a very good version of the Ryebuck Shearer (1984). Vision here is quite old but he had been sought after and appeared with many fine artists. Well known in thr US where he now resides.
The first time I heard him play was seeing him on the Classical Gas youtube vid and I officially had my mind blown. Never knew anyone could play a guitar like that.
Hey Rob, if you haven't already, you should check out Rick Beato's interview with Tommy. And as a bonus at the end, Tommy plays with Mike Dawes, a fantastic British guitarist. Tommy and Mike have quite a few duets on YT.
As a specialist UA-camr in analysing and reacting to Australian culture, it's amazing it took you so long to discover Tommy Emmanuel. But I'm glad you did. Tommy has gone on to become one of the greatest Fingerstyle guitarists of all time. And as an Australian who first saw Tommy performing in Sydney's pubs in the early 1980s, I couldn't be more proud of him. You will thoroughly enjoy all his UA-cam videos Rob, so I wish you all the best as you venture into this musical rabbit hole.
It's an extraordinary piece. Not sure if he still does it as part of the live show, certainly not in any show I've seen in the last 7 or so years, but there are a few different full length versions of it on YT, all subtly different. Well worth catching on of these, and indeed pretty much everything he's done. Met him several times and even played with him once in Scotland on one of his guitar camps. He nursed me through a duet with grace!
This is done with a delay not a looper, to make it even more impressive. I have seen him live about 8 times and when in a good theater with great sound it makes it even more amazing.
It was once said of Tommy he plays bass, rhythm & lead guitar all at the same time. I am a big fan, saw him live at Hamer Hall in Melbourne a couple of years ago. However technically check out Kema on UA-cam playing Pharaon. Absolutely brilliant performance from Paris in 2012. Flemenco but brilliant, he is the grandson of Manitas De Plata.
He relies on strong reverb and echo with this tune, not that he needs to rely on special effects. The man's a genius. Whenever and whatever he plays, he gets out of his guitars the absolute maximum. Don't over think it, just live the moment and enjoy.
He has improved upon this piece in the years since this video. Check out the newer video of this it is so much better. I know what you're thinking how could it possibly get any better.answer watch it and see.
Initiation evolved over the years. On his first album Up from Down Under it was very tame actually. Then imo it peaked on his Center Stage album-down-tuned, chanting into the mic, inducing feedback, inedible. I saw him in 2009 doing initiation on stage, and in real life he manages to make the theater literally shake with the rumbling sounds!
This guy is a genius....he has natural talent. Probably the best guitarist in the world right now. He makes the guitar make the sounds he wants it to! I began teaching myself piano in my mid twenties...it's hard to learn an instrument when you're that old! Speaking of...I'd better go & tickle those ivories...😅
As the name of the piece is Ïnnitiation"A native boy going from childhood to manhood... Magic and amazing.. No right or wrong as you said.. What the individual gets from a piece of art (which this song is) is such a personal journey.
Tommy spent most of his youth in an Aboriginal community. This is his interpretation of the initiation of a young Aboriginal youth. Lots of ceremony. Song and dance in the bush. You are so close !! Initiation is long , up to a week. and involves all the things you mentioned
G'day, Some people learn to play an instrument. few can make the instrument come to life. It would be interesting to see this as written music and somebody else try and duplicate it.
I've always regretted that I didn't say hi to him and tell him that I was listening to his music while I was shopping in the same supermarket one day, nearly collided trolleys, couldn't believe it was him. Right as I was listening to him.
He is an Australian virtuoso. Australians don't experience the music in the same way as people from other areas and nations, its one of a kind. Its also taking the sounds of our nation and putting it into music, along with right of passage of initiation of life. He is emotive, its virtuosity, its not sound, its movement that comes through sound for us. I am the same, except I am not a muscian, I am a dancer, that was made disabled and injured....but still the gifting is still there it helps me heal and reclaim my gift of movement and dance back. We are born with a different way of experiencing life. We also don't think the same way, words have different meaning, and our focus is not the same its different, but goes together. Jungle to you, tropics to me. I gave up my story/ies, because it broke my heart, devastated my soul and was left with no audience, no one wanted to hear mine or our stories, only their own. My gift of story died, and became my life, so I live my life story without audience, that doesn't need one.

Tommy is phenomenal his Ted talk on his life is fascinating as well
The Emmanual brothers have ben entertaining us for generations.
Don’t feel bad Rob, very very few can play like Tommy
Tommy is an artistic genius. Best and most innovative guitarist on the planet. No-one comes anywhere close.

He is touring Europe at present

That song is called "Initiation".
That still fits in with my story. Initiating a hunt ;)
One of the best in the world.!!!!!!!!!
ps... The magpies are going to lay eggs in your beard and customs will get you for smuggling Aussie birds....
JUST saying.............🤣
I like his later versions a bit better. They have more of a crescendo. I saw him take a request for this tune recently and he said he doesn’t play it anymore. He mentioned his guitar was not set up for it. Plus if you watch and play this a few times you realize it’s a pretty physical piece.
Even when he makes an error at 10:07 it sill works!

I got a couple of Tommy's CDs but I've never seen him in a show
He's from Melbourne. Victoria.
Rob have you seen Tommy play classical gas? It’s mind blowing!!
Ive not no
Rob if you ever want to watch Tommy perform classical gas then it has to be him playing in a studio with him wearing a striped shirt.
He is using an analog or a digital delay pedal that is not him making the noise like that it is the effect pedal
Have a look at “ My Life as a One Man Band” on TED. Tommy Emanuel gave interesting insights.
It's in the title... (Aboriginal) Initiation... from boy to man.
Rob you should have a look at Juzzie Smith - Introducing his One Man band. It’s awesome.
I always said "The Journey" by Tommy Emmanuel is the "creation" of Australia from the very settlement by the traditional land carers to when Europeans came to settle and in the end we become several nations but 1 continent under 1 flag representing everyone. If you think that was good try "The Journey"
Wow, recreates the sound and experience of a Didgeridoo from his guitar
Ghost stories. John Buttler's Ocean is similar
If you want energy have a listen to an Aussie band called Gondwana Land. Three piece outfit of keyboards, drums and didgeridoo. Fanbloodytastic.
And he’s an Aussie
Rob please find classical gas. On UA-cam. It's mind boggling.
