The opening scene was shot at 600mm so I'd say the lens is super sharp even up at the full tele range, as the lens was on pre-production firmware I'm not going to pixel peep any images or share any out but I think there are plenty of samples at 600mm through out the video where you can see the detail of the fine hairs of animals and such. hi, thank you for sharing your experience with 150-600. since i am mounting this lens on my xt5 with 1.5 crop factor, then technically with this lens i have an aperture limitation of 8.4-12! which is put me in a difficult situation of proper exposure in low light conditions, if i want to keep my iso low and shutter speed high. whats your advise?
@@kimfarrelly I see, and what to do when it’s on f8 and I have to set on high shutter speed and I don’t want to increase iso? Is there any solution or I must use this lens just in very good day light?
When I’m shooting I set shutter speed for what I need then aperture for the depth of focus I need then ISO to correct exposure. In that video there are shots at 12800 ISO and they look fine, to me. Maybe you need a bright 400mm prime for your shoots? Or maybe look into some AI noise reduction software if you are worried or are seeing noise you need gone.
It has to be black on the inside, which means black plastic with white paint that scratches off. If we believe the argument that the lens is painted to prevent length changes to the optics, the same would not apply to the hood which doesn't have any optics. :)
Thanks. It’s firmware that’s still in beta, meaning it’s still in a testing phase. The firmware is the software that makes the lens or camera operate. Usually that firmware is given a new revision for the release based on testing and feedback.

Lose the T/C, get a x-t5 and crop in. The images will be much sharper and have more contrast. I love my x-t4, but only small lenses with wide apertures are best. The x-t5 sensor is on a another level...
Do you have a photo that you took with the x t1 using this lens? There are rumors of some focus and sharpness issues I want to make sure before ordering the lens
I no longer have an X-T1 but Fuji say that the lens will work just fine, except for the extra buttons regarding focus presets and the slower AF of the older bodies will not allow the lens to keep focus when zooming but it’ll still snap to focus once you stop zooming. So if those things don’t matter to you then the X-T1 will operate as with any other Fuji lens.
Yes AF is better in the XF150-600mm and it’s a lot sharper on the longer end. Plus you can use the TC1.4 on the new zoom to get even more reach. I filmed the swans hatching their eggs with the TC1.4 on the 150-600 as well as some of the samples throughout the video. I’d rather the new zoom over the 100-400

@@kimfarrelly I had Tamron 150-600 until few years ago and I was always shooting at 7.1 and the long end, cause it wasn't sharp enough at 6.3 except for the close subjects on sunny day. So if this lens is sharp enough at 500@7.1 that it will be absolutely great for wildlife on Fuji system. 1.6kg, 900mm of total reach without TC and very important is that it doesn't protrude while zooming (just like Sony 200-600). So less dirt inside lens, less noise when you hide in bushes and easier maneuvering with lens. Also when you get inside hiding tent it's very annoying when your lens is changing it's length every time you want to zoom in or out.
@@mladenmitrinovic7013 It's very sharp from 150-600 in my experience with it, with the understanding that atmosphere/heat can effect things like sharpness at times.
It bothers me an inordinate amount that one of Fuji's high-end white lenses would come with a black plastic lens Hood as opposed to one of their white fujinon branded ones like the one with the XF 200mm. I feel pretty certain that over $2,000 retail it could warrant that extra manufacturing cost. 👎
Yeah the most important thing is a colour-matching lense hood... You seem to want to use it more for your image than for photography. Nobody cares about the colour of the lense or the lense hood...
My issue with this lens, price. Sony, Tamron and Sigma offer this range with a faster f stop (5.6-6.3). If Fuji’s version was a 6.3, yeah, I could see shelling out $2k (that is the going price for Sony's 150-600 5.6-6.3), but for an f8, pass... That said, I would not be shocked to see this price drop in the future, at which point, I might be interested. For the time being my 100-400 and 50-140 will have to do.
@@RandyPollock Why FF? You can use the Sigma and the Sony lens also on APS-C (f.e. A6600): Still 914mm Equ., but faster und cheaper than the Fuji offering. 2200€ for a F8 lens is a joke in my eyes. I hope now Sigma will deliver its 150-600 5-6,3 DG DN for X Mount soon.
@@RandyPollock Once this lens is released and filters its way into the rental stores, I plan to rent a copy for a few days (as I normally do before committing hard-earned $$$$ on gear) and see for myself. Still a bit pricey but I am beginning to see some positive aspects to this lens, so who knows...?
@@gerben4875 Because all other brands offer more speed (f6,3) at the same range (600mm) for less money. Fe. in Germany the Sony f6.3 lens (which you can use on Sony APS-C thanks to the same mount...) is about 500$ cheaper than Fujis F8. And the Sigma DG DN 5-6,3 is about 800$ cheaper. So why should i pay more money for less benefit?
I don't know, man. F/8 and everything above 300 mm gets exponentially softer - for 2000€ is kind of ridiculous. Should be more like 1200€-1400€, considering what similar gear costs on full frame. The Sony 200-600 mm goes for 1650€ where I live, and it's much sharper and faster than the fuji. I'll stick with my 100-400 mm for now, maybe upgrade to the Tamron 150-500 mm or wait and hope for a cheaper alternative like the 150-600 mm from Sigma to make it to the X-Mount system in the future.
I found 300mm up plenty sharp on my one, as you can see in the images shown, and yes the f/8 thing was a bit of a concern at first but I quickly got over that. More options for that range on the way from others too if you need it. Have a look at the video segment near the beginning of the review with the swans hatching their chicks. That was filmed at 600mm with the TC1.4 attached and it’s really sharp. As where the images of the swans
@@kimfarrelly sure you can get great results with it in the real world, but I've seen chart tests that show quite some softness at the long end. I think the cheaper Tamron is the better alternative but there's virtually no videos about the Fuji version. Anyway, I hope there's more competitive super telephoto lenses on the way, the new X-H2/s are great cameras for wildlife and bird photography, and I think there's a lot of room for third party lenses to fill.

Can you compare this baby against the XF 100-400 with teleconverter?
Yes AF is better in the XF150-600mm and it’s a lot sharper on the longer end. Plus you can use the TC1.4 on the new zoom to get even more reach. I filmed the swans hatching their eggs with the TC1.4 on the 150-600 as well as some of the samples throughout the video. I’d rather the new zoom over the 100-400
@@kimfarrelly Awesome review. I don’t suppose you tried it with the TC2?
@@steverawsthorne1672 My buddy and fellow X Photographer Sean McCormick did for part of the day, IQ is as good as you would expect from what I saw in his review and on the day in camera. He has a few images up on his blog: www.seanmccormack.com/news/2022/a-day-with-the-fujinon-xf150-600
I want this, but I'd imagine it will look quite ridiculous on my X-E4 :D
Be like having no camera
@@kimfarrelly I have the accessory grip though so it won't look too bad right?....RIGHT?
Love my X-E4 for its compactness though :)
what app do you use to edit your photos/videos? thanks!
For photos, @CaptureOne and photoshop. For video, DaVinci Resolve.
@@kimfarrelly thank you! 🙏
Great review, thank you. You mention a new camera... the XH-2 perhaps, or the rumoured XT-5 I wonder :-)
I’ll have to leave you wondering on that one for now. NDAs are fun
Good review
Where'd you get your Fuji strap?
It's an X Photographer Peak Design strap, basically this strap with the Fuji badges: amzn.to/3ejNyvf
what is the max aperture at 400mm zoom setting? :)
I’d have to look up the files but I think it’s f/7.1
@@kimfarrelly i was hopping for 5.6 :)
@@mladenmitrinovic7013 It's also f/7.1 up to 520mm then changes to f/8. I mostly shot it at F/8 or 11 with some video at 13
@@kimfarrelly I had Tamron 150-600 until few years ago and I was always shooting at 7.1 and the long end, cause it wasn't sharp enough at 6.3 except for the close subjects on sunny day.
@@mladenmitrinovic7013 It's very sharp from 150-600 in my experience with it, with the understanding that atmosphere/heat can effect things like sharpness at times.
this lens work with X T1 anyone try ????
Yes it’ll work on an X-T1
@@kimfarrelly Thank you for answer. I love X T1 and I dont want to new camera.
A white hood adds €4k to the lens, ask any 200mm owner.
Lmao.
If your going to compare it to FF lens, then at least say it's F8 at over 914mm not 600mm
@@muttishelfer9122 could you eloborate why 2k for f8 at 600mm is a joke?
Great to have the choice these days, was a lot worse a few years ago.
@@cy9nvs Well, all that matters is "real world". People now get hung up on so many little things.
The price is okay for what it is.
@ickebins6948 the price is an absolute joke. 🤨
