you can solo the bands in EQ3 by holding shift and control + moving the band knobs.

I met up with David Bendeth not long ago and he had a great old school tip for me to get things translating. His approach (I think likely learnt from Arif Mardin) is to make the mix sound identical on his two different sets of monitors. He'd have his mixes so he'd flip between ns10's and his tannoys and you wouldn't be able to tell which is which. He also liked getting out the sweet spot and making sure things are audible at all points in the room. I love my mono auratone as you can have it fairly quiet and it gives you a truer sense of volume without any bass/room issues.

This technique has been used by almost every professional mix engineer that I ever met from that era. I think the word "identical' is a bit deceiving, because it is literally impossible. The basic idea, is to make the mix translate so that it doesn't sound too harsh on the NS10s or too dull on the Tannoys. The ultimate goal is to make the mix balances sound the same on every set of monitors you play them on because there is no way to control the frequency response of every monitoring system. I often used a mono Auratone under the console or pointed away from me so that I could judge the mix in less than optimal listening situations. This almost always exposed deficiencies in the mix immediately.
BTW, I worked with Arif Mardin back in the late 80's but never recall him making this a priority. Incredible producer, one of the all time greats!

Hi Mike I'm wondering how to get this to work for more rock/indie kind of music which doesn't have such full and dominant bass and kick in the full range mix? I'm finding it really hard with the sub 200 removed, it's not too bad sub 90 removed (i.e. mixcube range)

Nice video my man! I have a crap pair of monitors that I use, as well as a mono check. So many things to do with each mix we make.

Great video I like to use a C4 Multiband with no compression, split into 4 zones then I play my reference track and A/B the separate bands looking for issues. Ps I use Behritones :)

This is very interesting because I felt that most recordings with mics especially have too much build up of energy in this area that I try to clear this area up most of the times.
+Chris Cho Hi Chris, Yes, they do because most instruments have their fundamental frequencies in this range. The key is to know what frequencies you can remove from each instrument and which are necessary to keep.
