Very late to the party but I only saw London yesterday on Mubi; I was blown away, an absolutly brilliant film, I can't believe I hadn't either seen it or know of Keiller until that point. I didn't know anything about Keiller until then, and I immedialty thought of your films, John. Of course, when I put in his name into UA-cam you immedialty came up. Everything is connected...

I have always adored Keiller’s film LONDON, ever since I first saw it as a Fine Art degree student at Falmouth Art School in 1997. They had a copy in the art school library. I feel like it changed my life completely. And then later Robinson In Space. Have watched both films over and over. It’s wonderful to see your walk dedicated to such an important film and I love the reverence you obviously have for it. I’ve often visited places featured. It resonates so much with me too. I've watched several of your films during 'Lockdown' as we've come to know it. I began with your very recent films, then drifted off, looking specifically for films featuring Iain Sinclair - which prompted me to buy "The Last London" - and have now begun jumping in at random. This is by far my favourite of those I've seen. I've visited London possibly only twenty or so times in my 63 years and have rarely strayed beyond the main hubs of Westminster, Whitehall, Soho etc. Your films have given me an appreciation of what lies without ... and I thank you for that. Greetings from Leicester! 👍🏼

    Hi John hope you're well.
I was pleasantly surprised to see this segment included Roehampton [some scenes from Fahrenheit 451 were filmed here in the mid 60s].
Roehampton was one of my suggestions for a walk so glad you covered it within this video.
You also recently covered Crystal Palace [#101 maybe?] so you do get around!
Any chance you will consider the vicinity of Henry VIII's Nonesuch Palace? Don't think there's much to see and it may be too far outside your typical range but hopefully you'll consider.
Take care John and keep up the good work.

thanks very much. Oddly I was down in Stockwell with Iain Sinclair last week visiting Van Gogh's home and he asked if I included the Apollinaire scene in my Keiller video, but that I believe is a different walk, one that goes to Stoke Newington. It would be interesting to do more, perhaps from his earlier films such as Stonebridge Park (covered in a podcast I made a while back), and Norwood. Brilliant idea for a walk. I love that film, and remember seeing it back in the 90s. I recently saw the film again. It's surprising how much London has changed. London in the early 1990s was a bit more run-down and litter strewn. London's population has probably grown by more than a million since then, its economy feels more robust, the transport system much better. The last ten years has brought a lot of redevelopment, making the city feel more modern, more gentrified and of course less authentically London, especially areas like Dalston and Shoreditch. (Dalston features in the film for an instant in showing Ridley Road market, which is still there and retains its character surrounded by an altered landscape and mood.)

Brilliant, brilliant walk! Especially since Keiller's London is still fresh in my mind - I watched it about a month ago (after your recommendation on one of you earlier blog posts) - it blew my mind about how a film can be made. Also loved the swan in one of the windows at 4:41 - an unintentional (?) nod to that film with Andrew Kotting and Iain Sinclair the name of which escapes me now.
BTW, I am always amazed at how clean the urban areas are in your videos - no rubbish, papers, fast food containers, plastic bags lying around! Do you have people picking up 24/7 or do British people just not litter?

Hi John, great video I have Kiellers London on DVD and have always loved it. The point at 16:34 when you say that you can't tell where the place is that Robinson speaks about psychic landscaping I think it may be Burgess Park that is shown as there is a pond there and a church in the background that may be the one where one of the founders of the Rolls Royce brand is buried, I cant remember the name of the church. Similarly, the large McDonalds shown in the film could have been on the Old Kent Road? That's the only place nearby I could think of.

@@JohnRogersWalks I've just finished watching the first one. It's very prescient but also shows how everything just goes around in the manner of 'plus ca change', if that's not too much of a paradox. Maybe some of these patterns imprint themselves on time, or are always happening, as Robinson (perhaps) seems to believe when he 'time travels'. Have you ever seen it with the subtitles? The subtitles sometimes match the sound of, rather than the spirit of, the words. So, towards the end, with around four minutes to go, you get the immortal line "The English fear of potpourri and socialism". Now I understand why all those people who march against Potpourri on 12th July are called Orangemen...

I think the iron post is an old gas street light. We had a few that looked exactly the same around the Southend area. They were a lovely homage to lost Victorian heritage. About 5 years ago the Council in their infinite wisdom dug them all out and dumped them in a scrap yard for £100 each. Made a lot of locals very sad. I love the bit with the underpass under the A3 - so 'romantic!' Sad for those deer... It's not nice to see them happily grazing unaware of their potential fate, and then you emerged from the park at an archway that mentioned 'cruelty to animals'. I found that very profound and ironic.

Fantastic work John. I was also hugely influenced by Patrick Keiller. We’ve just been watching and are desperate to know what the string quarter music is in the opening sequence. It’s really beautiful stuff!

thanks very much Mike - the music at the beginning is Pachabelly by Huma-Huma from the UA-cam Audio Library - your comment made me realise I hadn't put the music credits in the video description

@@JohnRogersWalks I saw London on Film Four one afternoon back in the early 2000s. I was totally captivated. Pat K got me into Defoe and the whole walking thing. I have been exiled from London due to being priced out, but here in Nottingham is worth exploring, so I might do that. Ha! As I type this I know that there are sheep smuggling tunnels below me somewhere! Every place has history. The red brick down the road from me was dug up by a Quaker and makes up most of St Pancras station for example. In fact, where I am looks a LOT like Stoke Newignton, just a LOT cheaper!

In 2010 the V&A had an exhibition on Horace Walpole (son of GB's 1st PM) and Strawberry Hill. Like a lot of the V&A's exhibitions, the title seems dull and uninteresting but the exhibition proves to be excellent. ('Quilts' was another). Link below to the V&A reference, which has further links for those interested,

Here as promised John, considerably later than I would have liked, are three interesting places that you could have visited along the way but didn't have time to due to your late start. The first is an excellent pub on Putney Common called the Green Man. The reason why I decided to include this is because it has a legendary association with your favourite highwayman, Dick Turpin, who is said to have hidden his guns in an upstairs room. More here:
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_Man,_Putney
Another key location along the route, which affords one of the best views of the Thames Valley in London, is a Prehistoric Earthwork in Richmond Park called King Henry VIII's Mound. It is only a very short distance from the Park Gate and is also well worth a visit:
    www.royalparks.org.uk/parks/richmond-park/richmond-park-attractions/king-henrys-mound
And, last, but not least, and just a stone's throw from Caesar's Camp, which you have already visited, is the Windmill on Wimbledon Common which has an interesting anecdotal assocation with Robert Baden-Powell, founder of the Boy Scout Movement:
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wimbledon_Common
I am sure you will be doing the walk again when the days are longer so bear all these in mind for future reference!

The problem of London is now clearer than it was in 1992 - the city (and City) has been defaced by rapacious developers and the Profit Motive, which successive governments has connived with and encouraged. Keiller's film now looks like a study in nostalgia.
