While Black Sludge is no longer just a strict upgrade to Leftovers on a Poison type mon due to Tera, it theoretically still has a use in the same way it used to, you can just let it be Tricked away before Tera and it's no different than before. There is definitely reason not to run it because of the defensive capability of Tera letting you be something other than Poison, but if you plan to use other mons as your Tera (either as offensive threats or as a different defensive utility) there's still just as much reason to run Black Sludge as there ever was. All in all, there's a bit of give and take with the tactical benefits and risks that Black Sludge now poses, instead of just being a given to run over Leftovers entirely on certain mons

@SquidSystem unless you Tera and then use trick giving them your black sludge, ie gengar and galarian slowbro learn trick so use black sludge with them and if you need to tera out of your poison type you do so and immediately use trick
@Deluvenai Well the question is why you would ever do that instead of just running Leftovers and not wasting one the move slots for two of the most versatile Pokemon in the game to give 1 Pokemon reverse leftovers. Like the payoff for that is so poor, it just doesn't make sense to ever do that
@@SquidSystem Because trick is fun? I was playing around with a doubles team with flame orb guts ursaluna to be partnered with a trick+trick room armorouge with leftovers. Great explanation and video. Sludge definitely can still be worth using, especially on more offensive sets in competitive play. You know what a high level player thinks when black sludge ticks? Tera poison and/or lack of game knowledge. Baller move is running surprise non poison Tera regardless. Your item is going to get knocked off anyways.

tbh the item hasn't really been optimal for most gens it is in as there has always the issue of the trick user just using the move again which is only prevented via non-removable items seen in gens 4, 6 and 7 non-ubers tiers.
I knew you were gonna say terra straight away
If you don't intend to Tera those pokemon. But yeah.
Although you are right, the only pokemon I saw that can use trick and not get affected by Black Sludge is the Gastley line.
The fact that Toxapex is so bulky means it can stay on the field for a while even without tera, though. Just use Black Sludge and Regenerator
So basically, this is a total non-issue if a Pokemon doesn't use Terastalize (which is hardly unprecedented when, much like all the prior gimmicks, only one Pokemon on the team can use it), or you use a Poison Tera Type (it being pretty popular to have a Tera Type match a Pokemon's native Type in order to capitalize on the triple STAB).
Found this one out the hard way 💀
Toxapex before Terastillization: i love sludge
Toxapex After Grass Terastilliazation: Ow! I hate this gloop of shi-
But that's ONLY if you change it's type...
What if you choose poison??? Or tera another Pokemon instead????
Yo thanks for this! I wondered why no one ran the sludge!
This was fantastic
Great explanation and video.
Sludge definitely can still be worth using, especially on more offensive sets in competitive play.
You know what a high level player thinks when black sludge ticks? Tera poison and/or lack of game knowledge.
Baller move is running surprise non poison Tera regardless.
Your item is going to get knocked off anyways.
I remember learning this very early in the meta some people are still holding onto black sludge which really limits defensive mons but I only know because I tricked one of them
I love making the most beefy possible pokemon that you just can't hurt
I have an iron defense body press maxed def and sp. Def garganacl with terra ground
I gave it smack down and earthquake for stab, and I gave it leftovers to heal
Plus, it also has purifying salt which means it cant get status conditions
Lastly I always play it in doubles by sending it out with my max speed meowscarada that uses trick room
What if you have a stall Pokémon you always terastilize and you do into a poison type. Don’t have a good example, but could happen
It’s not that useless. After all, it beats being badly poisoned from Toxic Orb, so you could still run Facade with minimal risk. There’s also using Fling since you already completed getting normal poisoned.
Well in wifi battles with item clause it is quite useful
