Imagine you're some scientist who's been trying to crack the code for time traveling and then you bump into this guy in the woods, thinking you've succeeded.
Totally awesome, and a great video The song made it for me, I'm imagining walking the woods early on a misty morning and hearing that carried by the wind from a distant unknown place, magical :)
To be honest, I can't not think of the game Gothic 1 when I hear Herr Mannelig beeing played :D After a certain point in the game, the band In Extremo performs a version of Herr Mannelig as a live show in the game. Gothic was (and still is) one of the greatest medieval fantasy RPG series and was the start of my interest in the fantasy/adventure genre.
imagine if your friends ( the boys ) agree to camping with fantasy style and playing D&D when the night's dark beside the campfire and food , omg it's must be the best experience ever
You're doing what I'm gearing up for next year! although I think I'm going to opt for a handaxe instead of a longsword. it seems more useful, and less in the way.
Oh, the sword is completely useless. It's essentially decorative. At some point I want to attempt to emulate some of Aragorn's feats, so the sword is just there because Aragorn carried a similar weight in a similar shape. A small axe is 100% the way to go from a practical standpoint.
I hope you make another video like this. I haven't seen any other videos like this on the internet or atleast a full video showcasing it. if you make this a series i will totally watch it.
I absolutely love these videos. It looks like great fun to do. I don't know where you guys are located but I wish there was a group near me here in north central Florida. I would totally be down for checking it out. Fantasy movies like lord of the rings are my all time favorite. Dwayne
Is your sheath built into the pouch? Whatever motivates people to get out in nature, practice skills and have some kind of functioning load out.is a.ok with me. Great video.
The pouch hangs by 2 loops, and the hori knife's sheath hangs between them-- so they can be worn in separate spots, but also hang nested together in a way I like.
Instead of grabbing the cattails all willy-nilly it seems like you could take the 19 or so, and then have like one, a particularly nice one, to bind them all.
This is like Medieval Forest Ranger/ Generation:Amish / Off The Grid With Hour with Brigham, Joseph and Lord Nephi--Agricultural New Religious Movement. It sounds really fun.
@@TheRamblingShepherd Thank you, Shepherd. I was hoping to find one pre-made, but yours is so much nicer that you've convinced me that DIY is the only way.
As a tip you should NEVER dig with your knife. You should use your knife to make a digging stick and use it like you would your knife. Speaking of which what kind of knife were you using?
The knife is a Japanese hori knife specifically designed for digging. Obviously its blade isn't razor-sharp, but it's not supposed to be; it's essentially a sharper-than-average trowel. I have a small Mora for tasks where a keen edge is needed.
@@TheRamblingShepherd Interesting, I've heard of these knives but didn't know that's what you had. I haven't used a hori before and I'm not sold on it as a bush crafting tool. I'd have to use one myself. How do you like it for chopping wood and doing other camp craft?
@@danmorgan3685 I think you could baton with it reasonably well, and chop in a pinch. You can see me cutting reeds with it in the video. Digging is really its key role, though. If I needed to shave a featherstick, I'd use my finer knife.

I would gladly stop by your fire singing Herr Mannelig along with you.
Really awesome man! Came here from reddit. Love the details like the littles sacks for food! the nice leather straps on your holster, etc.
Thanks! I made most of the kit, and almost all the rest was made by friends.

Nice . Enjoyed that. I better not go traipsing about the woods with a sword on my back though 😂. Love the trick with the Dakota fire pit 👌
The song you sing wonderfully sounds familiar. Could someone please tell me what it is?
"Herr Mannelig", a Swedish folk song.
@@TheRamblingShepherd Thank you!
Oh my god, this is amazing. It would be cool to do a John Muir JMT expedition, but I'm the control group with modern tech. XD

Can you tell me anything about that flute of yours? Where can I get one
Yeah, they're readily available--a Clarke Original Whistle. I took off the gold accents with steel wool.

One thing you can do to camp like strider is never eat 2nd breakfast.

Footwear by footskins.
when I saw the size of those reeds I then realised why you took the sword

Sorry, yeah--maintaining it at that URL was getting expensive, so it's now at www.etsy.com/shop/ShepherdCartography
