The first note of the overture never fails to bring me to the brink of tears. It’s so...powerful. It’s almost like it hits you with all of the magic of theatre all at once
Oh I agree so much. I saw phantom December 9th of 2022. The Australian cast. As soon as the overture started I started crying my eyes out lol, even tho it’s all colourful and they’re rehearsing Hannibal and stuff, that organ note is beautiful
I've seen this show three times live, and it never fails to send chills when the auctioneer announces "Perhaps we can frighten away the ghost of so many years ago with a little Illumination...GENTLEMEN!" and I'm bloody bawling by the time that first note hits and the chandelier lights up.
Overture FOR SURE always gives me the feels! Even when I first heard & discovered Phantom (5 years old) now I'm 14 & of course it STILL gives my body chills. I've only seen the show once which was last year but when I heard the first note of the Overture I TEARED up. Oh... I wanna be a musical theater actor one day... We'll see.
Overture is the best! It always makes me want to cry because it is so awesome! Seeing the change and rising of the chandelier with the amazing music just puts in my awe every time!
When I went to see this a few years ago in my hometown, the chandelier was already hanging from the ceiling at the start of the auction scene, and it was covered in some sort of thick fabric. At the start of the overture, the fabric was automatically pulled away and stuffed inside the prop, revealing the chandelier. Now here's the thing that blew me away. In this show, the chandelier was hanging above the audience, and I was sitting on the balcony that stretched around the right side of the theatre, probably just 30-40 feet away from it. So at the start of the overture, this huge crazy flashing thing was revealed right in front of me as the intense, badass music started, and I was in absolute shock since I had no idea that it was going to happen. Best introduction in all of theater history.
It depends on the venue, if they are able to rig the chandelier into the ceiling to have the effect of hanging above the audience, and to crash down onto the stage at the end of Act 1.
I saw this back in '99 at the Majestic Theater when I was in college and it's a totally differently experience when you see this masterpiece live rather than on TV. As soon as the pipe organ kicks in, the floor vibrates, your chair shakes, and a plethora of emotions runs through your body. You feel joy, fear, suspense, awe, and so much more. You may even shed some tears, but that's ok. You're surrounded by musical magic & genius. It's sensory overload and it never gets old.
For me personally, I think what would sell the fact that you’re going back in time is the feeling of wind blowing and dust flying starting from 1:23 when the chandelier starts to rise up
Sends shivers through me every time!!! It is just so awesome, I've seen it live 3 times and would still go again and again!!! Arguably Andrew Lloyd Webbers finest work.
As awesome as this is, seeing it live is kind of difficult to describe. I first saw this at the majestic back in 97, being a teenager and having very little prior knowledge of the show. When that chandelier goes up and the theatre rumbles with pipe organ, it’s *completely* breathtaking.
everyone's talking about only tearing up but i full on cried. saw the broadway production this year for my birthday and me and my mom were full on sobbing from how powerful this was to see live. so sad that's it's closing because everyone deserves to see this at least once.
This is how the auction scene should be; creepy, foreboding, leading into one of the greatest moments in live theater when the overture begins! The new tour completely ruined this whole scene, which is my favorite part of the entire show. Pitiful...
I know what you mean :/ I refuse to see the tour, in my opinion it ruined something that was perfectly fine the way it is. I think my heart stopped the first time I heard the overture lol
I enjoyed the tour, America was wonderful, London is amazing, Brazil (South America) was much better than my expectations and it thrilled me. The Phantom of the Opera is the formula of sure success
Saw this December 9 2022, I’m 17 I’ve loved the show since I was 14, but not completely obsessed. I saw it and fuck I cried so hard as soon as the overture started. The Australian cast is beautiful, the chandelier is amazing I swear, the chandelier doesn’t get risen in the aus version. It’s on the roof and the drape over it gets sucked inside the chandelier, still amazing. It also doesn’t swing onto the stage, it falls straight down, which was terrifying lol I was right underneath it
Angry, Sad, Disappointed, and Hurt that his brilliantly dramatic and emotional Overture ceases to perform in the Majestic every night. A huge unfathomable loss.
I sat in the middle of the 4th row which means that the chandelier was right on top of me for the whole show and when it “fell” it scared the crap out of me
Ike the stage arts and the ideas and the orchestra was the best. I can still feel the chill when this happened with out me knowing this was ganna happen!
Cassia Olsen He’s also one of the first cast members from the original Broadway production! As a replacement for many roles (the auctioneer included) no less!

Seriously!
Seen it five times and those first chords just knock the wind out of me every time.
The powerful overture sets the tone and energizes the audience!! It’s so amazing!!!

That's the same as me it's a tiny bit of a weird feeling because when I saw a musical It persuaded me to be an actor so I agree with you alot

That's how it works in the US Tour version.

Creepy. ..brillant and a really great Moment. Makes me always beautiful goose bumps.
What did they do wrong on the tour?

@@isakenobi4596 Brazil has been my favorite so far!!
Ever since I saw this live exactly like this I've cried hearing the overture. Hearing it in the Theatre in a box made me love this show even more.

Great video I was there 5/12/14 sitting on row 3 and feel the chandeler :-) Norm was fantastic and so was Sierra also. Thank you for sharing
I am so jealous, and I wish I could've seen Sierra :) no problem!
I sat in the middle of the 4th row which means that the chandelier was right on top of me for the whole show and when it “fell” it scared the crap out of me
@@Giffometry The Phantom of the opera Broadway musical is going off Broadway
Seriously I love the show. ITS AMAZING

Gentlemen!
I love this show The Phantom of the Opera part
I saw this back in 2008, and I was unaware that the pipe organ was so loud when the chandelier started to lift up!
Who is this Auctioneer in this? I demand to know. He sounds like he belongs in Rocky Horror.
Lol he looks and sounds like riff-raff.
Carrington Vilmont is his name. He’s actually playing the role on Broadway right now. I’ve seen him twice and he is my absolute favorite auctioneer.
LeFantômedel'Opéra Carrington is the best!
Cassia Olsen He’s also one of the first cast members from the original Broadway production! As a replacement for many roles (the auctioneer included) no less!
His make-up looks a bit creepy too, but it's because that the actor is in fact quite young so yeah
Amazing😍
I saw this version live on July 18 last year
Chris Drake i saw wicked on July 18th and phantom on the 19th and 20th!

How did you get to videotape part of the show?
I didn't record this, a very generous person sent it to me :)
Hold on, was there no "no photography or videography" announcement before the show?
I don't believe that it's coming from the audience.
JonTron?
I love this show The Phantom of the Opera part
