I like vw's, I don't recommend buying them for an investment but because you like them. If they increase in value, that's a bonus in my opinion.

Regarding the Ghia with auto-stick, years ago I worked for a VW specialty shop that had a 68 Beetle with auto-stick. Unless you've driven one you probably think it's a slushy piece of crap, but I was really surprised how peppy it was. Now I like the while manual gearbox experience, but I wouldn't be opposed to owning one if it was a compelling car otherwise.
In my day blowing a tranny meant car trouble. But seriously folks, it seems that knowing how to drive a manual is getting rare. Maybe thats why they're valued higher than one would expect.
I loved driving my VWs. I started out with a '67 Beetle, then later switched to buses and had a '67, a '68 and finally a '72. Not collector quality, but just great daily drivers. I bought the '72 for $2000 (had a blown engine) back in '78 and the others I paid
I had a 1960’s notch back that was not running in 1980-85. My first experience building an engine. I had the engine all together in my bedroom and the car in the front yard but the house was sold and I had to move. I towed it to the neighborhood VW repair shop in south Austin and they took it off my hands. Hope they got it running and made some money on it

Even back in the days when it seemed “normal” to pay huge sums of money for (samba) buses I didn’t understand why people were prepared to pay 100.000+ for them. Seems bus prices are much more realistic now. Nice video 👍
Thank you for the auction update, Chris. I guess that my preference for real value of our beloved Beetles is BaT and, as you have mentioned, values have been pretty soft for awhile. Keep up the good work, I always look forward to your UA-cam videos.

I have a '78 Beetle Convertible with the original fuel injection. It's mostly original, runs and drives great, with no rust, but starting to show its age. It's a good driver that could be left as is or given a refresh. I am considering selling it this spring. If I do, I will be asking $9,000 but willing to let it go for as little as $7,500 (I paid $5,300 for it back in 2018).

I was at the Mecum and was looking at all the VWs. I was actually Surprised to see some sell for less. I guess i was fortunate enough to Sell my Fully Restored 56 Ragtop for $40, 500 back in October of 2023 on Ebay. And Not a Matching Numbers Car.

That's the latest year I would own. Most people would say 67, but the redesigned fenders for the sealed beam lights is a turn-off for me.
I Love my 66' too! I paid too much for it but I don't regret it in the least.
What a nice surprise to have your vid pop up on my feed. Currently replaced the jell cells of odometer and small lights, replace all fresh air hoses.

Chris, I'm an older hot rodder and I've had 60's and 70's beetles these past 4 decades. I'm starting to hold on to anything with a gas engine because one day people will miss them. I think there are several forces working against VW's in the 2020's-
1. The pandemic is behind us now, and we're not buying cars out of desperation like in '20-'21.
2. On every major interstate/highway there are extremely aggressive and powerful vehicles that young peeps find more attractive.
3. The new EV's are INSANELY FAST from 0-60 and people love that insane torque. Rivian is blowing up here in Colorado, Tesla is everywhere, and many hot rodders are excited about a new DeLorean.
4. With all the power in new vehicles, and more aggressive driving on all the roads, any pre '68 VW is becoming undesirable because they have weaker engines, are very slow in a road rage world, and might be an undesirable 6 volt system. Nobody wants a 6 volt car when a Rivian is doing 0-60 in 2.8 seconds.
5. Perhaps most importantly, passing a required emissions test for your old bug is expensive, and there are very few import/ vintage VW shops with great mechanics that know their stuff around now.
Looks like the influx of late model Brazilian busses in the last few years might be causing the prices of '67 and earlier busses to drop.
Oh those late convertibles are killing me, I gave away one to a used car dealer for a Volvo 240 about 20 years ago, unbelievable to believe it's worth 20 times that now, but it's nice to know that my 62 might be worth some good money, I'm really thinking about letting it go, I restored it about 15 years ago and I don't want to have to restore it again so might be the time to sell, I just don't have another restoration in me, the paint looks good from 15 ft so it will be interesting to see if people overlook that because it looks great
I still have a comfortably restored 1965 bug with a ragtop added. I’m in New Hampshire.

@classicvwbugs I think the vw hobby will go well into the future because they are so popular car also I think they will change the petrol engine into electric motor and younger people probably will go for them more. That's what I think I could be wrong
I have this exact same car. I also have a 78 SB convertible. Both cars have been in my family since new. Can I have been the owner for the last twenty years or so. Unbelievable what these can sell for. I'm in Southern California.
And drive these cars several times a month just to keep them.

I have noticed a flood of type II's from Mexico, which is good enough for someone to relive their childhood. I think that has reduced the selling price for the early vans. Regardless, I am scared to see the prices fluctuate as good parts are hard to come by. Type III..... still waiting for them to skyrocket.

Eventually all the rich guys that wanted VWs will have got them, and we don’t see as many ridiculous prices
Late 70’s beetles can keep up in modern traffic, I am tired of getting yelled at doing 50 in a 60 zone, and I think the next generation wants a car they can actually take on a modern highway to get to a show. So glad I bought most of my collection when they sold for only a thousand dollars. At any new auction price, I am driving for free!
What people have been paying for cars with a very limited fan base that is dying off 🙋🏻♂️ is really crazy. I love the old VWs. I learned to drive a stick in a 1966 beetle, but let’s face it. These cars aren’t really great for today’s roads. Most classics aren’t without major changes. I just take mine to shows, but it’s totally road worthy with working AC.
I just sold the 1975 F.I. bug in my avatar for 17K. IMO i did quite a bit better than current market. I was lucky to find a buyer who HAD to have my car, and saved me from going to auction

@classicvwbugs Thanks! it's one of those sales that I felt like was fate of sorts. The economy hasn't been kind to my family the last couple years and I was toying with the idea of selling. Somebody hit me up out of the blue from Texas and made me an offer I couldn't refuse. He's going to have a blast, factory fuel injection running on top of a 8.6 :1 compression 1776. Quite the kick in the pants improvement over stock.
Did the 57 oval only have a Bill of Sale, no Title? Perhaps that affected price.
I personally believe that the car collecting era started to gradually decline years ago. I see very little interest in the younger generations collecting anything.
Better places and things to spend money on to them. We old timers are dying off.
Self Driving Cars are on the way, so interest will drop further over the coming decade as young people won't even get drivers licenses.
Disposable income usually goes to things like food and mortgage payments these days

@ They couldn't care less about cars period. To them cars are just a means of transportation. Uber and Lyft are much more convenient.
I've got 3 insured with Hagerty. 72 westy at $35k, 79 Convert $20k and 60 bug at $25. No way I could sell for that...
I've owned a 411 wagon, 73 Thing and 74 Thing. kinda over it. Moved to Porsche, now MB240D
I watch the Bugs for sale on Facebook market. I have seen where bugs that are so messed up are going or at lest asking for $3000 and up. Some dont have motors or the inside is all ripped and torn up. The nice ones are $15,000 even $35,000. Are they going to stay that high? Did you get moved to Florida yet?
What I find odd about the 79 convertible is the exhaust/muffler. Every fuel injected 78/79 that I saw had a single exhaust.
You’re correct. That’s an aftermarket Monza 4 tip muffler. I would change that That and the crinkly trunk liner.
The seller cheapen out on the exhaust system. NOS FI mufflers are available.
@ If I'm correct the car had very low mileage so there would be no reason to change the exhaust.
my favorites are the 1967 and older beetles
I think the Brazilian split busses are driving the prices down.
I'll take an early beetle any day over a later one. And a rag top sold for less than a hard top? What were those auction buyers thinking? SMH
Maybe more people need some money and too many buses at one time being sold. Buyers market not sellers. The split bug and ovals were also low. Money is losing value so these cars are good to buy they are well made. I got a custom 63 split bug not for sale i love it my way. Thanks

Nearly all of those Buses at both auctions are Brazilian. The fit and finish of an original Brazilian vs an original German is quite different. I was at Barrett Jackson and if I’m honest there wasn’t a Bus there that I’d care to own. I wonder if this influx of cobbled together Brazilian buses has hurt the value of German ones.
Custom cars are always a risk. You’d have to find someone with the same taste you had when building that and again, at Barrett Jackson there wasn’t one custom vw outside of the Notch I’d care to have. Weird ride heights late model cars with wide white walls , 1989 style velour interiors , etc.
Late model cars are finally starting to be recognized. For years they were the red headed stepchild of the VW scene and from 1974 on, sales in the USA were down so there are less of them around. Convertibles have always been popular but a later model sedan in excellent condition that hasn’t been messed with is not easy to find. I think those will continue to do well.
Unless you're just in it to make money, low prices on classic cars is great news for car people.
How about people quit collecting cars as investments? Buy, love, enjoy and drive.

Incorrect muffler on the 79 Vert. Engine needs detailed. Hate to pic nits but for 70 large, come on!
Old VWs will retain their "cute" iconic status to the average person, unlike a lot of other collectible cars which mostly appeal to sentimental boomers. Collectors drove the price up too much recently, but their value won't peter out completely ever.

You totally can't compare auction prices to just people selling they're vw, aution cars are bought by people with a lot of money, and will pay any price if they want it bad enough. It is ruining the normal guy vw resale market, I don't like these car auctions they and ebay and UA-cam are ruining this vw hobby that I have been into since 1980!!! 🤨
