Fantastic video Phillip. Don't be ashamed of your old mistakes, they are what makes you who you are today. Also you're doing a service to a lot of people by being vulnerable and touch on topics you don't think about. Theres almost 30000 people following you, odds are your story is gonna help at least one person and that to me is massive. Big ups and wish you all the success in the world brother.
Thank you for making this video, I recently started collecting, and Surging Sparks is my first attempt at a Master Set. It has been giving me a lot of anxiety with costs for collecting future sets
Phil your honesty is so appreciated brother! I personally went through the wringer with Pokémon cards bringing me out of a hole. You definitely weren’t the only one buying cards on buy now pay later, or spending when you shouldn’t. I think we all struggle with that in our own capacity and your honesty is beautiful man. You are very relatable and genuine!
Phil, I will never tire of you talking about collecting on a budget. This was a good refresher for myself, to stop feeling the FOMO because I'm endlessly comparing myself to others. People who are getting into this hobby because of Pocket TCG and Surging Sparks desperately NEED to hear this advice and take it seriously. Yes, it can be an investment. But the joy comes from the collecting too. You gotta balance up those aspects of you will find this an empty act of consumerism.
Great advice, bud. I'm 2 cards away from my Steller Crown master set, but I've pumped the brakes on that and Surging Sparks to look back at expansions I've previously missed that are more coste effective right now. Vivid isn't the best set, but it's pretty cheap right now and I can enjoy mastering that set while this crazy price booms passes by. You don't have to let the FOMO into your wallet.
Haven’t watched the whole video but just give up opening packs 😂 I started buying singles years ago and it’s saved me a ton! As for top loaders and sleeves just use Temu 😃
I think budgeting between a low cost and high cost hobby is super important, you hit the nail on the head. I play baseball (cheap), watch shows & animes (cheap), and collect TCGs (billions) 😂
Spot on Phil! It's something that doesn't get talked about enough, but ripping packs is gambling! And it's far too easy to become addicted! When you get those hits, gives you a nice dopamine rush. Or when you don't get any hits and you think, "just a few more packs and I'll get something". Add to that the financial stakes if you're dropping large amounts of money on product looking for returns.
I have enjoyed collecting sealed Pokemon products for years and really enjoy it. While I do enjoy it other matters in life always come first, finances, family, medical, etc. As far as other hobbies I enjoy playing electric guitar and bass. which I also have done for years. All your points are spot on.
The upfront cost is so real. When I got back into the hobby earlier this year I spent quite a bit getting all the protectors for my cards and then one PSA 10 that I really wanted. All my other cards are just in binders as I can't afford everything in a PSA10. At first I was disappointed with that but then I really got to enjoy my top loader binder. I love how the cards look and feel in it despite knowing they have lower market value. Since switching to that I am spending within my budget, selling my old stock that I don't want to keep for myself, and still getting some awesome cards that I want. Another thing I did was pick my top 10 favorites and I only collect those characters.
Great tips!! Even after years of collecting, I still need reminders like these. I've definitely fallen for everything you mentioned-overspending, rushing to build my collection, and ending up burnt out. With all the excitement these days, it's so easy to get caught up and overspend just to grab as much product as possible. This advice is so important-thanks for sharing!
I know you have discussed this topic many times but I think it’s always important to reiterate these lessons especially when some of the viewers haven’t been on the channel long enough to have seen your other videos on this topic. I hate seeing people brag about how large their collection has become after pouring so much money in the hobby for a few short months. Ever since I started controlling my spending on this hobby and making goals, it has made it more enjoyable as now I don’t feel my collections success came from overspending. Love the content as always.
Thanks for the share mate! Can relate! I had a level of addiction on the chase, however I’ve stopped and it’s been a good 6 months since I’ve stopped the chase. It was impacting my family….
Thanks for the great advice! It's a slippery slope, especially as someone who sold away a portion of my childhood collection and felt guilty for a time. Gotta pace yourself no matter what
This video really resonated with me. Thank you for this! I started collecting 3 months ago and have already had a very similar experience to your Diderot example. A pretty collection is cool, but not so much when it becomes a financial hindrance to other aspects of our lives
06:52 I come from Slovakia. We are actually exactly in the middle of Europe, but also a part of the Eastern Europe (previously eastern Block). I can see the twist in neighbours' languages. In our country we say: Still (Silent?) water washes the shores, so I think you got it perfectly. Thanks for the vod. I started one month ago and I try to stay low budget. Pardon my English :D
I got back into collecting about 3 months ago and definitely have experienced quite a bit of everything in this video. All of your content is great! Do you have a discord for the channel for followers to communicate as well?
Hey Phil. Found your channel a few weeks ago now that im getting back into the hobby. I really appreciate how transparent you are about collecting pokemon and aren't just all about the hype that comes with it. I recently finished Happy Money by Ken Honda to help me see investing, collecting, and budgeting in a different way. Do you have any other book recommendations by chance? Thanks!
@ the only advantage to ripping packs to me is getting the commons/uncommons/rares and reverse holos. I’ve seen several people online calculate for each set at what point to stop ripping and just buy what you need
@lukas3449 Yeah, I'm having a hard time thinking the price is going to drop because supply is low and demand is so high. As well as it's the #2 chase card for the set and links up to the Latios IR. Thanks for the comments.
@mikemike7263 Thanks for the advice, I think I'm gunna hold onto it because imo it's gunna go up in demand. Not many being sold either due to the hard pull rates and it being the #2 most desirable card from the set.
I think YT can be a big issue combining both 2 + 5. So many content creators seeing if they can complete mastersets sometimes even before the official release date. Watching too much can give you the impression it's normal to have the masterset done within a week or two of release.
I open to finish the number sets and collect illustrations I pack. Keep one booster box per set in 10 years that's gonna be 15k min hopefully with average of each box being 200 each hopefully in 10 years some of then can reach there own amounts. I want to gwt into grading cards but from the uk so pricing just don't make sense

As someone who has just returned to this hobby, I've been spending waaay too much 😱
Bro same🤣
same, fucked up my budget lmao. hopefully we can learn from it
Same bro, same
I've gotten great pulls had a lot of fun... now what
Opening or investing ? Just only buy around msrp then u cant lose a lot
Ah yes the benefits of subbing to someone from Australia, early morning uploads. 😌
Lol
I look forward to these now with my cup of joe ☕️
Bruh for real I subscribe to him n the homie that be in the Toyota shirt😅🥷🏽🃏
Thank you for making this video, I recently started collecting, and Surging Sparks is my first attempt at a Master Set. It has been giving me a lot of anxiety with costs for collecting future sets
🎉🎉🎉
You can buy cards in other language than exnglish. For example I buy single cards from 151 Japanese. That saved me a lot of money.
For collection not investing its cheaper AND better

I’ll be honest: the psychology was NOT what I expected when I clicked in this video… but I loved it 😊 Thanks for the video!
Man I love the forthrightness! Thank you for your honesty and openness. You’re the man.

Hobbies are so important with mental health, relationships, all around enjoyment for life. Another great video brotha!
Simple. Collect AR’s in Japanese & SIR/Alt Arts in S-Chinese. If all you care about is the artworks

Great stuff as always, the last point especially. It can be tough but with consistency it’s definitely possible 👍

so grateful I've came across your channel as I've been just getting into Pokémon Cards again recently🙏
Thanks for the share mate! Can relate!
I had a level of addiction on the chase, however I’ve stopped and it’s been a good 6 months since I’ve stopped the chase. It was impacting my family….
Just getting back into and appreciate all the information you are dropping for the newbies. Keep up the great content man!
I feel I saw it already but it's still nice to rewind that things from time to time :D
But what if Im doing my other hobby and miss the next Prismatic preorder drop 😂 the fomos real
Thanks for the great advice! It's a slippery slope, especially as someone who sold away a portion of my childhood collection and felt guilty for a time. Gotta pace yourself no matter what
It’s actually so nice that the bike can pull back the seat 👀 that’s usually an issue for me
This video really resonated with me. Thank you for this! I started collecting 3 months ago and have already had a very similar experience to your Diderot example. A pretty collection is cool, but not so much when it becomes a financial hindrance to other aspects of our lives
Love the content! Favourite channel out here 👌
Just got back into collecting about a month ago and I have spent way more than I should have, appreciate the tips!

English is good, don't worry 😊
I appreciate these videos. They reel me back in when I have a shopping cart full of pokemon I can't afford! Lol.
Phillip with the sleeper build on point 👌
I love the honesty and I have done this in my life as well
Another top tier vid Phil! Keep em comin 🤩
Found your channel recently the videos are great, thank you.
can you please give examples for set collection goals? there are a lot of cards beyond the base set...
What tool do you use for the production of your videos?
I got back into collecting about 3 months ago and definitely have experienced quite a bit of everything in this video. All of your content is great! Do you have a discord for the channel for followers to communicate as well?
Its really easy to fall into a hole when it comes to collecting, great job with these tips.
I needed to hear this. Thank you 🙏
Amazing words of wisdom. Thank you man!

Great advice 👍came back recently and I’ve been enjoying all the new sets. I want everything 😭 but I’m trying to set a mini goal to not be overwhelmed
This is why I’m subbed
I’ve recently gotten back into the hobby and I’m shocked with how expensive it can get. Opening packs is fun, but the return on the costs isn’t there
WhatNot and single hunting is where it’s at if you ask me. I’m moving farther and farther away from pack ripping and focusing my efforts on that.
@ the only advantage to ripping packs to me is getting the commons/uncommons/rares and reverse holos. I’ve seen several people online calculate for each set at what point to stop ripping and just buy what you need
I like wine, good Michelin star food, golf and collecting art… beside of Pokémon cards.
😪😅
Morning, Any advice on selling or holding the Latias SIR from Surging Sparks? I can sell instantly on TCG for 199.99. Thanks
I would honestly just hold for couple times if you don't need money right now
It depends if u need the money, I think it's gonna fall in price.
Yeah the price is probably going to go down for a while but eventually it will go back up and in a couple years it will be worth more imo
@lukas3449 Yeah, I'm having a hard time thinking the price is going to drop because supply is low and demand is so high. As well as it's the #2 chase card for the set and links up to the Latios IR. Thanks for the comments.

Wallet fatigue has def set in hard.

My local store put a limit of one per customer
Thank you for your wisdom again 🙏
Surging Sparks more like Surging Farts
Evolving skies was called evolving cries
Yep, 40 boosters already opened and no even one SIR, barerly one IR actually
@@zphyr3737 But what do you mean, all these Poke UA-camrs are pulling SIRS every pack! lol
@@7unforgiven7 like phillip said thats just people uploading their best moments

Thank god kept buying pokemon. Invest life is too good
Do you keep your best cards in a high-end folder or toploader?
Dont put all your money on pokemon guys, you need to buy some present for your family and friends .. 🎄
❤❤❤
