Kennedy Walker I do a little bit of course because everyone makes mistakes but... This isn't fair. While some other women out there who did horrible things because the world was so unkind to them are being executed or sitting in real prison, these women just get no punishment for their actions. I forget what her name was but there was a serial killer and she was a prostitute, that already tells you life is very hard and degrading for her. She would kill a lot of men that were unlucky enough to find her and there must be a reason. She hated men, was sexually abused at a young age and she was still being used as an adult. She was in prison and then executed and I think she was hurting inside more than all of these women, I think she also cried.
Marla Nicole I understand all you are saying just reading your comment hurts me but I honestly do not agree that when someone was raped or in any other form sexually molested that you would turn to the same thing that hurts you. I was molested and I don't prostitute myself. Actually I hate men and i dont find sex exciting i actually would prefer being a man. so dont blame what happened to you in your pass for what you eventually become. what i strongly believe is that you the individual that was hurt should deal with the issue and let others know about what you went through and pray pray and cry cry and hope for the best
This might just be the most positive prison program I have ever seen. Unless they're all faking it, they seem truly excited, encouraged, and most importantly happy by doing this. Good on you Brazil. Stay awesome. I can only hope that here in the States, where we have an obscene amount of incarcerated people, that we get it together the way they have here. Addendum: I'm not saying this prison is perfect, because I'm sure there's some bad stuff we didn't see in this video. Jail is jail after all. But this was a really positive and beautiful thing.
Bianca Zinini met many women. I am jealous, but thankful for watching this video. (4:25) Ana Paula : "Even though we are in here (prison), we are still worth something." (7:03) Maria Immaculada Rodriguez Clemente: "I will get out of here even stronger, better and more beautiful." (8:25) Bianca Cristina de Jesus Oliveira: "When I get out, I will do things differently. I will show my improvements." (10:25) Falida, from Sweden: "Just because maybe you've done something bad, you don't have to be a bad person." (13:06) Nairajane de Lacerda Quieroz: "My mom, she's everything. Everything, in good or bad times, through challenges. I thank God for the mother I have. She is wonderful, she is my warrior." (16:44) Falida: "I think I have a lot of charisma, I have intelligence. I think I have beauty on the inside, and the outside." This video was beautiful. These are just highlights of some of my favorite quotes to look back upon. Thank you.
And don't forget at 17:00 "There's no ugly woman, there's only mistreated woman" HAHAHAHA the absolute state of alternative reality some people operate on. Victim mentality. If they're "mistreated" someone else has to be the oppressor, and if the woman are mistreated, by implication it had to be the men "mistreating" them. MINDBLOWING, the level of poisonous psychological manipulation these convicted criminals still cling to after their life outside to the point of denying reality to avoid taking responsibility of their own actions like any mentally healthy adult. Let's hope they get psychologically reformed before the end of their sentences otherwise these predatorial manipulative woman will end up ruining their lives again or any man they associate themselves with.

I worked as a nurse in prison, for 1 year ! All the inmates want is to be treated like humans. Giving these ladies the chance to feel beautiful, and to be regular girls at least for 1 night does more than you can ever imagine! It gives them hope, and the strength to keep going! Xoxoxooxo
Musa Yobabydaddy you mean THEIR victims? People go to prison for various reasons, and most of these girls are there for smuggling drugs if you saw the entire video. I am not justifying their bad actions and what got them there in the first place. However, I do believe that if you make a mistake you pay for it, and have all the right to rectify those mistakes and live a decent life. I am no one to judge, nor am I excusing the reason why they ended up there. Everyone deserves a second chance in life, even if you pay lifetime in prison you can rectify your mistakes and positively impact society within the prison system.

Brazil's prisons are a cesspool of violence and human rights abuses. I found it ironic that this prison is also located in Carandiru.
I'm brazilian and I work at the prision system. Caradiru is a male prision, you CAN'T compare a male and a female prision in brasil. male system is ugly, smells death, but female is better and cleaner
I really liked this. I have a Justice degree (criminology major), so it was interesting to me how this pageant is used as a form of both mental health program of sorts and rehabilitation. Women in prison are most often inmates as a result of being a victim of abuse (physical, mental, sexual) and more often than not just need to regain their confidence, so they don't fall back into it after release. Thank you for sharing!
With lots of diversity in color, gender, body size and beauty. I love this kind! I never knew they had this in prison. Made the ladies feel beautiful while being deprived of freedom.

Anyone else think that people shouldn't be given long sentences for trafficking if they only attempted to traffic drugs because of the desperate situation they were in?
I agree with you, living in a third world´s economic situation where there are just no job opportunities but you have to fulfill the same necessities as everyone else is tough..
The sad thing is the people that cost society the most money through insurance fraud, bank constructions and all other monetary scams never get caught and if they do they only get a lighter sentence especially as 'first time offenders' even though they've been stealing other people's money for almost a lifetime. I bet that if you would give all these women some of that fraud money and say: you can make a better life for yourself with this check, they would start companies employing other people and especially women in the same position whilst taking great care of their families. I would put my hand in a fire pit for that.
This is great. America's prison system is horrible. Locked up and throw away the key. While yes, there are MANY inmates currently who really should never leave or be reintegrated back into society, but for I'd say large majority of people, their crimes were petty, and at heart good people. Teaching them how to come back into society is so important, and I feel even more so doing things like this to keep them positive. But again, maximum security....ehh you're probably there for a reason.
Cornrows on women (full ones) always look badass. Have you seen female MMA fighters?! A lot of them wear cornrows because they don't come out easily if you get punched in the head.

this is really beautiful to watch these gorgeous women to participate in something positive, empowering, and very uplifting. I feel if the US had some sort of program that provided these feelings and encouragement in both men and women in the prison system, most would come out as changed people. Again, I am saying MOST not all.

Brazil's prisons are a cesspool of violence and human rights abuses. I found it ironic that this prison is also located in Carandiru.
It really depends on the goal you are trying to achieve by putting somebody in prison. If your only object is to punish them and make them suffer for their crime, then empowering them is the opposite of what you want to do. However, if your intention is to rehabilitate them, to turn them into well-adapted individuals who are constructive members of society and will not reoffend, then you absolutely need to give them self-esteem, optimism, and a sense of purpose. In my opinion, people who are arrested for drug trafficking, as most of these women have been, do not deserve "punishment", they need rehabilitation.
Well done to ALL! The journalist, the inmates, families and jail staff! The United States could learn a great deal from Brazil regarding the treatment of inmates! HUMANIZING gets BETTER results than DEHUMANIZING! May you all have drama free sentences and go home SOON! LOVE FROM THE U.S.!!
That's not the majority here in Brazil mostly because of the really low budget and overpopulation, but I hope this turns into an example to other prisons
Brazil is home to some of the biggest pageants in the world like Miss World and Miss Universe. Lesser known, however, is Miss Max-a beauty competition at a Sao Paolo prison.
+m Linchpin how this video related with that topic? if you want to make a video about rape why not make a video where us and nato armies raped thousands of women in iraq afgan war ?
+m Linchpin drug trafficking - which was the case with most of the women who spoke in this video - can not be compared to raping somebody. It almost feels like as if you just tried to find a reason to attack the makers of the video...
Actually, I don't. I try not to post comments before thinking. A smart phone tripod, good lighting and a reasonably smart back ground (think books that have actually been read) suffices in an emergency situation, especially for a group claiming to stand up for women. Stay in your lane (i.e. telling someone what they need is a repugnant online gesture.) a@aruytpadyugf
+m Linchpin But you're right in the sense that it only takes an smart phone to film a situation. However, if you have been a long viewer of Broadly/Vice, you'll see that using a smart phone and "a reasonably smart background" is not how they produce their quality content...

I'm supposed to be studying for finals, but instead I'm here watching a prison beauty pageant.
omg me too
LMAO THIS IS ME RIGHT NOW!!! one year on wow
Me too omg

(4:25) Ana Paula : "Even though we are in here (prison), we are still worth something."
(7:03) Maria Immaculada Rodriguez Clemente: "I will get out of here even stronger, better and more beautiful."
(8:25) Bianca Cristina de Jesus Oliveira: "When I get out, I will do things differently. I will show my improvements."
(10:25) Falida, from Sweden: "Just because maybe you've done something bad, you don't have to be a bad person."
(13:06) Nairajane de Lacerda Quieroz: "My mom, she's everything. Everything, in good or bad times, through challenges. I thank God for the mother I have. She is wonderful, she is my warrior."
(16:44) Falida: "I think I have a lot of charisma, I have intelligence. I think I have beauty on the inside, and the outside."
This video was beautiful. These are just highlights of some of my favorite quotes to look back upon. Thank you.
Thanks for reposting these quotes. Very nice!!
And don't forget at 17:00
"There's no ugly woman, there's only mistreated woman"
HAHAHAHA the absolute state of alternative reality some people operate on. Let's hope they get psychologically reformed before the end of their sentences otherwise these predatorial manipulative woman will end up ruining their lives again or any man they associate themselves with.
honestly all the contestants in the 'mister' category are A+++. especially the one with the braids like omg people shouldn't be that attractive

it's brazilian portuguese, a branch of european portuguese, totally different (because native american, african and immigrant influence) in vocab, pronunciation, grammar, sounds of words etc.
shutup just like your face
I worked as a nurse in prison, for 1 year ! All the inmates want is to be treated like humans. Giving these ladies the chance to feel beautiful, and to be regular girls at least for 1 night does more than you can ever imagine! It gives them hope, and the strength to keep going! Xoxoxooxo
WHO OR WHAT WAS THE COMMON DENOMINATOR?
Musa Yobabydaddy you mean THEIR victims?
People go to prison for various reasons, and most of these girls are there for smuggling drugs if you saw the entire video.
I am not justifying their bad actions and what got them there in the first place. However, I do believe that if you make a mistake you pay for it, and have all the right to rectify those mistakes and live a decent life. I am no one to judge, nor am I excusing the reason why they ended up there. Everyone deserves a second chance in life, even if you pay lifetime in prison you can rectify your mistakes and positively impact society within the prison system.
It's crazy that so many of them are suitcase-trafficking related. Long sentencing for non-violent drug related crimes never made sense to me
If someone in Brazil ask you to pick up a suitcase now you know what to do.
OMG this is amazing!! Giving inmates a chance to feel beautiful and good about themselves is so incredibly important.

@@rotten5911 bc most of them were forced into that situation by the conditions they found themselves in, like the lady who had to pay for her son's treatment. many of them came from poor backgrounds and had to do what it took to survive. if you don't think there's anything wrong with that, fine, but it's a pretty shitty system we live on

probably yes, sher got 7 years cause it was international drug traffic. domestic drug traffic gives you 3 years at most. but with good behaviour it can cut down to 3 years if she agrees to go back to her country.... so she probably left in 3 years

Damn that's a nice prison.
Like, seriously, it's way better than what I've seen of American prisons.
Please...you have no idea what the prison system is like in Brazil. If you would like the english version, go rent a movie called Carandiru. They responded to a riot by going in and slaughtering everyone. And why wouldn't the prisoners riot? They were stacked in cells like library books and diseases such as HIV/AIDS ran rampant without even doing an easy thing like giving them condoms. Brazil's prisons are a cesspool of violence and human rights abuses. I found it ironic that this prison is also located in Carandiru.
Trust me, they showed you what they wanted you to see.
...
I completely forgot about that
I'm brazilian and I work at the prision system.

I liked knowing this and agree, how have you been dealing with your work? If I may ask
victims of social and economic injustice too
And this, my friends, is the real miss UNIVERSE!
With lots of diversity in color, gender, body size and beauty. I love this kind! I never knew they had this in prison. Made the ladies feel beautiful while being deprived of freedom.
Brazil is seriously an amazing country. I am blown away by their culture.

In the beginning the system of Brazilian prisons was generally the best in the world but it is much more profitable for the corrupt government to make them the worst in the world. so it (good system)is only female prisons

Anyone else think that people shouldn't be given long sentences for trafficking if they only attempted to traffic drugs because of the desperate situation they were in?
but how can they prove that they did it out of circumstance?
I agree with you, living in a third world´s economic situation where there are just no job opportunities but you have to fulfill the same necessities as everyone else is tough..
Unfortunately if there wasn't the threat of long sentences more people would do it :(
The sad thing is the people that cost society the most money through insurance fraud, bank constructions and all other monetary scams never get caught and if they do they only get a lighter sentence especially as 'first time offenders' even though they've been stealing other people's money for almost a lifetime.
I bet that if you would give all these women some of that fraud money and say: you can make a better life for yourself with this check, they would start companies employing other people and especially women in the same position whilst taking great care of their families. I would put my hand in a fire pit for that.
+Alex N how exactly are they dangerous? They aren't violent criminals.
+Will Cook Couldn't agree more!!! :)
Don't you FEEL maximum security as no more than just a myth after watching this?

this is really beautiful to watch these gorgeous women to participate in something positive, empowering, and very uplifting.

MayMay But they're in prison... They should receive proper punishment for whatever they have done. Why would they deserve to feel empowered?
Sundancent Because by empowering them you can help to reduce the amount of re-offenders.
The one with the braids is so cuteeeee
Stay in your lane (i.e. telling someone what they need is a repugnant online gesture.) a@aruytpadyugf
m Linchpin well the thing is...I am not telling you what you "need". So idk where you got that conclusion from.
+m Linchpin But you're right in the sense that it only takes an smart phone to film a situation. However, if you have been a long viewer of Broadly/Vice, you'll see that using a smart phone and "a reasonably smart background" is not how they produce their quality content...
