    I heard this today. The beauty of the pain it brought to my heart stole my breath. This performance let the truth free to speak to the loss. I felt the pain in every word and note. Since we are not allowed to speak of Southern loss, it gave me pause to hear this format that eloquently tells the losing side's story.

      why aren't we allowed? slavery was a stain on what is otherwise a great country. the south were seditionist slave owners. rich white guys getting poor white guys to fight for them. there was no glory in that war at all. just misery. thanks democrats.

    The greatest performance live by a band of the rock era! Nothing comes close to The Band in the zone. A rock critic once said playing drums and singing at the same time is like flying 2 jets at once ! The late great Mr Levon Helm did both with his eyes shut ,it was so easy for him. Remarkable and extraordinary !

    After the concert, there were several songs that Scorcese wanted redone for various problems during the concert; cameras going down, etc. Everyone in the band came back to retape those songs EXCEPT LEVON. So what we're seeing of Levon in the movie is real, and this was probably the finest rendition of the song Levon ever did.

      Eric Clapton isn't good enough, he would wreck the feeling with his overplaying on his horrible thin-sounding Strat. He played badly in this very concert, until his guitar strap broke, Robbie outplayed him, and Robbie is not much of a soloist. This song will never die, so Robbie, love him or hate him, or a little of both, brother you knocked this one clean out of the park.

History is written by the side that claims victory, but remember how do you win a war against yourself? When you figure that one out then tell me who won. I grew up on the Joan Baez version. She changed some of the lyrics but made it a great song. The Band's version is also outstanding. The fact that Levon Helm is an Arkansan gives this version special meaning. The song is an anthem that brings to life what it was like in the South at the end of the Civil War.

    • @tekay44
      @tekay44 5 днів тому

      oof, she destroyed this song. folk music is best left behind. her version gave none of the pain and grit of the times. this is a masterpiece. the south had just been crushed and nerves were raw. anger ran deep. Joan's song had none of it.

    Don, this was another great selection. We really got interested in Levon Helm in the later years when he was already fighting cancer. We used to watch Don Imus, the radio jock, who was on tv, as well. He had Levon and the Band on his show quite a few times. I think this song is an American classic, too.

    I read somewhere that Levon actually hated performing this live? He didn't like the way he sounded and the Last Waltz was the last time he ever sang it live? Must have heard it differently than the rest of us? I thought it was one of his best! The Band had more talent in their pinky fingers than most groups today have! Best band ever! Not only is the song about history, it has become history itself. Some of my friends to the left of me object to it for glorifying the Confederacy, the effects of a war on a guy that worked on a railroad and went back to farming seems pretty universal to me.

    • @RockN2Country
      @RockN2Country  3 роки тому +7

      @T Smith Yeah, I knew that would be how some folks would take the song and things with a similar subject matter. I'm not one for erasing history, so things I may find objectionable I just don't repeat them. F. Scott Fitzgerald put it well when he said, "The test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposed ideas in mind at the same time and still retain the ability to function." We can listen to songs, but that doesn't mean we are agreeing with the content or looking to emulate it. That's my approach, anyway.

    According to Robbie Robertson’s autobiography, he was interested in movie scripts. He used to go buy used ones. He may have used that interest to partly inform his writing.
    I don’t remember how he met Martin Scorcesse( sp?) , who filmed The Last Waltz with 35 mm cameras, but Martin also filmed a hit Robbie had post Band years. It’s called Somewhere Down The Crazy River, and was an attempt to describe how Robbie felt about the South. Cool song.

Clearly Levon, being from the South, had a huge influence on Robbie's writing including Robbie himself saying one of his inspirations for this song was being at Levon's house and having Levon's dad say 'Robbie, one day the South will rise again' The dispute was Robbie took the sole writing credit when it should have been shared with Levon at the very least, or perhaps all the members. That's the way it was done back then, the writer got the royalties. Shame he didn't have the foresight to share equally with all 5 members. But that's history now.

    song written by Robbie Robertson and originally recorded by the Canadian-American roots rock group The Band in 1969 and released on their eponymous second album. Levon Helm provided the lead vocals. The song is a first-person narrative relating the economic and social distress experienced by the protagonist, a poor white Southerner, during the last year of the American Civil War, when George Stoneman was raiding southwest Virginia. The song appeared at number 245 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest songs of all time.
    Joan Baez's version peaked at #3 on the Hot 100 on 2 October 1971; it did likewise on the Cashbox Top 100 chart. However, on the Record World Top Singles chart for the week of September 25, 1971, the Baez single hit #1 for one week.[1]

    A lot of people single out drummers who sing and how its rare but actually there are plenty of drummers who sing - levon Helm, don henley, dave grohl ringo roger taylor phil collins, there is actually a long list. I am impressed with anyone who plays a musical instrument and sings at the same time I'm not sure drummers should be singled out for special recognition - maybe I'm wrong.

    I love it when a mainstream band puts history into a song like this. You can feel the sorrow in his voice because of how much of a connection he had with it. It’s the same thing with Johnny Cash’s God Bless Robert E. Lee and Waylon Jennings Ghost of Robert E. Lee. Those are two of my favorites besides The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down

    Robbie Robertson wrote the song for the "Band" in 1969, Joan Baez did a cover of it as well in the early 70's. Also, and I'm not being critical, but the pronunciation of Levon is just as it's spelled Le von Helm, I've heard many people pronounce as you did "La von". Levon was also in a number of movies, he was in "The Right Stuff", "Shooter" and "Coal Miners Daughter" were just a few of the more well-known films he appeared in. RIP LEVON HELM

    The Band's "Rockin' Chair" and "This Wheel's On Fire" are two more to consider by The Band. Bob Dylan had a hand in writing "This Wheel's On Fire" so it could be potentially blocked.
