Hi TH, don't you think the use of thermal vision kind of defeats the purpose of the hunting? As hunters we are "fighting" against animals. Our weapons are fireguns and theirs are their senses (eye, ear, nose) and the ability for camouflage, which we cheat using NV and Thermal devices.

For recreational purposes yes. For professional use, no. When you have to cull >300 deer each season (like several of my friends) it is an health and safety item and tool just like any trade. When you look adverse health effect of anti-social working hours, I can see no reason not to use thermals.

    Hello Thomas
Just a little question if you don’t mind
What is your personal opinion on the thumb at side on the grip of the trigger hand vs the normal grip that you teach on your videos
Personally I used the normal grip, and the technic that you teach
I see almost in every video guy’s shooting with the thumb at side, must of them don’t even know why. It’s just because everyone is doing that
Best regards from a big fan from 🇵🇹
    Keep up the good work

Unless the stock is anatomically fitted for a special thumb position, my opinion is that the "thumb on side"position is a compensation for poor trigger technique. The aim is to eliminate what proponents call "sympathetic finger movement", meaning they do not want the thumb to move and disturb the rifle when you pull the trigger. So they remove the thumb from the rifle. With proper grip and trigger technique the thumb will not move. Anatomically fitted gunstocks usually puts the thumb towards the 10 o´clock position (for example AI,GRS, Blaser or general match rifles) or more towards the 12 o'clock position (JET 01 or Spuhr rifle stock). These stocks all makes a proper grip easier to do than with general purpose hunting stocks as they are more anatomically or even individually fitted to the shooting hand. This is all good. But just putting the thumb on the side of the rifle simply because you don't have proper form is in my opinion a dead-end although the technique can produce immediate improvements to poor technique. I use Heinz Reinkemeier books as a reference as the "Olympic style match shooters" are the most technically competent shooters (bullseye equals bullet diameter) and adopt what is relevant from their techniques. ua-cam.com/video/lOKCFvId4cY/v-deo.html

@@THLR Thank you Thomas, I always learn something new on your channel.
I can confirm that, on my Blaser R8 the hand stays in a comfortable position. Almost no disturbance on the moment of the shot, while pulling the trigger

I forgot to mention the exception: F-class and benchrest shooters that control the rifle via front and rear rest (and not grip).

Hi Thomas, do you think thermal takes away the skill of observation and detection of targets ?
I have observed stalkers becoming walkers with a thermal stuck to their eye while recreational stalking.
    What are your thoughts ?

    • @THLR
      @THLR  Рік тому +1

If you start with thermal, yes clearly. I am very divided about thermal. I see what they do FOR you and I see what they do TO you. I pity the hunter who comes into stalking via thermals and not via binoculars and dogs, it's just two very different experiences and I think I would give up stalking if I had to do it via thermal. Stalking with dogs and binoculars is more an immersion in nature versus a more technical exercise in killing with a thermal. But that is my egocentric view for how I want my own recreational stalking to be. For a professional stalker it is a health & safety tool that puts your working hours into a frame that is more compatible with a good work-life balance, or for a recreational stalker it can be a good way to safeguard what is often a significant financial investment - the stalking rights. I'm not sure how I will use it myself, this is a loaner until December and I doubt I will buy one. I see that it gives me more control and reaction time for the filming in the sense that it speeds up the observation. But I was shaped as a hunter glassing plantations and clearcuts with 7x42 binoculars and shooting them with 8x56 scopes, sometimes assisted by a dog's nose and taking my cues from professional hunters. I feel that recreational hunters might shortchange themselves coming into it via thermal, but I do not know.

It's very fast, but not magic. You still need a direct line-of-sight for the reflections, but as you are not looking at longer wavelenghts than normal visible light (as with binoculars) the contrast is much bigger and much easier to see (if you have a quality thermal imager, just as with binoculars). I estimate that an area I would normally use 30 minutes glassing with binoculars is effectively searched in less than 5 minutes with thermal imaging.

Ah! We use a thermal rifle scope for predator control on the farm. I find it extremely challenging to estimate range due to the digital display and lack of depth of view.

Må bli ren tjuvjakt i tilfelle hungersnød. Elg har alltid vært "skogskua" for meg og vekker null jaktinteresse. Fremstår som mye penger/mye arbeid i forhold til opplevelsen. Men fint dyr å smyge på med unga slik at de får noen dyremøter.
