when i found this channel when i started learning guitar 4 months ago, i was like who is this dreadlocked crazy metal guy with german accent, i thought its a unique dark and heavy channel of some metal band , something like slipknot :D some time later and having watched almost every video, i have to say he is one of the most lovable, kind, smart and talented guys ive seen, you just want to hang out with him and learn everything music related, great personality, insane knowledge and talent and effective teaching methods. \m/
Hey man, been playing a while in between ruts. So started using your exercises in my regimented practice every day for the last week, and tonight when I grabbed my guitar to jam with a buddy I haven't played with in a long time I couldn't stop watching how clean my fretting is and how smooth I was picking and it felt effortless. My friend even asked what kind of crazy stuff I'd been doing to progress so much and how long its taken. Passed along the love and hopefully he will be getting lessons from the guru now as well! Thank you so much for the knowledge and love of music you share so freely.
Every week the same routine: 1) I'm not motivated to practice 😑 2) Oh look! A new Bernth Video! 3) A quick look what he shows can't hurt 🤔 4) *grabs the guitar* Fuck it let's try that! 🎸
This channel is absolutely what I needed about 3 years into my guitar playing. Even though I can shred pretty fast now, these tips and exercises are genuinely excellent even for me!
You have taught me more in this 10 minute video than anyone else in the 23 years(off and on because I couldn't find a solid instructor and gave up time and time again) I've been trying to play the guitar. Thanks and I will tell everyone about your channel
For me, simply the best guitar teacher on UA-cam. Clear and efficient advice, easy to follow, nice to watch, calm and precise in his explanations. Thanks a lot, Bernth, and keep up the great work you are doing!
What a great attitude. This is how I’ve wanted guitar lessons in the metal world to be like. Actual good advice through an experience lense. Started checking this out after my own guitar journey took me from self taught to finally classical training. Now I can take my fundamentals and love of metal to improve them both. Got your lessons and enjoy these videos so much. Studying and practicing hard so I can improve my playing and get out there and play with other talented individuals. KEEP PRACTICING! :D
What I find most amazing is that he can show the bad technicks as well. My guitar teacher knew what a bad technick would look like, but could never show, cuz he outrained them. I'm kind of suffering the same teaching my friend on a basic level. Bernth is the teacher we all need!
I'm from Malaysia.. Self taught.. And that first exercise did get me at first but after the third try i got it fully under control.. And its all thanks to your other video.. The one where you teach us to do the chromatic as warm up but keep the fingers pressed against the fretboards.. Honestly my skills rapidly grows everyday thanks to your videos.. Thank you so so much! Much love and support from Malaysia! 🇲🇾❤️❤️❤️ Kompomist!
I think we can all agree that at some point, we watched a recently uploaded BERNTH video and got us playing the guitar again! Thank you for your content Bernth!
After searching and trying different techniques I stumbled across this one. I began trying this and it felt like I just couldn't do this. After really focusing and trying and failing for like 5-10 minutes I finally started noticing progress! I took lessons for about 2 years and I never learned how to properly play without my fingers flailing all over the place. I think if I practice this on a regular daily basis I will have more control over my fingers. I'm seriously considering the 10 week shredding course just based on the fact that I'm seeing results from this exercise already. Glad I found this!
You channel has the answers to every question I have. I wanted to learn how to play faster and found your video on how to quickly build playing speed, but I couldn't play the exercise very fast without getting very sloppy because I couldn't keep my fingers near the fretboard. I searched how to solve my new problem and turns out you have a video for this too! I hope you know that your videos are an incredible resource and that you are a great teacher that really understands the problems beginners might be facing.
I never comment anything on videos on youtube, but I really need to say something about this video and also this guy. This exercise works 100%. Just go ahead and do it. I used to struggle with this 'finger distance problem', it was something that bothered me so much. I put this exercise in my daily routine and I noticed a HUGE improvement. I started practicing guitar 2 months ago and this guy lessons are helping me a lot. Thank you so much, Bernth. Cheers from Brazil!
Oh Bernth, what have you done to the guitar community out there? :) I bet the majority of people trying your exercise have leveled up their playing skill by at least a few % and this is huge. I'm a self learner for 5 years now and only a few weeks ago I've started to focus on finger independence exercises and have to admit I should have done it from the first day. This exercise of yours is simply pure gold, one of a kind that challenges you up to a point where shredding becomes a pleasure. I would strongly recommend everyone to try it out, it's pure magic. Later update: Bernth, I can't thank you enough for this!!! I've been doing these exercises for the past few days and I simply can't believe how my left hand has changed. I have finally unlocked my fingers, unbelievable. Can't wait to check you picking exercises, my right hand needs a tweak as well.
Even if I don't like metal this channel is really good. Bernth is an excellent teacher, calm, clear and (Germany) precise! Thanks for another great lesson!
OMG...Bernth, you are so right...with that first exercise, my fingers were coming off the fretboard just exactly like you said they would...great lesson bro... I got lots of work to do!!!!
This is what I love about your videos, The detail is everything, things I've never through about until you talked about them, I love you and hate you at the same time hahaha great work Bernth and thanks for going through the effort. What helped me with this exercise and ultimately getting my pinkie to stay low was practicing two notes per string with my 3rd and 4th fingers on all 6/7/8 strings.
started playing on the electro guitar 1,5 month ago and your videos have helped me and still helps. Also I improved some skills because of your videos. Huge thank you Bernth 😊
Dude you seriously make the best guitar learning content that I've come across thus far. I still consider myself a beginner, but it's like you're reading my mind and giving me the exact thing I need. I'm focusing heavily on just the mechanical issues I see when I play, but the way you just added in the "But you still need to be able to make it musical" at the end jew sewed so many aspects of the guitar together for me. What also helped was thinking of different musical phrase rhythms as sentences stitched guitar put me onto that one. Once I add this to my continuously developing routine and I'll put it in the Facebook group and tag you so everyone can look it over. Thanks Bernth you Fricken rock bro 🤙🌀🏄♂️ (edit) Komponist cuz I got to excited to comment on the video before I finished it, and you don't do that in every video so I wasn't sure if there'd be one lol
This topic is under rated and so worthwhile to advance skill. I am self taught and have focused on this technique, finger isolation and control from the beginning, keeping fingers always in position and on the fretboard. I’m a better guitarist because of it, and preach it all the time. Still have work, but 4 years in and we’ll on my way at this point.
I just signed up. My playing has been in the proverbial rut and stagnant since I got back into playing last xmas after 3yrs off and some regimented exercises should really help. appreciate ya
I blame growing up play Kirk Hammett stuff for my pinky, when i watched him live when i was younger his pinky really flys around and i thought that was the way.
This video is perfect for me. I have recently already started implementing similar techniques suggested by my buddy who absolutely shreds. I appreciate your content and mannerisms.
Thanks for all the videos. I have joined your Patreon as I want to move on from playing the same old riffs all the time. I am starting to practice in a structured way for the first time.

This really made my hands sore the first few times trying it. But it helped me realize economy of motion works for chords as well. Definitely eye opening thank you!
I'm really looking forward to going through these exercises; I've been trying to 'tame my pinky' for a bit. Here's another good way to see what you're pinky does: starting on low E string, use the first three fingers to do triplets (say, at frets 5, 6, 7) and move up to the high E string and back down. My pinky just spazzes and sticks way out. Uhg. Edit: Oh, yeah, and to strenghten the pinky and ring finger, I sometime do the same thing but with the middle, ring, and pinky finger. My exercizes aren't very inventive, like Bernth's. I guess I should think more like a Komponist, eh? 😀
i had prior experience on guitar like 17yrs ago lol but it really didnt stick, probably cause of college and life.. but now that i am starting again, for real this time lol.. your videos are of huge help! glad your channel came up on my recommended 😊

Bernth, you are amazing my friend. I love these exercises. I need your lessons. I want to play faster, but my 58 yr old hands are a little weak right now. I have to start slowly. I need more confidence in my abilities. I can do all the movements but after that I don't know where to go. Hehehe 😉 .
Lol the way you played it @ 2:38 is pretty much how i play....when i got into guitar I had no rules, no knowledge of any "technical" things about guitar or music in general. I just was good by naturally hearing something and being able to sound it out within a few minutes and i could play it by ear. So through the years i would just play covers of my favorite parts in songs and i learned a little bit by getting into the minds of the players and some of the techniques used by them. But ive never had an experienced guitar player to watch/see how i play and tell me all the things i need to work on. But 1 thing i realize is i tend not to use the 3 finger method of playing, which i think is better for me to try and learn to help when playing solos faster and smoother because i mainly use my pointer and pinky instead of just going down the fingers in order to have better hand control and better access to the higher frets, quicker than how I play it. (Sorry if this was confusing, i tried to explain it the best way I could)
Good video I also try these patterns while standing up. And I have a tendency to press the strings with way too effort. You're definitely on points dead center
excellent as always! I was quite surprised that my hand was pretty close to the fretboard on these exercises. I think it is because I'm doing Bernth's spider exercises every day now for about a month or so. anyone who is interested Bernth published it on 17.2.21
I love your over the top wrong examples of flying pinky at exercise #1, but hey what Played this first time only to see the finger taking off the flight 😂 GJ with the exercises
I think I heard Michael Angelo Batio talking about this a couple of times. I think he calls it economy of motion. And it definitely makes one hell of a difference when it comes to dexterity and speed.
