AS A UH-1D (B205) AND B212 PILOT (with 1200 hours in the first and 500 hours in the second type mentioned above), currently flying at Hellenic Air Force in Search and Rescue operations I HAVE TO SAY THIS: The Uh-1d flight model in DCS is realistically 10-25% more difficult than the real thing. And I am being over generous here. First of all, the DCS model is much more unstable than the real thing. Second, I noticed a Uh-1 tendency to pitch up with application of power and pitch down when you decrease collective. That doesn’t happen. Like at all. Also I noticed that once you shut down fuel (from the switch NOT the throttle), the engine shuts down immediately, when in fact it still runs for about 1-2 minutes burning trapped fuel in the pipeline. Also the the overtorque behavior isn’t just right. The beacon light effect in the cockpit (that makes the whole pc screen flash!!!) is ridiculously wrong and you don’t have to fly one to know it. However, the sound is pretty damn close. The cockpit wobbling effect due to start up, shut down and while crossing transnational speed, is perfect! And the “trimmer” is function is BY FAR the best idea to bypass the fact that Huey’s don’t have a fixed center (per say) while gamer joysticks do. I do enjoy this UH-1H simulation. But it has too damn aggravated instability effects, TO THE POINT THAT ME AND MY COLLEAGUES can fly the real thing, but can’t fly this simulation. It is that bad. That aggravated. And it is a shame. Ps: If you can fly the DCS Huey model, I guarantee that you can fly the real one. You need to study of course. And practice using the reality factors (dead man curves and all) but you will probably pass the first hover class pretty damn fast...
I agree. I'm a commercial helicopter pilot, with military background. I have flown 7 types of helicopters, including the B412. At this moment I'm flying the AW139. I find the flight model really weird. It's so difficult to fly and unrealistic that I gave up. I love flying helicopters but this uh-1 is a pitty.
29:44 Once you know how to fly. Props for keeping that in CAP. They do get easier quick. I remember back in 2009 I could not get over the mountains in one of the early missions for the Black Shark. WTF. Roll down the mountain. Try again. Tray again. Wait. Snow. Altitude. Hey look at that. Blade de-icing switches...... WOOT. Promptly got shot down on the other side. Small steps....
And sadly multicrew was promised from the start/release of the module but is not delivered until now. There are quite some extensive discussion going in the dcs forums.
For me, the Huey is the most enjoyable helicopter to land with. The mi8 is the most enjoyable to fly with...and the KA50 the most enjoyable to pew-pew with.
Really my favorite module TO FLY in DCS. It's way more of an art than any fixed wing, and trimmimg the tree tops is so satisfying. Just watch out for wires.
There have been several bugs over the last 3 years I have flown it, gunners stoped working, sling loads went to space, many changes/ upgrades didn't work with the original missions/campaigns and every now and then something stops working with a new pach (but thats just DCS I guess). So its not perfect BUT they are still very much supporting this module and problems gets fixed.
History: It took them over 6 years to get the AI controlled aircraft door gunners to fire back/return fire! There were many asking for this and myself included but they took their sweet arse time to fix it They still haven't fixed the nav and beacon lights showing through the cockpit yet
Yep. We until very recently had shadow bugs from the interior cockpit panels (the switches would cast shadows but not the panels they're attached to). And we spent most of last year with an engine way too sensitive to temperature. (Probably still is but it's better than it was where if you went one second over the recommended temp/time limits the engine instantly caught fire and died.) It's finally in good shape again though, except for those damn lights shining through.
Heey Cap. I did as you suggested and bought the Huey this saturday and i having sooo much fun with it :) First night flying i crashed like 50 times on landing and i couldent even take off without crashing haha but now it's getting better and better. I still cant hover but sooner or later i will get there as well. Iam not gone fly another helicopter until i'am getting really good with the Huey. Thnx for the advice to begin with this one cause its really gone help me with the others later on :)
I brought this in early access thinking it would fly like the KA-50. Boy I was WRONG 😤 Difficulty 5. It got very little use until recently now I have rudder pedals couldn’t fly it with a twist rudder. I’m still very much learning how to fly it but really enjoying it now. Still can’t hover it very well but at least I can land it now with out killing everyone. 👍🏻👍🏻🙃🙃
I see this is another aircraft with high "diffictulty". :) Mistakes aside, it's a great review Cap, along with the others you've done. Good content for the community and I am sure folks agree that this is a great contribution.
@@sahhull I guess you don't know how to read. Look carefully at how I spelled it, which is the same way Cap mispelled it in the video. I fly Helicopters IRL. I'm well aware of how they behave. Thank you for the tips however.

this video was so funny. I have watched every single hornet tutorial video of yours over the past week, as a new DCS player, it helped a lot...but DCS combat itself, is so unforgiving...haha, love this game.
I bought this in the last sale. Just started flying it today. Coming from a micro CP RC heli background after getting the bindings sorted I got flying about pretty easily. Felt like a boss when I landed it first try after going treetop height down the Vegas Strip. Not so much when I fumbled the trim switch at the worst time after flying back to base and popped the rotor off.
The gunnery would have been much better/informative if done at typical Vietnam ranges, like we see in movies and real footage - but it clearly brings out your inner child. :-) . Anyway another useful review, thank you.
In new to DCS and your videos have been a HUUUGGGEE help but I do have one question before I buy this module. Can I make flying it work with joystick and keyboard? I have a joystick but not enough money for throttle and pedals as I’m just starting out but reallly want to fly helicopters.
I don't fly helos, i fear them and i don't understand them.....but i wanted to have and try out one, just one in DCS and i chose this one.....why? Because i love the smell of napalm in the morning.....it smells like.....victory......that's why! ;P
A number of us bought the Huey on summer sale. After a few crashes we all could fly it towards a target and shoot things. Then we created a Vietnam like mission with Mig 15's, A4's and Hueys. Right after that we added Ride of the Valkyries and some CCR music for background. Great fun ... just needed to find Robert Duval line from the move and we would be all set. Grim is right just a blast to play!
I love these DCS tutorials. But would you guys that do them in VR PLEASE STOP MOVING YOUR HEADS ALL OVER THE PLACE! It ruined another great review, now I’m going to puke from motion sickness.

You should get in touch with ED and see if they can adjust the flight module
Is this all fixed yet? Thinking about getting it.
