BEFORE SUNSET is even better, the summit of the "Before" trilogy. BEFORE SUNRISE is amazing. But BEFORE SUNSET is to BEFORE SUNRISE as THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK is to A NEW HOPE.

Loved this watchalong with you, seriously, it was wonderful.
The phenomenally beautiful thing about watching this gem when it came out was that there was no such thing as a sequel, at least not the way it is today. A sequel was almost like a four-letter word. What you were watching as the minutes went by, everyone in the audience was just smiling, because you were watching this and it alone; you were never going to get this kind of magic again. There was no duology to be had, no concept of a trilogy, and for many years it was just this special film.
I actually liked seeing you check out this other kind of genre and hope you do it more often.

100%!!! Still one of my all time faves...and part of the beauty was never knowing what happened so just left to our imagination. Pessimists would say they never saw each other again...and romantics would say otherwise. Beautiful. But as we know now, sequels happened and we do find out what happened. Either way, great trilogy but nothing compares to the conversations in this original film.

Oh, man, this is a rabbit hole... I happened to have seen each film, when released, at roughly the same age as Jesse and Celine each time. It's like catching up with old friends every 9 years or so (and freaking out in the meantime through not knowing what's happening with them). There's technically a 4th installment, a segment of the film Waking Life, which I guess would be set between Sunrise and Sunset, but it's not canon. A couple of years ago I recreated Sunset (my favourite of the three) with a planned walk through Paris. Sunset and Midnight were co-written by Hawke and Delpy, who included a lot of their real lives in the characters' concerns. And Julie Delpy starred in, wrote and directed "Two Days in New York" and "Two Days in Paris", similar in tone to the Befores, but not as good. I NEED PART FOUR!!!

The poetry in this trilogy is so real, so not abstract. _Before Sunset_ is my personal favourite, but I don't want to do that thing where I state my preference as objective fact. Bottom line: this trilogy is so beautiful, an exploration of how the old world meets the new world, of half a lifetime and a mutual dream of connection, a conflict of romance and reality and the attempt to balance the two.

I was 40 when I fell in love years after I saw it. The ending is sad but I didn’t want a sappy ending where it didn’t change who they where. I rarely write in German but I couldn’t describe all the emotions in English I had upon seeing it again. It doesn’t follow the plot of a conventional love story and it wasn’t meant to be one.

I've met both Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke here in San Francisco, tho' on separate occasions.
Julie Delpy was here for the premier of "Before Midnight" (the 3rd movie), and I'd bought the "VIP" tickets to meet her and Linklater at a club after the movie.
Both were swamped with people trying to talk to them, so I waited awhile. I'd always had a bit of a crush on Julie Delpy (who wouldn't? ;-) ), so I was looking forward to talking to her, even if just to say I loved her movies. Anyway, a guy who was also there - a young aspiring film-maker - wanted to talk to her as well, but he told me he was terrified of it. So when Ms Delpy was done talking to the last bunch of people, I tapped her gently on the shoulder, and she turned around smiling (tho' looking a little exhausted from talking, I guess), and I said "Excuse me, Miss Delpy, but my friend here would love to talk to you" and pulled him forward. So I didn't really get to talk to her, but at least I helped someone :-D (after talking to him, she plopped down on the couch looking REALLY exhausted - I think he talked a bit too much).
I met Ethan Hawke when he was at a local bookstore, signing copies of a book he'd written. Just told him I liked his work, etc.

Great reaction to one of my all time favorite movies. I hope you react to the rest of the trilogy. Bit of trivia, from the conversation at the end, this movie took place on June 16th. That is a famous date in literature from the book Ulysses by James Joyce. That book is also set on June 16th and the main character is just walking around Dublin all day & night.

Cristy: "They don''t have their numbers or their emails or anything...."
No cellphones. No emails. I mean, some people had these things by that point (1995) but they were not common by any stretch of the imagination. They'd have had to exchange physical addresses and home phone numbers....which people absolutely did but, realistically, the chances that anything could be maintained via the occasional letter or VERY expensive overseas phone call.....?

Lovely reaction - I saw this when it came out, around their age, also traveling Europe; the immediacy of this film had a big impact on me, esp in those years - Linklater's made many films showing life unspooling in these little moments, where we go on a journey that feels like one of these modern novels - besides this trilogy, also see Slacker, Waking Life, Scanner Darkly, Boyhood, Where'd You Go Bernadette - some other romantic classics include Casablanca, La Jetee, Vertigo, In the Mood for Love

Before Sunrise and Before Sunset is everything. I watched them like 8 years ago and I always wanted an experience like it. Fast Forward 7 years later, summer 2023 I had something similar happen to me when I was visiting my family in Italia. I met an Italian woman at a beach bar in Francavilla al mare. I am a third generation Italian; my Italian wasn't great. I heard her say something to her friend in English, so I went and talked to her. We talked all night and had wine on the beach until morning. I do shift work as an underground miner in Canada. I work 11 days on followed by 11 days off. I always fly home to her (Umbria) after my shift. We just found out that we are expecting a baby by November 2024. Crazy, but I like to think I defs had a Before Sunrise experience. What's the trick? go to Europe LOL

For me, Sunset > Midnight > Sunrise. But I also don't put as much stock in the "new love" aspect of a romantic story. New love is easy. Sunset and Midnight deal with reality. The fact some people "hate" Midnight is why it's brilliant. Because it refuses to pretend real love is anything like a "romance."
