We are in a global loneliness epidemic. The island of Ikaria was designated a "Blue Zone" for healthy, long life partially because of their social connections. We should all aspire to live this way but in come places it's not so easy.
Loneliness is epidemic all over western civilization. I moved to a different city in my own country two years ago. I'm very talkative and always try to get opportunity to meet new people. I have not made even one fried.... It's one thing to chat for a while with the cashier at the supermarket or the staff at the pharmacy, and another thing is to make friends. Everyone seems to have their "quota" of friends already completed. Nobody seems interested in meeting new people.
It's very simple, Greeks are tribal and very communal within the Family Tribe, and it will never change! You can have acquaintances but will be invited into the tribe unless by marriage or baptism
it's wonderful to know others are going thru the same things... especially that it seems we are all the same age ... thank you so much for sharin' your experiences , feelings with us ... 🙏🏼😸👍🏼

Good question and here is the full breakdown of what the difference is: The terms expat (short for expatriate) and immigrant both describe people who live outside their native country, but they carry different connotations and are often used in different contexts: 1. Intent and Duration: Expat: Typically implies a temporary stay in another country. Expats often intend to return to their home country eventually. They may move for work, adventure, or personal reasons but often maintain strong ties to their home culture. Immigrant: Usually implies a more permanent move. Immigrants often intend to settle in the new country long-term, integrate into society, and possibly become citizens. 2. Context and Perception: Expat: Often used for professionals, retirees, or people from economically developed countries living abroad. It can carry a more privileged or transient connotation. Immigrant: Generally used for people moving from one country to another for economic, political, or social reasons, often seeking better opportunities. It can imply a journey with challenges and long-term settlement. 3. Social and Cultural Associations: Expat: May not always fully integrate into the local community, especially if they are part of an "expat community." There’s sometimes an assumption of maintaining one’s original identity and lifestyle. Immigrant: More likely to engage deeply with the local culture, with an expectation to adapt and contribute to the new society. 4. Usage and Bias: The term "expat" is sometimes criticized for being selectively applied based on nationality or race. For example, a professional from a Western country living in Greece might be called an expat, while someone from a less affluent country moving to the same place might be labeled an immigrant, regardless of their intent or situation. In summary, while both terms describe someone living outside their country of origin, "expat" often implies temporary residence and retains a sense of original identity, while "immigrant" suggests long-term integration and settlement in a new country.
Some people get angry when I use the term "expat" in my videos. They believe it reflects social class and privilege. However, I prefer using "expat" because my audience primarily consists of expatriates, and that’s the term they often search for. Personally, I have no issue identifying as an immigrant. Like many, I didn't understand the difference until I started this channel and realized that the term can trigger some reactions. Additionally, "expat" is a shorter word than "immigrant," making it more suitable for thumbnails and titles. Most viewers will understand the content without getting into political or sensitive discussions.
To me an expat is someone that lives in another country but his/her income comes from their home country. Usually people that work for a corporation in the US move to a european country for a few years working at the european branch of that company. These are the only folks that should be called expats. In other words if it wasn’t for the company they wouldn’t be relocating there even temporarily. Everyone else including retirees are immigrants. We should be mature enough to use “immigrant” for any and all people that move to another country for any reason and not worry of the negativity that comes with the term. There are many reasons why one wants to emigrate. Because they are seeking a better life than what is available to them, or because they want to live a better retirement at a warmer place, or because they want to start a business in another country, or because they met someone and want to be with them!
@@AB-jz9ns I have seen people online say that they have moved / intend to move to another country because immigration has ruined theirs. They can not even conceive that they are doing the same thing because they are "expats" not "immigrants".
