Ok. Please go out and order Nick Papademetriou's book SCARP. Where is Nick in this "middle class" discussion??? All these "talking heads" basically ripped Nick off! Also wittering females like this bourgeois person make my teeth itch. I am female by the way. Sick of so called "intellectuals"discussing genius when they actually have no clue.

Watching this reminds me of a vid I watched a while back where a Dialect Coach, for actors, was saying how the landscape affected the sound of the English language spoken by the locals. We are very much a part of the landscapes we grew up in/spend time in. How we think and how we sound.

Interesting to hear from everyone here regarding Nick and his 'deep topography', but I agree with other comments here, I really don't know what this Andrea Philips character is doing on this panel...she is obviously very condescending about the issue and about the person of Nick himself...imagine starting off the conversation about the topic saying there is a 'master and slave' dynamic between him and Will...when that is obviously not the case. Whether you value it or not, Nick is so obviously the 'shaman' of his own psychic world its ridiculous to make such a comparison. I'm glad she was put right by Will.
She is obviously just another trendy type who hitches herself to a bandwagon whilst its gaining some attention, but only really being interested in the being associated with 'names' and material benefit. I thought I did detect something of a withering note from Will in her direction at times...and he was very loyal here. The likes of Nick in their perceived 'shabby' holes know more about the wonders of the world around them than that silly cow will ever know.

@Jacqueline Filby To be honest, and having some knowledge of Nick as a character, I would not be surprised if he just didn't want to go on and was content to just let Will do the talking in this venue...which was probably a wise decision given her attitude! But yes...speaking like that about someone sitting in front of you! You can tell she is very condescending about the material and Nick himself and that it is all a bit beneath her.

Any chance of a DVD issue of the film? Would love to see it.

That's the thing with the "arts" if you are from a lower middle class, working class background sooner or later you encounter people like the interviewer who are usually from a very well educated, wealthy background. They get off on the how famous, how many other people have quoted, referenced you. The classic is those interviews where the person says "so what was it like to sell you work to Madonna" or such and such said about you that you are and so on. They can't enjoy anything, understand unless it has already been packaged for them first. Already given value by the BBC etc.

Nick sums up beautifully towards the end of this film.
"Peoples sheds decay the old tins of paint dry up, and, the wife grows a beard "...he describes these family's who have lived in London for year's, yet somehow, in the passing of time are almost oblivious to their surroundings as familiarity breeds contempt....

Fascinating. I don't agree with the host's analysis but it's interesting to hear how differently she interpreted the film to others. Great to hear from IS as always. It was JR's work that introduced me to him. So thanks John.
