LOL! It's just the overall tone of Batman Returns for me. Like, it doesn't look or feel like a continuation of the first Batman. The first film had this Art Deco meets post-war industrialism gone wrong kind of vibe throughout Gotham, and it knew when to dial down the style so as to not distract from the story and characters. With Returns, it reminds me of Edward Scissorhands in that it's all so theatrical and off-putting in how false it is. In the first film, Gotham looked like it could have been a real city; Returns looks like a set. Even outdoor scenes. Add in Christopher Walken and Danny Devito chewing every last ounce of scenery, it shares more in common with Scissorhands than Batman to me... Not to say it's a bad film. I love every scene Michael Keaton shares with Michelle Pfeiffer. That had great chemistry and strong performances that felt genuine. If the whole movie had been about them, and Catwoman trying to ruin her murderous employer by ripping him off, I would have loved it thoroughly. As it stands, it's half a good movie. Still can't touch Batman '89 for me.
@@MasterCastTV It's a tie with Batman '89 to me and definitely has a different feel and tone, that Tim Burton admitted that was intentional, I think, besides the different Gotham sets, it's more because Jack Nicholson's Joker chewing every last ounce of scenery and Kim's Vicki and Robert Wuhl's Alexander Knox so dominated Batman '89, and none of them are in Batman Returns. We know they are sets in both, by different set designers, but both have a parallel universe New York City feel. They each revolve around different areas of the city. Thanks, cap'n! Oh, if you wanna' break some controllers then B&R is the way to go. I love it, but it's a hard son-of-a-bitch! I'm kinda' surprised they're so pricey. Wasn't the game everywhere?
Not over here. Maybe in the US? Batman and Batman Returns (all versions) are really common though. Batman Forever on the Saturn is pretty rare, over 60 euro, but B&R is much more expensive (especially the Mega cd version.
Oh, no. I misread. Yeah, B&R on both Genesis and Sega CD are kinda' pricey. Almost on par with a new game. Batman Forever on Saturn is downright ridiculous. Glad I got a copy when I did. My lady spent $35 on a disc-only copy. Nowadays that can fetch you $70. WTF?! A factory sealed copy recently went for $317! My God, man. I haven't looked at prices in ages, so this is all news to me. Oh, is Technocop worth anything? (looks it up) $30?! This piece of shit rakes in MORE now?
Great overview of the batman games. Though I gota admit I actually liked Batman Forever and did beat it fully as a kid. Adventures of Batman and Robin 16 bit is my favorite overall. The action, music, and the dark cartoon its from makes it an amazing game. Some stages and bosses are impressive aswell.
My God, it's hard to imagine anyone beating Batman Forever on Genesis. Just 80 stages, man. I couldn't do it. Huge props to you. Ever play it with a buddy? B&R is awesome. There's just no other way to say it. I kinda' wish I played the SNES version, because it's a radically different game.
Master-Cast TV took me about a month to beat batman forever. I remember laughing my ass off with friends at the poor sound quality of the main menu speach. The throwable hand cuffs made the game easy, even last boss. Just forward forward C and the enemy is frozen for 4 seconds or so. I played it with a buddy a few times but the platforming made it impossible. Adventures of batman and robin is much better in coop. But the flight stages take too long to beat. The mad hatter boss is the most intence boss fight in my life.
The handcuffs, huh? I hate to admit it, though I'm curious to try it again... Damn you. LOL! Oh, fuck me sideways. The Mad Hatter was a fucking MONSTER! I couldn't beat him. In order to see more of the game, I started using the level skip code. Only going as far as the level I died at. You know, treated it like a password system. When I got to the Mad Hatter, my credits were fucking GONE! As hard as he is, the stage is gorgeous. Hahaha! I'm inclined to agree with you on that Two-Face stage. It goes on forever. I can still remember getting righteously pissed because I'd make it past a section, thinking it was the final boss, only to find more bad guys. The next time it happened, I'm like, "Oh, thank Christ it's over!" But no. There's a goddamn blimp waiting for me. Ugh! Really, fuck that level.
Master-Cast TV the trick to beating many games like this where you have 2 player coop is to enable second player before first one dies. That way in most cases you have double the lives and continues. So when you run out, just plug in a second controller and continue on as second player. I realised this when playing Xmen clone wars. I remember beating magnetto thinking he was last boss LOL was I in for a treat.
I think if snes had a cd virsion of it just like sega cd the adventures of batman and robin on snes woulda been combined with the cd virsion of the adventures of batman and robin vehicle missions to form 1 amazing batman game
Hahaha! Yeah, at a friend's house way back when. I remember liking it. If they had based it on the original comic in which Batman held a gun all the time, and actually killed his enemies on occasion, it wouldn't seem so weird.
Yep! Sorry. It was a busy year, and I was still reasonably happy with my reviews, so I re-edited them into one great big video and re-branded it with my new series: Master-Cast TV.
Pity they didn't convert Ocean Softwares Batman The Movie from the Amiga to the Mega Drive. The Batmobile sections were far more impressive, plus you had the Batcomputer puzzle section
I'm not gonna lie, when you were playing AoBnR and said the game was gonna give you a Heart Attack, I started laughing out loud!😅 I think most gamers know that feeling.
Pretty much. Really, this game had me wanting to throw the controller so many times, but it's hard to hate something that looks and sounds *that* amazing. That, and my brother telling me not to quit. Won't lie, felt a little shame. Over time I got better. You just gotta' stick with it and thrown down.
Batman Returns (cartridge) was a wasted opportunity, I was always jealous of the SNES version. The Sega CD version however, ok improved platform sections were still meh, but the 3D Driving sections just blew me away. Great video look at the games my friend.
Adventures Of Batman And Robin looks to be a case of some amazing coding routines on the Genesis, in need of a lot more playtesting and far better level design. Doesn't the CD version just use an improved version of the Batman Returns driving section engine? Game looks far too frustrating for my tastes
I can't figure out what it is about your microphone in these newer videos. It sounds like you're talking into a analog radio mic from the fifties. I don't much care for it, sir. Great videos though, as per usual.
Thank you for the kind words, though don't worry about the mic. This last batch of videos were cannibalized from my old channel, My Life with SEGA. Back then I recorded my narration using a standard definition mic on my video camera. You can hear my mic switch midway through the Batman video. The switch happens during Batman Forever... The mic I've been using since I started MCTV is a 5.1 HD mic on my current video camera. The show's budget is rather light, so I have to make do with what I have.
I remember when Acclaim annouced the PlayStation only 3D Batman game, which was beyond the abilities of the Sega Saturn and expected something amazing, sadly that only applied to the Tim Follin music, game itself was awful. Saturn didn't miss anything with this one.
I think the arcade game on Saturn is bit of a sleeper hit as you gloss it over due to the bad rep of the Genesis version but then when you realise it's nothing even similar and play it, it's an enjoyable game albeit the difficulty. However I feel that is down to what I call 'The Neo Geo effect' it's an arcade game port and as we all know arcade cabs are designed to rinse our quarters. The Adventures of Batman & Robin games look great fun however to my knowledge they are like rocking horse shit in the PAL regions unless you have a money tree out back to pluck a few bucks from.
Fuck, man! You weren't kidding about the PAL release. Went to eBay and looked up the latest sale for a complete-in-box PAL release. $173, not counting $18.97 for shipping and handling?! WTF?! Why is it so fuckin' expensive? Were there not a shit-ton of copies produced?
Why not? Admittedly, I know December's gonna' slow me down. At least I *fear* it's gonna' slow me down. While I was taking stock of all the work I've done over the last seven years I saw a lot of my older episodes still held up, so I got to work on correcting 'em. Kinda' got on a roll and started uploading them as soon as I finished.
I'm inclined to disagree there. The fighting works well enough, but the precision and timing required in later levels - in conjunction with the lack of lives/continues - makes it far from 'easy'. For me at least. As "impossible" as folks make Batman & Robin out to be, I think *that* game's easier to play.
Batman forever is the best sega batman ur wilding..its the most difficult thats what makes it great..honestly since u say ur not into mortal kombat it makes sense because this game like mortal combat is made for players who dont like simple controls mortal kombat is amazing when u have the patience to learn complex button combos and what makes this game so ahead of its time os the fighting mode where u can go head to head and pic your opponent ..its almost like having injustice back in the 90s..its virtual the only game where u have a real arsenal of weapons and moves with a story mode plus a mortal kombat fightin game style mode...and currently injustice batman is made from mortal kombat gameplay..they doin it 30 years later
I'm sorry, but I have to disagree. Trying to combine the complex move-set of a tournament fighter with a platform/jumping game, some of which are timed and without the use of a dedicated 'jump' button, is absurd. This system had - at best - six buttons to work with, unlike today. Being ahead of its time only works when you have the tech and knowledge for it to work properly. Look at the 3DO. They had plans to take that system online and work as a movie player well before Dreamcast and PS2 ever saw the light of day. Taken at face value, that sounds amazing. The reality isn't so, considering we're talking about a system that was released in '94 where the internet was still somewhat wild, and it's only option for disc-based media capable of playing movies was Video CD. I think it was *too* far ahead for it to be viable, personally. I'll stick to Batman Forever on Saturn.
@@MasterCastTV maybe because i have it emulated on my psp and set to super nintendo button format...i would imagine it sucks on a sega controller like most intricate fighting games..honestly i think if u try it for snes its probably better
@@MasterCastTV but out of all the old batman games thats the only one i can think of with an actual move list..i wud imagine its better on sega saturn tho never tried it
I used the six-button controller here, which is actually an improvement over Super Nintendo for it doesn't relegate the grappling hook to a 'select' button. That's a greater hinderance than SEGA, where it's actually a proper 'action' button. The six-button trounces Super Nintendo in regards to fighting games, in my opinion, for the layout better mimics that of an arcade setup. Plus, the D-pad makes it that much easier to pull off combinations for you can truly *feel* down-right, up-right, down-left, up-left, etc. Play Super Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat II on Genesis with a six-button, be it from SEGA or ASCii, and Super Nintendo won't stand so tall. Regardless, they both suffer from the 'up'-is-jump issue, which isn't good for timed 'jumps' later. While some may be able to work past it, I don't think the game's enjoyable enough. Again, a move-list is fine - for fighting games. Platform/jumping games in two dimensional space made in the 90's? Not so much. Tell me, have you actually beaten Batman Forever properly? By "properly" I mean no 'save states'? Have you played the game on its own terms where your lives/continues are capped and beaten it? Now, don't get me wrong, I've played plenty of games I haven't beaten and love them regardless because I *know* I'm the problem. I have a tough time memorizing patterns, or I just get burned out, or whatever. Take The Adventures of Batman & Robin - that game's hard as fuck. However, I feel it's fair about it, for the most part. The controls work as they should, and they're not overtly complex for what the game is. I have yet to beat it. Still, that's on me.... With Batman Forever, you're expected to endure 80 stages - some of which feature timed jumps - with only a few lives/continues. That's a lot, and the controls aren't *that* precise. If emulation improves on that, great, but I don't deal with emulation for it's not an accurate representation of the game. I critique the real thing on real hardware, blemishes and all, because that's what my sort of player/collector does. If I based my reviews on emulation, using 'save states' or modified controllers/layouts, then my reviews would be all over the place.
@@MasterCastTV oh if its select for the hook then i must have it set up didferent on my psp and no way wud i have the oatience to beat any of those games now maybe when i was a kid..for genesis i remember having 3 batmans...the one with robin where u just throw objects and punch pretty much.. then that other one that u showed for genesis... but out the 3 batman forever always stood out to me cuz it had alot of moves... as for which system its better for i couldnt tell ive only played genesis version on psp emulation revently and havent played it on an actual sega in over 20 years.probably just personal prefrence when i was a child the 1st batman movie i saw was batman forever so im more familiar with the charachters and it just made it more of an experience for me

Great video. Agree on all games! Haven't played the adventures of Batman and Robin though.
Price is a big factor on the last part. Both the PAL Mega Drive and Mega cd releases are bloody expensive.
(looks it up)
I might be one of few that actually enjoy playing Batman Forever on Sega.
You must have the patience of a goddamn saint. For that, I commend you.
At the time I remember thinking forever was very cool looking with the digitized graphics and being a beat em up...
If they had simplified the controls and adjusted the health to match something like Streets of Rage, I think it could have been good.
I had batman returns for the master system and absolutely loved it, I would stay up so late playing it
I guess I'll have to give it a try soon. :)
Master-Cast TV brilliant!! It was so good for me at 10 years old I wonder how it would hold up now :/
Well I'm playing it today. Fairly certain I'll make it a video. Give me reason to play the T2 SMS games as well. You'll get a shout-out for sure.
Master-Cast TV I really don't know what to say but thank you so much! To be engaging with one of my favourite critics like this is overwhelming!!
The only Terminator game I played for the master system was RoboCop v Terminator, I remember being so hyped to play it
I think if snes had a cd virsion of it just like sega cd the adventures of batman and robin on snes woulda been combined with the cd virsion of the adventures of batman and robin vehicle missions to form 1 amazing batman game
Have you ever played Batman on the Gameboy? Batman has a GUN in that version and just kills everyone. Good music though
Hahaha! Yeah, at a friend's house way back when. I remember liking it. If they had based it on the original comic in which Batman held a gun all the time, and actually killed his enemies on occasion, it wouldn't seem so weird.
@@MasterCastTV WTF?
That goes against the entire Batman mythos
He was reluctant to kill the Xenos in the awful Batman Vs Aliens Graphic Novel
Is this...My Life With Sega?
Yep! Sorry. It was a busy year, and I was still reasonably happy with my reviews, so I re-edited them into one great big video and re-branded it with my new series: Master-Cast TV.
@@MasterCastTV Cool. This is Epic
I’m Bat-Man!
great video
Thank you! It was literally years in the making. The Batman video was first produced in 2012.
Master-Cast TV damn that was a while ago
I know right? The Batman Returns video was produced a year or two after, and Batman Forever was three years ago.
Batman Forever was the shit for Genesis.
Oh, it's shit alright. LOL! I'm curious, did you manage to beat it without cheating? I'm not trying to be snarky here; I'm genuinely curious.
Batman and robin for genesis is impossible I can barely get past first stage
I've gotten to the Madhatter's stage - without cheating - so I can't say it's impossible. It's hard-as-fuck, yes; just not impossible.
I had the first one on the game boy. shit that takes me back.
Wow so many ports of batman i realy do wish that sega would bring back streets of rage and 80 levels for batman forever good grief.
My God, I wish they had cut levels out of Batman Forever (Genesis). 80's too much for that piece of shit.
The Master System games are diferent too
I think the arcade game on Saturn is bit of a sleeper hit as you gloss it over due to the bad rep of the Genesis version but then when you realise it's nothing even similar and play it, it's an enjoyable game albeit the difficulty.
So many rewiews latetly!
Hahaha! You want me to slow down?
Master-Cast TV No,but kinda curious,why?
Batman Returns (Megadrive) was really easy to play this game I know the gameplay can give very hard
I'm inclined to disagree there. The fighting works well enough, but the precision and timing required in later levels - in conjunction with the lack of lives/continues - makes it far from 'easy'. For me at least. As "impossible" as folks make Batman & Robin out to be, I think *that* game's easier to play.
Batman and robin would have been the perfect Batman game if it wasn’t dumbed down to a contra type shooter.!! 🤦🏿♂️
They should Slow down this damn
@@MasterCastTV oh if its select for the hook then i must have it set up didferent on my psp and no way wud i have the oatience to beat any of those games now maybe when i was a kid..for genesis i remember having 3 batmans...the one with robin where u just throw objects and punch pretty much.. then that other one that u showed for genesis... but out the 3 batman forever always stood out to me cuz it had alot of moves... as for which system its better for i couldnt tell ive only played genesis version on psp emulation revently and havent played it on an actual sega in over 20 years.probably just personal prefrence when i was a child the 1st batman movie i saw was batman forever so im more familiar with the charachters and it just made it more of an experience for me
keep up the good work mate. you make me piss.
Hahaha! Well, I'm glad I didn't make you shit. I didn't have a GameBoy then, so I never got to play it. In fact, I didn't get a portable until the GameBoy Advance SP came out. Regret trading it. :(
You forgot "Batman: Joker's Revenge"?
Didn't forget. Simply didn't own it at the time. Played it back in the day, and I thought it was awful. Didn't bother to re-purchase. Playing Batman Forever on Genesis was hard enough to re-live.
BWAHAHAHAHAHA! Love the sarcasm. Great vid
OMG don't leave the discs out like that! LOL
You're the last guy to lecture me on CD care, Mr. Bending Shelf of Doom! LOL! Of course I don't leave the discs out like that. I'm not an Xbox fan. :P
Rosa, you are a madman. I enjoy your videos
I suppose I am to keep making these videos after so many years.
