    Super helpful and instructive video! Especially since I am in the middle of acquiring all the components to build my own Ritchey Ascent :) Like you I'm using a combination of new and old components. I used your video to identify the correct crankset that I'll need. Thanks for producing this excellent video! I really appreciate it :) Happy Riding Suzanne!

      @@bicyclepicnic Hi Francisco & Suzanne. There was one thing I was looking for in the video but didn't find and that's the bottom bracket. Would you happen to have the information on that? Manufacturer and part number? Please and thank you :)

      I think I found it on your spreadsheet... Shimano SM-BB80 Saint Hollowtech II Bottom Bracket. Is that the one?

    Error on your FD description that has some importance, and that adds some extra interest to your excellently well-made informative video.
    You have the wrong model listed in your spreadsheet.
    You actually have the Alivio FD-M3100-M which is 3x, not 2x. You can see the part number on the box and that model has the all-metal cage.
    This is important because the Alivio 2x FDs come in boost and non-boost options (FD-M3120-M-B and FD-M3120-M). The 3x only has the one chainline option, 50mm (for the middle ring) which is standard for older 3x rigs.
    So this is cool because we can see how a 3x FD gives a wide pull to cover boost on 2x. (Chainring gap is about 8-9mm, so the outer on the 3x is further out than a boost 2x outer ring.
    The issue with this for builders can also be excellently seen in this vid, and that's the longer 3x cage being set for 2 rings with a small granny. See the chainstay clearance? Looks like the cage almost touches.
    I have a 3x FD on my 22/36 rings, and I have it mounted for the granny chainline in the bottom of the cage. That means when in the outer, the cage is high above the ring with a large gap. Does that mean the chain sometimes falls off the outside of the ring? I dunno, because I have a lightweight bashguard on my old 3x crankset in place of the big ring.
    The Alivio 2x FDs are the only groupset that has different models for boost and non-boost. Presumably the other groups' FDs simply have wide enough pull to cover the extra 3mm.

    Wow very nice video, I love the attention to details in part choices and how you went over reasoning etc
    Also film and sound quality are excellent IMO 👍
    I really like what you did with the bike, although for myself I'd prefer it as a 1x drivetrain for less moving parts

      I never had any issues with front derailleurs over 27 years of cycling. I did find that (bottom swing) designs are far more reliable over the long run (far less play in the links develop) than top swing designs.

    Do you think the medium size would be ok for someone who is 172 cm?

  • @WanderABit
    @WanderABit 2 роки тому

    Forgot to ask :-) You mounted front derauiller -- in your opinion how much the cage of FD limits the tire width? Or in other words, how wide tire you can fit considering FD cage on smaller chainring? Thank you in advance for your help.

    • @bicyclepicnic
      @bicyclepicnic  2 роки тому +1

      That’s a good question, with the right front derailleur you shouldn’t have any limitations on tire clearance. This is using a boost crankset, you need a front derailleur that goes a bit farther out than a normal one. Normally you can buy a direct mount derailleur and a clamp with an offset. So as i was saying before, if the range of movement of the derailleur is good for the a boost double crank then it should not interfere with the tire.

    Hello, good video. How does the sizing compare to the bridge club?
    I'm 1m75 and don't want a to long stem. So a medium maybe to small. Gonna run flatbars.

    • @bicyclepicnic
      @bicyclepicnic  Рік тому +2

      Hi ! My girlfriend is 1.65m and fits well with a 70mm stem on the Ascent size M, based on that I would say the size M would be too small for a 1.75m person. Compared to the Bridge Club on same size the Ascent is always shorter reach and higher stack, you can compare easily using bikeinsights.com 😉

    Hi, what is length of your bike crank please (170, 175 or 175) ?

  • @WanderABit
    @WanderABit 2 роки тому

    Waiting for my Ascent and panicking a little whether I ordered the right size :-) Solid video, thank you! What crankset exactly did you use? I mean, chainrings and arm length?

    • @bicyclepicnic
      @bicyclepicnic  2 роки тому +1

      Hi ! we are using a Shimano Deore FC-M4100-B2 which comes with 26-36 chainrings and we chose 170mm arm length because it works well for a medium size, although, in my experience the crank arm length is not very important, I have some bikes with 170 and others with 175 and I don't even notice de difference. For the crankset, remember it has to be BOOST cause this frame's hub clearances are BOOST and so you need to keep the chainline, as explained in the video ;)
      Cheers !

    Hello, how tall are you? Your inseam? What size did you choose? Thank youuu!!

    • @bicyclepicnic
      @bicyclepicnic  2 роки тому +1

      Hi ! Suzanne is 1,65m and the fits her perfect on size Medium. He is currently running a flat bar but she could put a drop bar with a shorter stem. Dunno the inseam but considering the slope on the top tube it doesn’t matter much.

    There's no risk to use ANY crankset with 9s or any other 🙂
