I bought this for work. I paid $21 on Amazon. I like it because I can actually use it and not be too worried about damaging it. I was previously using a utility knife and I find the blades to be not nearly as strong or versatile. The handle material is very tough and the clip is excellent. Home Depot should sell this knife. Way better than Dewalt or Milwaukee for less money.
Thanks for another great review! Honesty, I like that Cold Steel advertises that their knives are tough. It seems like a lot of guys expect to walk around with a $300-400 (or more) envelope opener. There should be something rugged about a pocket knife; you whip it out to get the job done in a pinch, not tippy toe around its limits and delicate tip, and then, when it won’t perform, the company doesn’t honor the warranty because you looked at it funny and hurt its feelings. Seems even more silly than stabbing a pig carcass! Hope my thoughts are something to consider!
I hate nick Shabazz dude talks like he doesn't do any real work with his knives also expects every knife should be $500-$1000 showpiece that ur afraid to use lol
I used one of these to cut vinyl tile made clean easy controled cuts when i was done it sharpened right backup and ready for the next job . It is a excellent box cutter/ utility knife
Yeah Nick ---the stiff tension on the the Triad lock is intentional by Cold Steel...makes for a very secure lockup. The Tufflite seems like a good box cutter utility knife...
I wish Cold Steel would make a version of this with XHP, aluminium handles (in a few color options) and a tip up clip... Call it the 'Real Tuff' or something and give it a 100$ MSRP...
Speaking only for myself.....I'm not sure I would pay $70-$100 for a blade with very limited uses. I think it's fine now for what it is, at the price that it's at.
I have one of these guys and I love it, but due to "hedonic adaptation" (loved that video), I upgraded to a CRKT Pilar 1 (the BladeHQ with D2) and it's perfection....but now I'm looking at the Spyderco Native. I like finger choils, obvously. Thanks for your videos!
I remember when of those steel nuts testing a bunch of knives and he had a cold steel aus8 blade out cut a vg10 Spyderco. Aus8 is basically Japan’s competition to 440c. If it’s heat treated well it’s decent....especially for $30.
Alright...I have owned benchmade, SOG, buck, Kershaw, puma, case, and more. My Cold Steel knives are by far my best all round cutters. I own 4 of the old style Cold Steel voyagers in AUS8, with 4 & 5 inch blades. They are over 20 years old and have endured heavy use. They sharpen up fast and slice meat very efficiently.
I know this comment is 2 years old but I thought I would show how times have changed in the knife market. At the time you did this video knife collectors could not expect much for $30-40 price range. Fast forward to Aug. 2018 the selection is mind boggling. Tangram, Civivi. OKC Rat, SRM etc. The quality of the Chinese offerings is just amazing. We now get $100 knife quality for $50 or less. At the moment it is a great time for knife collectors of all price ranges. It is much easier to get a high quality knife in almost any price range.
@@theoriginal.Bobbyd Because you are ripping off a company that spent the cash to design a product just to have the design stolen and produced by a nation with one of the worst track records when it comes to worker safety, pay and rights not to mention pollution. China is doing a great job at manufacturing fentanyl over here if you love having a giant junkie crisis. So yep, I can think of a few reasons why I don't buy Chinese and knock off clone knives.
@@russellcharles7839 I have no problems buying from AliExpress. Why spend a (110) dollars for a Dragonfly when I can get an exact replica shipped to me for (15) dollars.
I noticed you put the pocket clip on the left-hand side even though you are right handed. I'm going to try that because it will work better in the right front pocket.
As someone who went to school for graphic design with an emphasis in printing and an expert silkscreen printer in the aerospace industry.... I'm soooooo glad and impressed that you noticed all the stupid fonts on the knife.
+Maxwell Super (Atomedge Sharpening) Hah, thank you for justifying my critique. Is it just me, or is the kerning in the knife world just disastrous? Why can't knifemakers hire graphic designers?!
Before they sold out to GSM Outdoors and moved to Texas, they used to be based in my town in California. Once a year they would have a big parking lot sale at their HQ. That was fun - they would do cutting demonstrations, give out free hot dogs & have raffle giveaways. Back then, I was never impressed with their knives - most of them were big ugly things with rough plastic handles. At the sale, the local mall ninjas would buy tons of their tanto blades & samurai swords.
I have this knife and it fits my hand perfectly. i keep it in a bag i carry from time to time and it comes in handy. i edc the spyderco chapparal and also have the civivi odium. They are all similar size and feel in hand but sometimes the wharncliff blade on the tuff lite comes in handy and it does seem to take to rougher tasks really well.
This one comes down to being a man or not being a man. True men love this knife. Limp wristeds aren’t tuff enough to use it. Seriously damn good work knife
I’m definitely more of a collector than a user, but I do carry a knife everyday. I work outside on the west coast and most of the knives I collect happen to be D2… so I had to buy something cheap and corrosion resistant so that I can actually carry and use it without fear of damaging part of my collection,
Spyderco yojimbo 2 more like $160 (on sale), 3 inch cutting edge, amazing ergonomics, lock of comparable strength. Designed as a self defense tool, but an even better razorblade on crack(utility use) than tuff lite, with CPM s30v steel.
You say you will refrain from stabbing pigs Nick, but you cannot fool my detective level attention to detail, because between the frames of the video at 2:05 - 2:08 the knife clearly moved 1.9mm, because you took the knife, walked over to your fridge, removed a pack of pork chops, and then stabbed them 39 times before wiping the blade clean, possibly with your tongue, then placing it back down on the table.
If you take the clip off, then it slips in and out of the 5th pocket okay, but not as well as a Spyderco Lil Native, let alone a Dragonfly or a Baby Banter. I, too, hate releasing the lock. It’s almost painful. OTH, I’m keeping it. The lock won’t fail, it has washers not bearings, and I can sharpen it on the bottom of a coffee mug.
lol just did a video of the tuff lite. it is a great little blade for secondary carry and yes they video are insane but they know their steel ;) Just can not stand the pocket clip so I take it off and use a lanyard for better grip at the pinky finger. cool video mate
When I think Mall Ninja I don't think, "A knife I could use to chop a cow in half" I think one of those wall hanger daggers with a handle that looks like a dragon and made from a chinese mystery steel.
I really enjoy your reviews. You helped me to get how "table top reviews" can be fun and interesting, while I used to hate them... guess I lacked a little stretch of imagination! ;)
In my opinion the price far outweighs all of your criticisms. None of which bother me at all, i.e. this sounds like a much more than “adequate” knife for my personal expectations for any knife in the $30 price range. Which happens to be MY preferred price range. The most I would ever consider paying for any knife would probably be $60. I would, and fully intend, to buy one.
One thing, the lock travel has a lot to do with the lock strength. Spyderco Lock-Backs are weak because their locks aren't deep enough. With a good Lock-Back, you want the Lock-Bar to seat deep into the blade tang; that's where a lot of the lock strength is in Lock-Back type folders. Especially, one's like the Spyderco's shallow Lock-Back. Personally, I love the ergonomics of the Tuff-Lite. But, I would like to see the blade steel be the New CTS-BD1. But, it's still the best Mini for the price. And, it's one of the easiest knives to re-sharpen and use. For the price range, it's the best Mini out there, in my opinion; it's meant to be a work horse. And, it is. Peace, Stiletto :)
Nick, please don’t think I’m trolling or being an a$$hole, but what is a typical knife usage day for you? I am a regular viewer but the one thing I question is why do you give such importance to whether a knife has super steel or just “average” steel when talking about edc? Is your daily knife usage so extreme that you can’t stop and sharpen your knife? Does the edge have to last a month to be a good knife? I may be wrong, but I would venture to guess that daily usage for at least 90% of your viewers consists of 1) opening a delivery box from something they ordered online, 2) cleaning there fingernails, 3) opening letters, 4) maybe stripping a wire or two while tinkering in their garage, 5) or most likely just whipping it out of their pockets to show off to their friends or coworkers. I understand you are doing reviews, but keep it real. Most viewers never use their knives for anything other than cutting paper or cardboard. Again, my apologies if my comment came off as a$$hole. I’m just old school and view knives as tools and not collectors items. If it cuts, does a good job, and is easy to resharpen, then it’s a winner in my book. Keep up the good work. ,
