Hello #travelers! My name is #Anastasios #Grecos and you are watching #Tourismos Travel Guru channel.
One of the less #touristic places in Greece lies in the southwestern part of its #Mainland. Missolonghi is the #capital of the #Aetolia #Acarnania region, famous for its diverse landscape: #wetlands and blue #lagoons, a rich fertile #valley, lakes and a cyan #river which used to be worshiped as a God. Its name derives from the #Venetian words MESSO and LAGHI which means "a place surrounded by lakes.
Missolonghi lies 240 km west of #Athens and 48 km northwest of #Patras, the main #port of the #Peloponnese. It has almost 19000 permanent residents and its official name is the Sacred town of #Messolonghi, as here was the site of a dramatic #siege during the #Greek War of Independence, and of the death of #poet Lord #Byron.
The Garden of #Heroes in the city center is a #Memorial that will take you back to those years of struggle and worths your attention. The Municipal #Gallery, which is housed in the Town Hall, hosts a collection of paintings inspired by the Greek revolution and Missolonghi #Exodus.
Explore the neoclassical #Mansions, the wide streets and the main square with its narrow alleys full of life, #shops and tavernas.
Missolonghi is also known for its fishing products, especially #bottarga ( #avgotaracho in Greek, which is an amazing #delicacy ), since the regional lagoons are ideal for fish #farming.
The area is famous for its rich bird and fish life. Its shallow waters help to grow a rich flora which is food for tens of thousands of ducks, #cormorants, #seagulls and more. The picturesque "pelades" - are the small wooden houses on stilts, in the water - found all over the lagoon, this #Ramsar protected #environmental #park and #ecosystem.
South of Missolonghi lies #Tourlida. An authentic fisherman’s shelter. The beach is offering refreshing moments, while the nearby Salt museum is a unique surprise! The area is famous for the high quality and superior taste of locally produced sea #salt!
Next stop #Aetoliko. An impressive island in the middle of blue lagoons.
Follow the road towards #Neochori and #Katochi two lovely farming villages and then to #Louros beach, near the Achelous river delta. You won’t believe in your eyes that such places exist in Greece. Rare images reminding of #African #basins and Asian steppes are creating a magical safari experience. Enjoy this breathtaking adventure, creating everlasting memories!
#Astakos lies 49 km northwest of Missolonghi. It is a small port of the #Ionian sea that connects Aetolia with #Kefalonia and #Ithaca islands. Do not miss the nearby secret exotic #beaches and coves!
East of Missolonghi the glorious past meets a miracle of modern #Mechanics. The medieval #castle of Antirrion lies next to the Rio - #Antirrio #bridge connecting the Peloponnese with the western mainland, built in a special and advanced way in one of the most seismic active areas in Europe.
And finally #Nafpaktos, or Lepanto as it used to be known during the middle ages. A stunning place where Miguel de #Cervantes the famous #Spanish writer fought against the Ottomans 5 centuries ago. The picturesque harbour, the #mediterranean sea breeze, the romantic sidewalks and the castle overlooking the bay complete this dreamy picture!
#Paradise on earth has a name and it is located in Greece.
