Thank you Matthew. When your starting a new garden “ gardens “ from scratch no one can expect you to have all of your garden beds looking exactly how you want them to end up looking. In future years you may want to have a beautiful vegetable garden, it’s just not the right time for you to get it completed right now. So no worries, it’s just fun to see what you have accomplished and it’s been a lot so far. 💐💚🙃

It’s going to be beautiful!! You choose some gorgeous dahlia varieties. Just so you know, if the sprout breaks off it will absolutely grow another sprout. That’s how cuttings are taken. Those little potatoes have some amazing survival skills 😂

Oh goodness! I’m right there with you! My plans and ideas for my garden far exceed what my time is actually allowing this spring. 😅 I made a list the other day of all that I’ve gotten done rather than a to do list-And wow, did that help shift my mindset. What you have accomplished is incredible!

I had a long, busy, dirty, exhausting day outside too. Weather was perfect, but had too many plants to get into the ground and not enough strength/stamina to get it done. Loving my progress, but 12 more shrubs/perennials to go. I think I'll be dashing out during the breaks in rain, since forecast says wet for the next 10 days. Your garden is coming along so beautifully! Thanks for allowing us to hitch a ride on your journey!

I planted my Dahlia where my pool used to be. Very sandy , and I have clay soil too. It has worked great.

Peppers and tomatoes are my main concern also! It looks like the peas I mistakenly planted in my tomato area are doing fabulous but I now have issues with where I will plant my green beans! I just planted a few rooted Brugmansia around my yard and a peony or 3! I would LOVE a cut flower garden, maybe next year....since I now have an 8X12 greenhouse to grow seedlings in as a 69th birthday present from my husband and have the summer to get the heat wired in so I can keep the temps at above 45* threw the winter. I do love dahlias and plan to plant a few this year too! LOVING how your garden is coming along!.

I grow Dahlias here in Georgia and fortunately they overwinter well. They are my new favorite flower to grow! My Iris were not happy to hear this😄

Hi Matthew, looking forward to seeing these. The one time I dug up my tubers I kept them in the garage. They all went rotten 😢

    Beautiful dahlia choices!
Your work ethic is inspiring. Keep chasing your dream garden. It's a lifelong process for those of us who are lucky enough to remain healthy.
Question about breaking off dahlia shoots - isn't that essentially what people do who take cuttings? And wouldn't it then regrow?

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  4 місяці тому

Apparently the sprouts do regrow - even if they’re broke all of the way off. I didn’t realize that. Cuttings are often taken from plants that have at least green growth that’s a little bigger though.

Hi Matthew, it all looks great! I hope I can be as productive as you in my garden. Love the hat your wearing, can you tell us where you bought it? Thanks.

I don’t remember where the hat is from, but I think I picked it up from Sam’s club. It provides really good sun protection on the neck area. :)

Please be kind to yourself cuz you've done an amazing job with your property. Last year was my first year growing dahlias and I fell in love However I swore I wasnt gonna dig them up and store as I dont have a temp controlled place where they can go. So I'm waiting to see if last years come back (zone 9b) and hoping so but with all the rain, I'm worried they rotted. Went crazy this year and ordered too many. Many in the color way of your Natalie dahlias. Oh so hoping they'll keep coming back. My greenhouse project has been a fiasco, thus nothing by seed either. Im hoping to direct sow some things like cosmos and zinnias which I understand are super easy. That might be an idea for you once it's warm enuf!!! How is your James Galway rose wall coming? :)

Things are coming along at a nice gentle pace.
    No pressure or expectations.
I hope you are enjoying the process as you go.
Lovely dahlia choices that will work with your roses, yarrow and phlox.
I was wondering where your flower name tags were, but I expect you have everything planned on paper.
Gardening is truly creating works of art, Jo😊

Just sow your zinnias directly in the ground! It’s been so warm they’ll be up in no time.

Hi Matthew! Your cut flower garden is going to be beautiful! The dahlias and perennials you planted are going to go so well together, and with your roses. I'm looking forward to seeing what you planted in the front, and other projects you'll be working on. You've gotten so much done already. You deserve a big pat on the back. Thank you so much for sharing!

New to dahlias here, it was my impression that if you broke off a stem from an eye that it will still grow back a new stem on the original eye? Or are you saying, if the whole eye gets broken off then it won't grow back? Thank you for the information! 😊d

So cool to see you filling up your cut flower garden! I started all my new dahlia tubers in pots yesterday; I have the best luck doing it that way and planting them out once they are a foot or so high. Central Ohio, fairly heavy clay soil, but my dahlias do tend to come back- yay! I dig the soil pretty deeply and amend it, so the drainage is pretty good, which helps avoid rot. I have a bunch of Floret’s zinnias I started from seed in my Aerogarden all hardened off and ready to plant. Can’t believe I’m considering doing that now, have never had temperatures consistently warm so early here 😮
