Firebreaks

Firebreaks serve several purposes, but the most important is to contain a prescribed fire within the boundaries of the burn unit. For this reason, they often also define the perimeter of a prescribed fire. Firebreaks can be created using hand tools, dozers, or other equipment, or they can be existing features such as roads. The type of firebreak appropriate for a prescribed fire depends on factors such as available fuels, equipment, and topography.
