    After living in Korea for almost 5 years and then moving back to Canada for over 4 years now, this video strikes a cord. Although I have more vacation time here and more independence in terms of language, I miss being financially stable in Korea. Here, I’m always pinching pennies despite having a full-time management position. And don’t even get me started on the Healthcare differences… I feel that Korea has made fun accessible. I had a much better work/fun life balance there and things were so much more affordable. I needed to go back to Canada for personal reasons, but if you’re genuinely happy, stay wherever makes you thrive. ✨

    Koreans dont do small talk… except Ahjummas and grannies and grandpas. Old people are a lot more sociable withforeigners. They may be nosy, and sometimes look rude (they Dont have filters 😂), but a lof of old people like chatting with strangers, and once you talk to them they are very warm and friendly. If you are a people- person, talk to old people. Some are very sweet.
    Young people are shy and reserved, and they think talking to strangers may be rude. But if you ask for help they will try hard.

    This is the video I needed!! I got into k-dramas and K-pop almost 3 years ago and got really into the language and culture and I visited for the first time in April 2024 for 2 weeks and I’m going back in January and staying for 2 months. It is so unsafe where I live. When I went to Korea in April, there was a break-in, a double murder, and a stabbing just in my little city in Mississippi. All that was just in the first week I was gone. I am currently getting my bachelors and hopefully graduating December 2025. After that I want to become an English teacher in Korea. I have anxiety and depression and Korea was honestly the happiest I’ve been in a long time. I just quit my job because of the stress and instead of finding a new job right away, I’m wanting to take 1 more vacation to Korea for 2 months this time. I don’t know if it was more of a culture shock or my anxiety when I experience something new or getting out of my comfort zone that made me a little nervous while I was there. But compared to where I live, I can actually walk around at night in Korea and not feel scared like I do when I just take the trash can down to the end of the driveway at my house. When I was in Korea, I went to Daegu for the day to visit friends who live there and when I got back, it was dark and after 11pm by the time I got back to my hotel from the train station. Just walked to the bus stop, got on the bus, and went back to my hotel. Didn’t feel scared.

      @@CariW90the commenter was just warning you because, unfortunately, it’s true. You must be careful, everywhere in the world, of course, but there are certain things you must be aware of. Never take a drink from someone at a club, or leave it unattended. This is the way many of the SA’s occur.
      Also, if you have anxiety and depression, you must take into account that Koreans may be polite, but don’t easily make friends with foreigners. They’re not very much in touch with their feelings or emotions, in many cases, which is why they have an unusual drinking culture; it appears this is their only way to open up, which is unfortunate.
      However, there are more and more foreigners from all over arriving, and Koreans who have lived abroad, are different, of course. You can probably make a nice community with all those folks, and, of course, there are always exceptions amongst the locals.
      I was raised and lived all over the world, so…I do recommend it! It’s a gift to one’s mind and soul to go live in entirely different cultures; it stretches the brain, like nothing else can. Going first for two months is a great idea! You can get a good feel in that amount of time. It’s good to not romanticize anyplace, but, who knows? You might fit right in. And, feeling safe is a very big deal; I could not agree more!
      Good luck!😊🫶🏻

      @@ot7stan207 That's a hallmark of socially liberal policies focused on rehabilitation. As compared to the US, SK has a recidivism rate of ~5% for SA related crimes, the US on the other hand is ~30%. The US is also literally dead last when it comes to criminal rehabilitation/recidivism on top of having nearly double the crime rate of SK (49.2 crime index vs 25.3 crime index). The US is one of the worst "1st world" crime countries actually, and that's despite sucking up all the resources from other countries/ruining them.

    I love this channel! I was introduced to Korean culture via friends and K-pop. Right away I wanted to start learning the language, so I could better understand and follow along. I've got a long way to go, but I'm excited about having a long-term learning project.
    What's irritating is when my friends readily "remind" me, it's not a K-drama, I won't fit in, it's a patriarchal structure, Korean men aren't all soft and romantic, etc... I BLEEPING KNOW! But there wasn't so much discouragement when I traveled to and entertained fantasies about living in European countries.
    There's good and bad people everywhere, and just because I admire a country and culture for something doesn't mean I agree with every single thing. I always try to be on my best unofficial ambassador when I travel, because I am a guest in that country.
    I love that this content shows the whole picture and isn't afraid to ask some of the uncomfortable questions. Very inspiring! Keep up the good work 🙂

    As a Korean-American and agnostic of the fact that not all Korean-Americans are a monolith (some Korean-Americans are resolutely "American" in the sense that the U.S. is the only country they've ever known and others may be more in touch with their Korean history, language, and culture, etc.), I've had the privilege of being born and raised in America but still visiting/living in Korea often enough to see how its society has grown and evolved. This might be triggering for some folks, especially Americans as foreigners in Korea, but I feel that many Americans prefer Korea because of the degree of exceptionalism they feel in Korea that they don't necessarily feel in America, and that's partially because they are outsiders and somewhat excluded from Korean social norms and expectations. I think this is the X factor that not many people speak of because it's too honest but I'm noticing more and more that Americans preferring to live or be in Korea is not so much an issue of country as it is of identity.

Native English speakers are valuable in Korea whether due to their connection to America or just because they can teach English with very few qualifications which implies that many Koreans are looking to leave and go to America. My friend... you should ask these younger Americans what socio-economic, cultural background their from. Americans have a tendency to induce or impel their culture onto other nations, but simultaneously insult their homeland. The blonde girl from NC talking about how American Military people are disrespectful, is an example. American soldiers made great sacrifices during the Korean War ( 1950 - 1953 ), which ultimately prevented North Korea from winning and taking control of South Korea. Our military presence there, is to help keep South Korea safe and free. They ( US Military), are not there as tourists.

That's definitely why the American women feel safer. BuT the woman from the Chicago area, stating "I'm definitely not going back until the next election" sounds a bit sanctimonious. She chooses to ignore that the US presence in Korea helps keep it a free democracy. You may want to keep any political rhetoric out. Best to ask why they are there and how they managed their opportunity to get there; what they do to afford to stay there... aside from modeling. 😆

    Interesting perspectives. However, many of the individuals featured seem to be young and haven’t been in the country long enough to move beyond the 'honeymoon phase,' so to speak. Korea is undeniably a great country with much to offer... But for many foreigners, the initial magic tends to fade after a year or two as practical challenges arise. Issues like finances, visas, job opportunities, and real estate can become significant hurdles. That said, everyone's experience is different, and I wish nothing but the best for them.

Many foreign men say that after coming to Korea, they started taking care of their skin and paying attention to their appearance for the first time. Hi K Explorer
    I’d like to suggest a topic for your platform regarding the use of funeral wreaths as protest symbols in South Korea, particularly in the case of Seunghan from RIIZE.
    Seunghan was the target of a disturbing incident where nearly 1000 funeral wreaths were sent to him. While we know funeral wreaths are sometimes used for protests in South Korea, in this case, the wreaths were directed at an individual with harmful intentions, crossing into psychological harassment.
    Given your focus on cultural and societal issues, could you help us by conducting a street interview asking the public whether they believe sending funeral wreaths to a specific individual can ever be justified as protest, or if it crosses the line into harassment? We think a conversation around this would be valuable for your audience.
    Your platform has the ability to shed light on this important issue, and we’d greatly appreciate your help in raising awareness by gathering public opinion.

    To the point of the man wanting to have kids and not put them through school in Korea, I sure hope he doesn't want them schooled in America either because the schools are NOT safe and I would never want to have a child in American school because of all the shootings.

    • @nathanielmills4678
      @nathanielmills4678 Місяць тому +2

      Either that or have the child feel insecure about looking a little different. Plus the extra schools in Korea are a bit much. The whole system is geared towards passing exams and less creativity. I guess it depends on his priorities.

    • @peachentine
      @peachentine Місяць тому +1

      @nathanielmills4678 bullying exists in American schools just as much as it does in Korean ones, at least I would know the odds of my child being murdered by a classmate would be much lower.
      Admittedly I do have a strong opinion, a woman just ran for Congress in my mom's district who lost a child to a school shooting and we lost several cousins to a non-school mass shooting; I would take a country with no guns any day.

    • @nathanielmills4678
      @nathanielmills4678 Місяць тому

      Yes I agree with you there. In the UK I don't have to worry about if my child will come home after school. We had a mass shooting (Dunblane massacre) so gun controlled was tightened up.
      Schools in the UK and US however have a problem with child behaviour and respect which is why my daughter is going to a selective (grammar) school where a test must be passed to attend. On the whole they worlds apart from non selective and children are very well behaved and respectful. I don't know enough about that aspect of Korean schools.

    • @squiggs1002
      @squiggs1002 Місяць тому +2

      Depends where you go to school. There are many schools that are very safe. It all depends on the neighborhood and what kind of kids are attending. Threat of school shootings is grossly overblown. When they happen they get a lot of attention nationwide. But a study was done that showed the chances of a child dying from a school shooting in the US is 1 in 10 million. Just for reference the chance of getting hit by lightning in your lifetime is 1 in 15,000.

Maybe women interviewees seem to be foreigner models and I am just wondering whether they can say yes easily about living in Korea next year.
    On the other contrary, what if asian guy as korean want to try to live in US for job seeking? Is it possible to get an attention easily as Korean Privilege in western society without Kpop Kdrama background

    • @unknown5624
      @unknown5624 Місяць тому +8

      As a Korean, I wish people would stop talking about white privilege. It is disrespectful to them. Life as a foreigner in Korea is not easy for them either. They need to be sponsored to work and unless they are an English teacher or a model, they usually need to know Korean to get other job opportunities. On the other hand, foreigners who work in physical labor fields, which make up the majority of foreign labor in Korea, can get jobs even if they don't know Korean. Westerners from the first world don't work in such physical labor fields in Korea. Outside of physical labor fields, it is not easy for foreigners to get job opportunities in Korea. And they didn't say life in Korea is easy at all. English teacher jobs in Korea pay less than foreigners working in physical labor fields and the modeling field is saturated, so there is not much money to be made.
