On the way they talk about stuff and are very relaxed, except for one time when a shell or bomb lands near them. They are well away from the blast radius and Paul is not hurt at all. So he keeps walking and talking to Kat. Few hours later when they finally get back and he puts down Kat, Paul finds out that Kat is dead. A tiny piece of shrapnel from the exploding shell had hit Kat in the back of his head, killing him instantly. Paul unknowingly had carried his dead friend on his back all along.

The book and movie are masterpieces. No glory, no victory, just a fictional but true story of a man who slowly loses his friends and sanity, just to show that he is one among millions of soldiers experiencing the exact same thing.
For anyone wanting to watch the movie it’s called all quite on the western front it’s really good and it takes place on the German side of the First World War also should be noted there are two versions of the movie I don’t remember which one this is

Kat really was the last thing that kept paul going
Its horrifying how the medic has seen so much death that he doesn't have any hold back on saying hes dead.
Kat is basically the 2nd company's father. He took good care of them.
Kat didn't deserve to die. He was the best character. Always looking out for his comrades
He was one of my favorites in that movie
As a German, hearing the actual words made it more emotional because I could understand what they were saying.

movies like this need to be made. we need constant reminders that war is a terrible option.
The book is even more intense and it shows how the German soldiers were just as human as the allies were.
