PS5 4K Blu-ray Player Noise Reduction is Secretly Enabled by Default - Here's How to Turn It Off

  • We explain how to turn off noise reduction on the Sony PS5 4K Blu-ray player app, which is enabled by default, as well as changing a couple of other settings to obtain better sound quality (including Dolby Atmos or DTS:X) from 4K Blu-ray movies.
You'll need to press the [Options] button on your PS5 controller while the 4K Blu-ray player app is running.
The Sony PS5 4K Blu-ray player does not support 3D Blu-rays or Dolby Vision (which will be played back as HDR10 base layer).

These settings are probably chosen to reduce complaints or customer support questions. Lineair PCM is compatible with any device, but bitstream requires the receiving component to have the correct decoding capability. With the default set to bitstream, a percentage of customers might be wondering why they can't hear any sound. People are also more likely to complain about noise in an image than about a smoothed image with less detail. The assumption is possibly also that people who can't figure out that they need to change the settings or how to change them are probably also not too critical about sound or image quality to start with while the people who notice that the sound is plain stereo while it should be Dolby Atmos are also knowledgeable enough to figure out how to correct it.
In short, making a highly specialized tool for professional users is easy, making a mass-consumer product for a wide variety of customers is much harder.

Thank you for the deep dives into the PS5 playback and settings. Can you look into the 4K Blu-ray player and if it is true 24hz? The PS5 is my first 4K Blu-ray player but the frame rate stands out to me as a 60hz signal outputting a 24hz file. To my eye it has that soap opera effect that I can’t unsee. Would love your technical eye on this if possible. Thank you again!

Took me forever to figure this out and then I found this video. Wish I found it sooner but hope it at least helps others. It’s bizarre to me how Sony buried these settings AND set the defaults wrong. Took way too long to get my DTS:X working on my receiver using my PS5.

  • @SirAndras
    @SirAndras 3 роки тому +1

Regarding the settings set in on the PS5, I think it's cause LPCM is the default for MOST things and has been around the longest. I actually had an audio issue that I fixed just yday because of this. My PS5 was outputting LPCM but my TV (LG E9) was set to receive Bitstream. This resulted in some games audio dialogues (which are usually output through the middle speaker in a 5.1 set up) to simply not play, so all sound worked, except some dialogue. It doesn't really matter which you choose if you don't have a receiver (and even then it only matters for games actually supporting Dolby). Just make sure the receiving end (in my case TV) has the same setting as the PS5, whichever you choose it to be.

I notice devices always default to PCM, even if they support bitstream. So I look for this when I'm first setting things up.
I always assume its because the engineers have to consider the lowest common denominator in their customers; if they set to bitstream and the customer isn't connecting to a device that supports that, then they will have more calls to customer support with "why no audio!?!?!"

Don't know if it's gonna stay but I'm playing games and movies in port 2 and gaming at 120Hz now. The PS5 is now saying it's playing at 120Hz. I hope you can figure this all the way out. Thank you.

Bitstream if your sound bar can decode DTS HDMA. If it can’t then PCM. For Blu-rays with Dolby you should set it to bitstream.

Is there a way to change subtitles because when I change it it doesn't work like I enable closed captions and customise subtitles then when I enable it and enable on the menu

Is the PS5 4K UHD player better than my Sony ubp-x800m2 for playing 4K uhd disks? I haven’t tried it yet because I have both connected to my Samsung Q90T.

When I finally get a PS5, this will be very useful. We'll see how my chances fare this new year.

I have the Sony UBP-X700, and the total bits coming from it on 4K Blu-ray playback is 12, while the PS5 maxes out at 10. I have yet to see Dolby Vision on any of the 4K discs I own.

I watched the 4K blu ray of Home Alone yesterday on my ps5, through a lgcx 55inch oled. It looked really fantastic. I was very impressed. Some 4K blu rays are awful.

      Hi
I also play 4k discs on my ps5 whith my oled but it looks super grainy. I love grain but there is more than its supposed to be.
Also my 1080p blu rays are way too dark.
      Do you have these problems?

Bitstream is the better option unless you have a TV which doesn’t support DTS over eARC.

I am experiencing a weird issue with both my PS5 and Xbox Series X blu-ray drives.
Neither would play the Legend of the Holy Drinker (Arrow Academy) blu-ray. They both can read and identify the disc and the PS5 even shows its title with a screenshot from a movie. When I try launching it though, the blu-ray player app starts normally but then after a few seconds of "please wait" on a black screen it quits back to the PS5 UI. Same thing with the Series X, which lingers for a while and quits to the UI.
The blu-ray is listed as a Region B disc, while my next-gen consoles are Region C.
HOWEVER, this particular disc has been tested as lacking any regional protection and it still plays perfectly fine on my Region A PS4 and my Region C PS4 Pro.
Anyone experiencing something similar? What could be the issue? Is there a chance Sony fixes this with some sort of a firmware update?
