  • “Invitation" is an iconic jazz standard with a range of interpretations. Written by Bronislaw Kaper, the tune is an incredibly dynamic and emotionally evocative piece. With its memorable and playful melody, it’s no wonder why this has been a mainstay of jazz quartets, big bands, and vocal ensembles.
The chord progression of "Invitation" is both ambitious and inventive. There are several changes between major and minor keys that create a challenging yet uplifting atmosphere. A powerful give-and-take between the rhythm section and horns is essential for this piece to reach its fullest potential: the driving beats and playful solos spark off of each other. Indeed the whole ensemble comes together to produce a vibrant and exciting texture.
The heart of the piece is perhaps its modulating bridge. The bridge shifts between major and minor modes and features a momentary cadenza with a call-and-response solo. This creates an intense buildup that leads to an energetic climax.
Whether by an acoustic quartet or a contemporary big band, "Invitation" will always remain a fundamental jazz standard, embracing the elements that make jazz so alluring and beloved.
