In Finland when we're ice fishing for perch, we usually drop the lure just under the ice cap and go slowly toward the bottom, trying to fish every spot between the top and bottom. Many times those big perch are hunting just under the ice cap and in middle water. Sometimes when you drop the lure straight into the bottom the fish gets spooked and swim away. Of course this always depends on what lures are you using, what kind of lake you are fishing and every other magical ice fishing elements to take consider. I bet the lake bottom works just fine with insect-like lures, when minnow-like lures works best going from top to bottom. Also you have a cool channel, and HUGE perch in there! Keep up the great work! Thumbs up!
Our Perch here in Canada are almost always right on the bottom in the winter. Tapping a very small tungsten jig with a short bit of gulp earthworm about 3 inches off the bottom works amazing!
I am fortunate enough to have a lake 2 miles from work be full of jumbo perch! All I used is a swedish pimple maybe sometimes tipped with wax worms or a minnow head, but a lot of times a pink tube with no bait does the trick. Nice video Clayton!
Oh man, perch is an addiction to some of us on ice. I love the finesse involved. Beautiful fish and taste awesome. So much fun! Great video and man you're right meal worms are the hot ticket.
You are a beast dude! You're like the ice fishing version of the most interesting man in the world. Clayton Schick, I don't fish for perch often, but when I do I catch multiple jumbos at a time. (Unfortunately now days where I live 11"+ perch are jumbo)
I love the walleye videos but your perch videos are the best because of the quality of the perch you catch! Plus these were the first fish my grandpa took me ice fishing for the first time ever going ice fishing! Underrated eating fish....everybody is always like walleye walleye walleye....winter perch imo is the best tasting fresh water fish!
Thanks for the great video. Clayton do another catch and cook video. Last years "Catch and Cook Walleye!! " was the best, makes me want to do this myself. Thanks again Clayton
I'm watching your video while standing on the ice waiting for fish to bite, as a fishing content creator that's the ultimate goal👌 tight lines Clayton looking forward to the rest of the video!
So many guys on youtube fish for crappie/gills but don't ever fish for perch. They are a lot of fun and when you get on a school you can catch tons of them. And they make for a great fish fry!
Looking forward to seeing you land Lakers this year. I geared up after seeing your show last year. Unfortunately in Southern Ontario we have to wait for thick ice. Happy fishing bud 🎣
I just got that color tantrum today at the ice show. Glad to see that it works. Think I might have to purchase a frostbite rod after playing with them today.
I went and smashed big Splake in northern sask yesterday. Sight fished them. Ice so clear can see fish swimming under the 13 inches of hard water. Amazing day
the main cadence difference I have found with perch vs walleye is instead of keeping it moving and jiggling it on the spot when they close the distance to the jig hold it still and watch for the tick. "Are you happy with your purchase."=(perches)
We get them giants here in Wisconsin on the Mississippi River. I love catching em and it's one of my favorite fish to eat. I'm a panfisher. I need to learn more about walleyes. I do know one thing about em. They sure are delicious.
Heading to the Mississippi for my first time on Thursday. Hope to catch a couple but it is mainly for the adventure. If we have safe ice. Haven't been out yet and making a five hour drive just to get on ice. Hoping a couple days of cold gets us some safe ice. Right now not so much.
@@ICEMAV114 I have no idea. Im tagging along with a bunch of retired guys that fish the area. All they told me is 4' of water, shallow bay, big perch and gills. All I need to know. No safe ice by me right now in Green Bay. Soon
That’s exactly how we catch them in NE SD. Two hole system. Ripping Rap in 1 hole. Tungsten jig with some meat on it in the other. When there biting good they’ll hit both.
Great video!! love me some perch fishing. Almost as much as walleye Both make great meals. Got my hat in the mail unfortunately didn't bring none of that cold weather to Ohio with it. But hey got to look at the bright side I'll be out fishing tomorrow with no coat in December so not all bad keep em coming love what you are doing.
Even if they're not feeding on minnows, if you're allowed two lines where you're fishing try putting down a minnow in a second hole near your jigging hole. They might not bite that minnow, but it keeps the school interested and they stick around a little longer.
Hey man just a thought for the whole 'plastics' and perch. I've fished for and caught ALOT of in my lifetime. I'm from Saskatoon. the only 'plastics'/lure combo that has consistently successful for me without using bait has been a Northland 'forage minnow' jig head. Tipped with a gulp alive 1" minnow plastic (they come in the little jar). Perch love them. Other than that though go with bait.
Great vid as always Clayton. Love your Channel. You have such great enthusiasm and are so informative. Do you ever use a Livescope? I bought one last year and now can't fish without it. I also love your underwater camera footage- so much so I had to run out and get one(micro 5 revolution pro for now til I can justify the HD10i) Can't wait for your next vid. Tight lines my friend!

@Aryan Derek Thanks for your reply. I found the site thru google and im waiting for the hacking stuff now. Seems to take a while so I will reply here later with my results.
I learned how to fish as a kid catching perch so may be slightly biased. I think they are the most beautiful fish in Canada (sorry trout people). Colours of a tropical fish, they look like bars of gold coming out of the water.
In BC, we have a bait company called "Scotties Bait" that we buy it from. It is fairly delicate and hard to get to stay on the hook unless we wrap it with "Spider Thread", which is a very fine elastic thread, which does a good job. The krill that we buy comes in bottles about the same size as the Berkley Gulp maggots, another product that we use a lot of while ice fishing for kokanee.I have no idea about availability east of the Rockies.
Mind the jig ~ move the knot on the jig head so your presentation Is horizontal looked like you’d knit slipped and it was presenting at an UN natural angle
One of the most underrated fishing channels on UA-cam! Love how you take care of the fish you catch as well, keep making these awesome videos!
That is the plan! Thank you for the kind comments :)
First fish, "it's not big." I couldn't be any more jealous of these Canadians. That is a TANK where I'm from
Spoiled, I know :)
Its pretty wild man. I live in ontario and theres three lakes within 4 kms of my house that are FULL of TANK perch XD My pb is 14 inches

I can't believe you're throwing those back, a mess of fresh perch for dinner.
alaskanhunter I was on the road and no where to really keep the fish. I keep enough to have a bite to eat once and a while. :)
It’s called catch and release you should practice that, it’s people like you that ruin our lakes...

I have always heard so much about the swedish pimple :)

Just dug a 2.3 acre pond and added perch SMB and walleye. Super excited to ice fish it when they’re bigger!!

Hey Clayton, which ice transducer do you use on your Helix 7?
Xi 9 1521 The full Chirp
You talk about the perch eating shrimp. Wouldn't krill be the bait to use, ideally? We use krill for kokanee through the ice here in BC.
Maybe? I wouldn't be able to get a hold of any
